Chapter 33 - Soul-eating Eagles

Shiba ate a recovery pill while flying.

Although his speed with Wind Wings increased after waking up from his slumber, he couldn't reach the town before being exhausted, so he needed to rely on the recovery pills he obtained.

He didn't have a second to lose, given that the Soul-eating Eagles could attack that town at any moment.

Shiba already lost some time by punching that guy, but that was half due to the anger after the guy insulted the honest people in the town and half to repay the kindness of the girl that had helped him before. He considered it unavoidable.

Anyway, after that he didn't want to lose more time, so he planned to fly all the way.

At that moment, he was faster flying than running, so that was the obvious choice.

He was already regretting not starting to fly inside the town, but he hadn't thought of it until later.

In fact, he didn't know that his flying speed was that good until he used Wind Wings to leave the town. The gates were closed, so he needed to fly, or he couldn't leave.

After flying for a while, he heard some voices screaming.

"I am late!"

At the moment he heard the voices, he also saw the town, and there were over thirty beasts that looked like eagles there.

There were screams of pain while they were being attacked by the Soul-eating Eagles. The people of the town were trying to defend themselves, but although thanks to Shiba they managed to start training properly, only the man who trained with Shiba managed to reach Level 3 Mortal, and it hadn't been long ago.

The rest were all Level 2 Mortals, and they didn't even have their stats maxed, so they weren't too much stronger than before.

They didn't have any useful skills either because they had only learned Earth Step.

At that moment, the only level 3 Mortal had already lost his right arm, but he was still managing to defend using his left one after picking the sword again.

However, the situation was one of despair for them. The Soul-eating Eagles were playing with them while slowly eating their bodies and souls. There was no way someone in their town would survive that battle.

"It seems that everything is over."

He had read once about those beasts when he traveled, so he knew perfectly that they were too strong.

However, he didn't want to give up, so he had been battling with all his strength.

At that moment of hesitation, a Soul-eating Eagle devoured his remaining arm, and he fell to the floor powerless.

He was already struggling due to the blood loss previously, but at that moment, he was already about to die.

"In the end, they are just playing with us..."

Those Soul-eating Eagles weren't happy just eating their prey. They liked to play with them killing them slowly.

That wasn't just for fun but a way to make their souls easier to devour. The despair they felt would make that there wasn't any resistance when devouring the souls.

When the Soul-eating Eagle finished with the man's left arm, it attacked again. That time ready to claim the man's soul.

He closed his eyes, waiting for the unavoidable end.

However, he heard a strange sound that made him open them again, and what he saw was unbelievable.

The Soul-eating Eagle had fallen to the ground, and its head was pierced. It was easy to see that it was dead.

That Soul-eating Eagle wasn't the only one, another five of them met the same end instants after the first one fell.

"What is happening? A miracle?"

The man couldn't believe that six of those fearsome beasts died so quickly.

At that moment, the remaining eagles changed their focus to the person who killed the others, and the man used all his strength to direct his gaze in the same direction.

The man couldn't believe what he was seeing.

In the sky, there was a thirteen-year-old boy with a pair of translucent green wings on his back. He had a strange bow in one hand and an arrow covered by a greenish light on the other.

There was no doubt that he had been the one who killed the six Soul-eating Eagles, but the problem was that he met that boy the previous month and he wasn't that strong. Shiba left a profound impression on everyone in the town, so it wasn't difficult for them recognizing him.

He couldn't believe that in that short time, Shiba had improved that much.

At the moment that Shiba had seen the town being attacked, he had used Earth Bow on a bow before using Wind Arrow into an arrow. With physical and elemental combined, the strength was superior, and Shiba didn't dare to fail to kill them, so he used six arrows as fast as possible to kill those six Soul-eating Eagles.

The six arrows hit the heads of the Soul-eating eagles, so it was an instantaneous death, but he had attracted their attention before he could shoot the seventh arrow.

