What are the present steps?
The team cannot say much about the sudden actions of the team leader. They were not worried until now because the first incident was enough to make them trust his actions. He seemed well versed and learned about the stones and many other things. There was no other reason for them to make themselves believe him. The first incident where he did not walked forward for grabbing the stone. In blunt opinion; every team member jump at the stone as a hungry human catching last piece of burger. Later they were normally acting. In their eyes the team leader has reason for everything.
