Chapter 6 - The repercussions of bad decisions

There are at least two things to ensure when collapsing a goblin den. One, make sure all the goblins are dead, and two, make sure you haven't left anything behind. The fact that a whole group of guards and their equipment were now in the hands of goblins was not as bad as one might think. When Jack and his hired help Herb saw a goblin walking around wearing armor... the only good thing they could think of was "At least we don't have to collapse another goblin den." Jack knew they could take out this greenie scout without too much trouble. Jack distracted the greenie while Herb sneaked around the back and stabbed the goblin in the throat. They followed the goblin's tracks back to a small crevasse. Just big enough for a brownie without armor. This was a good sign. The fact that the goblins had armor was bad. The fact they couldn't effectively use it was good. They waited near the opening and took down another greenie and a brownie. After all of this, they took the armor and left the crypt all the while looking out for other signs of goblins escaping. They didn't find any.

All in all, it was a fairly good crawl.

Jack and Herb sold off the chest plate back to the company that had employed the guards, and Herb kept a Knife from the Brownie. Jack made 1 silver and 30 copper. The crawler decided to eat at a tavern for 25 copper. He had a veggie stew with a couple of small chunks of meat.

It had been a while since Jack had eaten meat. He cried.

Jack went to buy a leather chest piece and while walking in the poorer parts of the market he saw a peddler on the street. The woman was dressed in strange fabrics and sold what amounted to a refugee's junk. It wasn't all that unusual to see someone far from home selling anything they had to afford food. Wars were a constant in a world of such limited resources. One item caught Jack's eye. A small pendant made of a green rock. He asked about it and the woman said it grants the protection of the nature spirits. The fact that it was worth more than the other junk was apparent. Jack could tell the woman held onto it long enough for it to be the only item she had left of any value. He asked why she was selling it. She responded, "Wasn't strong enough to save what mattered most..." The woman's head sank with the look of someone who had lost a child. Jack held her hand and placed 1 silver coin in it "Keep it" he said. As Jack began to walk away the woman grabbed him "No. you keep it..." Jack asked, "Are you sure". "Don't need it no more" The woman said with a bittersweet smile.

Jack knew the power that beliefs and traditions could have on objects, all crawlers did. He knew the pendant would be better than any armor he could afford. The crawler knew the old woman wouldn't last the night. Even if 1 silver was enough to fix the prolonged starvation and old age. No one sells the only thing they care about if they have any hope left.

Though it was no artifact of a lost age nor a hidden magic crafted by a master jewelsmith, this pendent would become more important to Jack's growth than he realized.
