Chapter 23 - Seal the Deal, Hongmen Feast

An Mu pulled the sheets over her head. 'What should I do, what should I do!'

Her phone vibrated at that moment—it was a text message.

An Mu picked up the phone. It was Feng Ziqian, and the message had a demanding tone. [Dinner at home tonight.]

After that, it was followed by another text message. [If you refuse to come home, then don't come back forever!]

Feng Zhiqian's tone was unpleasant, revealing his impatience.

An Mu pursed her lips, but when she thought of Professor Wu's threat, and seeing that it was the first time the Feng family properly invited her over to their home after all these years, she decided to go.

She started getting ready at four o'clock in the afternoon.

She used a strange foundation that turned her fair skin into a waxy yellow. The double eyelid tape on her usually lifted eyes made her look drained, and she loosened her bangs—so much so that it covered half of her eyes. The light in her eyes dimmed.

Her facial features still looked prominent but overall, An Mu looked timid, ugly, and unconfident.

She then tied up the chest binder strap and put on a T-shirt and a pair of denim jeans.

She double-checked for any oversight, then put on her backpack and headed out for the bus.

Two hours later, she was in front of the Feng family's house gate, just on time.

The housekeeper, Mrs. Lin, opened the gate. An Mu saw Feng Siyue holding the Feng family's sole breadwinner, Feng Yingxiong's, arm at the living room's large sofa.

The Feng family's hostess, Su Meihui, compassionately pulled the impatient Feng Ziqian close to her, looking as if she had something to say to him.

Once An Mu stood by the door, the cheerful atmosphere instantly became freezing cold.

No one from the Feng family was willing to step forward to speak to her.

This was a cold war.

Ever since she first set foot in the family at ten years of age, she had always been doubtful whether she had done something wrong that annoyed the people around her.

She was in despair after her parents passed away, and when she needed affectionate care the most, these people…

An Mu clenched her fists, lowered her head, and entered the Feng house.

They had not even greeted each other, and Su Meihui had already started looking for trouble.

"An Mu, how can you be so late for dinner when you're invited. How dare you allow all of us to wait for you!"

After the conversation ended, she looked over at the dining area. Bai Yujie was there acting like the owner, commanding the housekeeper to serve the fish.

The dishes were steaming hot. Obviously, they had just been cooked, so what did she mean by they were waiting for her?

Su Meihui just wanted to pick on something. She would feel uncomfortable when there were no opportunities to insult her.

Yet, An Mu was used to it. She put the bag in her hand down calmly.

Then, she went in front of the four members of the Feng family and greeted them. "Uncle, Auntie."

Feng Yingxiong raised his eyebrows when he heard her timid voice.

Feng Ziqian furrowed his brows too. The disgust in his expression was very noticeable.

Feng Siyue pursed her lips, and said, "So unlucky! An Mu, can't you dress more appropriately. Are you using your shabby looks to imply that the Feng family is mistreating you?"

'Dress appropriately?'

An Mu lowered her eyes to hide her disdain.

The Feng family really expected her to dress flamboyantly just from the one thousand Yuan they gave her for monthly living expenses?

Nevertheless, these harmless insults did not affect An Mu one bit.

Before Su Huimei could add anything, Feng Yingxiong started talking. "Okay, let's quickly seal the deal. Let's start our dinner."

'Seal the deal?'

An Mu's pupils contracted.

It seemed that this dinner was indeed a Hongmen Feast!

  1. The name came from a historical event that happened at Hong Gate between two leaders having a feast. In modern day, it refers to a trap whereby an event appears to be joyous but is, in fact, treacherous.
