It must have been around seven hours already after my decision to come along with Jonathan, when everyone seemed to be resting. I also volunteered to the rest of the others to be the one lighting the station platform with the electrostatic power source earlier right after I last talked with him, even though they did not seem to be really care about it.
When I sensed that more of the others had fallen asleep, I stopped rubbing the aluminum foil against the PVC pipe, therefore turning off the two lamps that had been lighting the platform. When the lamps had completely dimmed out, I took out Ryan's flashlight and lighted my surroundings as I stood up and headed to the first train car where Captain Quentin earlier was.
Just when I was about to enter the train car, a familiar voice was heard from behind me, saying something to me before I turned around to the voice's direction. I soon realized it was none other than Captain Quentin, who realized what Jonathan and I was going to do.
"We will be waiting for you guys, son." he said, seemingly with a faint smile on his face.
"It does not look like there will be more attacks to this station any sooner so… do not worry about us." he finished his sentence.
I only nodded as a response, and immediately headed downstairs to get to Jonathan. When I arrived there, I saw him already packed up with his backpack right beside his left leg. He was currently reloading his rifle magazine with the .30-06 rounds. It also seemed like he did not carry much bullet inside his backpack, as it did not look like it was even half full.
Shortly after, he finished filling the rifle magazine and loaded it to his rifle before carrying his backpack on his back. He only nodded once towards me and did not say anything as he was heading downstairs to the street below. As I was following him, I recalled that I had not told Captain Quentin before about our plan on going to the hospital, and therefore I assumed that he had been told by Jonathan before.
When I had arrived on the street outside, I felt like a whole new atmosphere had surrounded me. As we were getting further from the station, a creeping and somewhat whirling cold stroke right to my skin. I could feel my spine was also tingling as I lighted my dark surroundings which seemed like a street that I had never seen before, even though it was the very same familiar one as before. When I thought about it, I assumed that I experienced the feeling because I had not ventured out again in the middle of the night since the first night of the invasion.
Even though the ruins of buildings looked like they were just being abandoned after they were destroyed during the day, it was completely different when I saw it in the middle of the night. If I was to describe what I felt, it would be like walking in the middle of a ghost town that was engulfed in a never ending dense fog full of grotesque unidentified living creatures.
That, and not to mention that almost in every couple of feet distance we took, a fallen dead body lying on the road emerged from the fog that engulfed us succeeded in adding the terror that had been holding on to me. Strangely enough for me, Jonathan seemed to be not budged at all by the horrifying sights as he just passed through the dead bodies without even glancing a bit to them.
Since I definitely needed something to brush my mind a bit from the horrors right in front of my eyes, I decided to initiate a conversation with Jonathan. Fortunately for me, he seemed to be sensitive to what I had in my mind, as he responded to my sentences very quickly and with rather longer words.
"Jon…" I called to him.
"Yeah?" He responded.
"Where is this hospital again?" I asked.
"Just northeast from the station. It is four blocks away from the main road by the lake shore." He responded.
As he had answered my question, I was struggling to search for more words to say. Just then, he asked me about the time when I witnessed the dead bodies raining. It turned out that he had something to share to me as well.
"These dead bodies…" he said, before asking me, "where were you when they were raining down?"
That question was to the least of my expectation. However, I believed that it was better than just venturing the dark and terrifying road without any words. Therefore, I did not complain about his question.
"I was with Della in front of a building when we were going back to the station, and suddenly it was…" I said, before stopping for a while to answer him with different words.
"It was about five minutes away from the second gun store, Della and I started to hear something from above without the quake that usually followed. Shortly after, the raining happened." I said, correcting my previous words.
Jonathan responded by nodding. I felt a bit of relieve as I believed I had started to be more sensitive about how to answer some specific questions. It was also due to his question, that I decided no matter what happened I had to constantly check the time once in a while, especially since it was only me who wore a watch among all of us seven survivors.
"Then it was the same time for all of us when it happened…" he responded.
I almost forgot that aside from Della and me, the other five of them also experienced and witnessed the dead bodies rain when Jonathan brought the horror up. When I thought about it again, Ryan, Virgil, and Kyle must have also experienced the horrifying sights. I immediately realized that it was very remarkable of them that they had not been breaking down after what they had seen.
"Can you suggest any supposition regarding it?" I asked him.
"Nothing comes to my mind so far…" he said, before continuing, "Except for… the possible things that might have caused it…" he answered me.
Jonathan then mentioned that the growling sound from above the foggy sky was of the similar, if not the same one to the Narwhal aircraft flying sound, and I agreed with him completely. Therefore, he could only suggest two possibilities – that there were numbers of narwhal aircrafts hovering high throwing the dead bodies down, or that there was another larger aircraft yet to be seen by us that contained them disposing them away by throwing it out down below.
Either way, he stated that any of them would only mean that greater threats were upon us. In the case of large numbers of narwhal aircraft would mean that they could storm us with bigger sized aircrafts the next time we were attacked, while in the case of the larger aircraft would possibly mean that some parts of the town could be disintegrated almost instantly whenever the aliens decided to. Just thinking about the possibilities could already send cold sweat running down my back.
He also made me recall that back at the church, the middle aged man told us that one of the dead survivors with a crowbar was dragged away by two of the aliens deep into the fog. Since the survivors at the church would not know where the aliens would brought the dead body to, or what they would do to him, the middle aged me had left us completely in the dark on what we were supposed to do about it.
With that in mind, I felt like Jonathan had brought up the possibility that the dead body was kidnapped and brought to the aircraft by those aliens and did autopsy on the dead body, particularly the brain. It could also mean that the aliens might be planning on taking away more not disintegrated dead bodies. Thinking about it made me felt a mixture of disgusted, terrified, and confused as I had no idea at all what was the aliens' purpose on extracting the brains out.
Strangely enough, even though I did not sense that Jonathan had known it beforehand, he did not show any surprise on his face at all when I told him that the dead bodies had their brains absent with a large hole behind their skulls – a couple of slight nod was all of his response. And then, the two of us fell silent again as we continued walking on the dark street. On the bright side however, I did not feel as terrified as I was on the beginning of our journey.
"Guess we have arrived…" he said, while he slowed down his pace, a little time after the silence fell.
At first I still could not see the signs of the hospital yet, until we took several more steps and the flashlight began to pick the sign of the hospital parking lot entrance.
"Thank God it was not as long as I thought it would be…" I responded.
We entered the hospital parking lot, which was filled with several ambulance and few other abandoned vehicles, before we finally reached the door to the main lobby of the hospital. The door was left opened, which was a good thing for us since we did not have to use any force to enter it. When we finally stepped our feet inside, Jonathan readied his rifle and began to take aim.
"Do not mind me on lighting my surroundings. You will need it far more than me…" he said, as he started to crouch and walk ahead.
I proceeded to do the same with the flashlight held on my left hand, after checking my watch to know what time it was. I realized that it was already 00.25 a.m., and our attempts on obtaining more medical supplies had just begun…
