Chapter 3 - The beginning

For what seemed like hours the brothers held on to one another. Demetrius had long since stopped crying, his brother however was still going. It was only after Xavier stopped crying did they separate.

"I-I can't believe it brother. I-I'm... N-no w-were alive!" Xavier said happily, while stuttering through his words.

Now back to his emotionless state Demetrius said " Obviously."

Hearing his brother's bland reply Xavier smiled. This was definitely his brother, calm and near emotionless even when being brought back to life.

However a frown marred his face as a stray thought crossed his mind.

Looking at his brother with worry Xavier spoke" W-who d-do y-you think b-brought u-us back?"

Seemingly ignoring his brother's question, the older of the two turned his head to the side, staring into the white abyss. Barely a second later Demetrius's  gaze returned to his brother, his eyes a stormy grey with traces of black.

" I believe the culprit will show themselves soon enough." He said cooly

"H-how come?" Xavier asked curiously.

"Being in the void stripped of all sensations left me little to do. As I hate being unproductive I tried to "sense" "smell" and "hear" as a soul." Demetrius said shocking Xavier.

"D-did y-you succeed?" Xavier responded a bit miffed.

'Having sensations as a soul? That sounds ludicrous!' Xavier thought.

'I hadn't been able to do anything of the sort in the eons we floated aimlessly.'

Though…if possible his brother would find a way.

Demetrius gave a small nod in confirmation. " Initially I thought it a useless endeavor, trying to feel as a soul was simply a hobby to pass the time along with various other projects I worked on as a result of sheer boredom."

Waiting for his brother to possibly respond, then hearing none, the older of the brotherly duo continued.

"Until one day I managed an actual result. I had felt, for a moment, the cold and uncaring characteristic of my soul along with the warmth yours carried."

Looking into the whiteness once more Demetrius calmly said" Since then I've honed the skill for eons, slowly mastering the art with my limited knowledge on souls."

' Disappointingly that  training may have been in vain.' Demetrius thought  emotionless with hints of frustration.

"T-thats c-cool bro! B-but what d-does this h-have to do w-with the person w-who brought us h-here." Amazement was present in Xavier's tone, but also confusion towards the end of his talking.

Demetrius continued to stare at the whiteness, his eyes narrowing only slightly. His posture changed, now it showed he was attentive and battle ready.

Then with his usual cold tone Demetrius spoke"  I noticed two things upon our revival." He revealed, his eyes showing a  storm with black lightning brewing within them, all the while staring at a single area of the void.

Taking a break from staring into the abyssal white,  Demetrius glanced at his left hand closing and opening  his hand experimentally. " For one, the power behind my skills I've developed over the eons had increased significantly."  To show what he meant Demetrius demonstrated a small portion of what he dubbed " Soul casting". A power he created during his time in the abyss that was purely theoretical, until a few seconds ago.

Though Demetrius could sense things, as a soul he couldn't do much else without a body, or proper tutelage. So in the unlikely case of regaining his old body, possibly a new one, Demetrius had created Soul casting for defensive purposes, along with alleviating his boredom.

He wanted his first usage to be in a controlled environment so he could work out it's flaws, but the current situation demanded skipping that part.

Thankfully it seems it was going exactly as he wished.

Grey energy forced itself out of his chest before moving swiftly like a snake down the mixed man's arm and into his hand. Sparks of the grey energy produced themselves from his hand, disappearing after a few seconds.

Demetrius mentally nodded to himself, satisfied at the result.

Stopping his fluctuations of power to his  hand he took a glance at Xavier's completely dumbstruck face  before glaring at the void once more. " The second thing that came to my attention is the other being here with us. Who I can  assume is the resurre-. " Demetrius paused , looking into the abyss once more. Only this time it held results.

A monster unlike anything he had ever seen stood before him. Demetrius dared not move, cautious of the creature's motives. Time ticked by as he stared down the creature, in it's ever changing eyes. Silence befell the void.

Only to be broken by the pained screams of his brother.
