Chapter 23 - Escorts

Kael walked towards their headquarters prepared, the sun was shining bright on its peak and it was noon. He arrived a little bit late compared to yesterday because he slept soundly. The people were bustling in the headquarters as Kael has seen it. Kael went to the bulletin board of missions and looked for a new quest. His eyes were fixed on the posted information written in this manner:

Rank F: Escort mission

Details: Escort the merchant of carrying goods towards the Barbarian Kingdom.

Duration: One week

Reward: Fifty silvers.

He picked the mission that was posted, then went to the mission receptionist while carrying the mission paper.

"Here's what I've picked," Kael said to her.

"Thank you, Sir, for picking a mission. You will be accompanied by five veterans so don't worry," she said to him.

While Kael finished picking mission and was going out. A male shouted to call their attention. Kael turned around and listened.

"Attention all adventurers! I'm the guild master and we have a big quest! The adventurers are needed by the kingdom! As you can see, some dungeons are recently appearing from the different places of the kingdom and the adventurers are the ones who are assigned to clear them. You can only close the dungeon by killing the boss monster inside. If they are left open, they will kill anything outside their dungeon. We have a new quest that will be given to you. It is called dungeon exploration, dungeon conquering, and dungeon excavation. Dungeon exploration will only be espionage and dungeon excavation is taking the loot from the monsters without killing the Boss. And last was the conquering that involves killing the boss and closing the gate. Every dungeon that is closed will be rewarded with a chest of gold by the king himself! That's all and thank you for listening," he finished the announcement.

Kael went outside after the announcement was broadcasted. Kael met with the other adventurers on the designated point of their meeting place.

He saw a male in his mid-twenties and carries a bow; a ranger to be exact. He has four other companions that have a job-class. A female Priest in her priestly uniform that was in her twenties, a Knight that has a full plated armor and he covers his face with a helm. There was also a male Mage in his thirties and has a staff that he carries. And last was the Paladin that has a hammer and a shield.

Kael introduced himself to them.

"Hi! I'm a combatant! I'm Kael Melvin. Nice to meet you," he said as he bowed down.

He introduced but they were silent.

"What? A combatant? And you are underaged? How old are you?" the male Ranger mocked him.

"I'm thirteen! I'm sorry if you can only have me. The mission says it is rank F so you get me because of the difficulty. Don't complain about what you get, okay?" Kael replied.

"What can you do? Swing your sword and all?" said the Knight as he imagined a sword and lousily swings it.

"Hey. Don't bully him, guys. He is once like you in the past! At least stronger than you in his age! What are you doing when you're thirteen? Swinging your wooden sword?" the male Mage interrupted.

"He has a point so don't underestimate him," The female Priest said.

"We're sorry. I'm Andre–a Mage," said Andre as he reached Kael's hands.

"I'm Fred–a Knight!" he said then shakes hands with Kael.

"Johansen–a Ranger," he said as he raised his hands.

"I'm Kelly and I am a Priest, nice to meet you!" she said to him.

"Estes, a Paladin!" he said briefly.

"Nice to meet you all," said Kael and bowed again.

They waited for minutes and then the carriage arrived. The driver together with the merchant went down from the carriage and they were greeted.

"How's your day?" the merchant greeted them.

"We have problems with one of our wheels that's why we arrived late. So, everyone's ready? We will go now. Go there at the back of the carriage and we're good to go!" he said to them.

They went to the back of the carriage and they will travel to the borders of the kingdom.

Kael fell asleep and woke up in-between the journey. They passed through the valleys and mountains in their travels when he woke up. He saw the road that was next to the mountain, there was a cliff beside it. From his seat, he saw the mountain they're traveling at was covered with thick snow on its top. The cold breeze of air went through his clothes and he felt the chill. After they encompassed the mountain of Flegen, they arrived at the village of Terizla. They were the ones that lived at the boundaries of Dwight.

"Hey, wake up!" said the girly voice.

Kael was surprised and almost slammed to the floor of the carriage. He woke up and then exited the carriage.

He saw many vineyards beside the village–a grape farm to be exact. They also have a winepress that supplies wine to the kingdom of Dwight and also to the Barbarian kingdom of Farmus. Kael walks to the muddy ground and he saw many children that were chasing with each other. Some adults have seen harvesting grapes and they have harvesting crates that they carried.

"We will restock our supplies," the Merchant said to them.

The merchant purchased food and they ate bread that has been given to them by the merchant. Kael ate the bread and drank water.

"I will buy food and wine from them. The three must escort me. Others must guard our carriage," the merchant said to them.

The Ranger, Paladin, and Priest accompanied the merchant while Kael was with the Knight and Mage in the guard duty.

The merchant walked towards the market of the village. Kael and the others were left behind. They talked while they were away.

"What happened? Why did you want to be an adventurer that badly? You have to attend first the academy if you want to have skills that come from your Job-class." The Knight interrogated him.

"It was a long story. Besides, enrollment will be next year. That's why while I wait. I wanted to gain experience while being an adventurer," Kael explained.

"Well, that explains it. But you're still a kid. You should be studying for the entrance exams for the enrollment," the Knight said to him.

"And by the way, How do you fight enemies? You don't have a skill do you?" the Mage asked curiously.

"I don't have a skill, only techniques!" Kael proudly said.

"What?" The Mage blurted out.

"Yep. And you will see it later if I fight," Kael said to them.

While they were talking, the other three and the merchant arrived while carrying their stocks. They brought it inside the carriage.

They went again inside the carriage to resume their travel. While they were inside, the kids who were playing waved goodbye to them.

"Bye! Goodbye!"

They waved until they were far from them.