The only reason he killed six of them that easily was that they weren't paying attention to him.

Without wasting more time, Shiba continued firing arrows at the Soul-eating Eagles, but they managed to avoid all of them without too many difficulties.

All the Soul-eating eagles ignored the remaining people in the town and went to attack Shiba.

"This is bad!"

He tried to retreat, but he had already been encircled. Those Soul-eating Eagles were far more intelligent than other beasts he had met.

At that moment, another Soul-eating Eagle was killed, but that hadn't been killed by Shiba.

"Endure there!"

Eini saw the situation and knew that Shiba was in danger. Although it wasn't as if she needed to worry for him, both of them had a Fake Origin Path and had helped each other before, so she wasn't willing to see him die in front of her.

However, although she managed to kill a second Soul-eating Eagle quickly after the first one, the rest attacked Shiba and ate him alive.

They considered Shiba a threat, so even if they couldn't digest his soul properly, they needed to kill him quickly.

Eini's face changed. She didn't know what background Shiba had, but if the person behind him was like her sister, she believed that the whole planet was in danger.

When she was worried about that, Lina was hidden nearby with a smile on her face.

"It seems that I have underestimated Shiba's master. What an ingenious defense method."

After she finished speaking, the Soul-eating Eagles returned to their previous positions automatically, and Shiba was still unharmed in the middle of the encirclement.

Immediately after reappearing, he changed his bow and arrows for swords and charged towards a Soul-eating Eagle, killing it. After that, he managed to successfully flee from the encirclement.

Eini didn't know what was happening, but she didn't waste the chance of killing a few Soul-eating Eagles while they were distracted.

As long as the Soul-eating Eagles were distracted, they weren't too difficult to kill with their strength. The problem was that it wasn't that easy to catch them unguarded.

Of course, that was only because those Soul-eating Eagles were still very young, so they were only Level 9 Beasts. If they were stronger, it wouldn't be easy to kill them even distracted, given the strength that Shiba and Eini had at the moment.

In fact, if it weren't for the superior quality of the weapons and superior comprehension of elements, Shiba wouldn't be able to kill them in one shot with the arrows, nor when using two swords with the corresponding skills.

Going back to when Shiba was encircled by the beasts, he really felt that he would die, but then he had heard a notification of the system.

[Lethal danger detected, activating the System's Hidden Skill. Everything will be nullified.]

Soon after that, Shiba really felt that he had been eaten alive, but he was perfectly fine afterward, so he used the chance to counterattack while the Soul-eating Eagles were still disoriented.

Shiba didn't understand well what happened, but since it was related to the Legacy System, he believed that it was something his master did, so no matter what was, he could believe it.

Moreover, he had endured so much suffering in the past, that he was able to maintain his rationality despite having experienced such a nightmare moments ago.

"Can I learn that System Hidden Skill?"

Shiba had muttered those words while escaping from the encirclement and killing the Soul-eating Eagle in the process.

[No. This skill is called Absolute Protection, and it was developed by Master Liye. It uses the Time Law. The disciple doesn't have the talent to use this skill at the Mortal Rank. The system also needs time to recharge the energy to use it, so the disciple mustn't rely on it.]

Shiba sighed after noticing that there was no way he could learn such an overpowered skill. It was already a blessing that it wasn't something that would only happen once.

"Are you alright?"

Eini asked after Shiba escaped from the encirclement.

"I am fine, but I won't be able to escape using the same method."

Shiba didn't dare to reveal the existence of the Legacy System, but since that girl seemed to be worrying about him, he didn't want to have misunderstandings.

If he could use that skill without limits, he wouldn't fear any enemy, but the truth was that he couldn't use it, and he didn't even know when the system would be able to use it again.

Of course, the system knew, but it wouldn't reveal that information to avoid that Shiba wanted to trigger it by putting himself in danger.

"Trump cards like that can't be used frequently. I understand. There are still several remaining, let's split and try to kill as many as possible. We need to reduce them so that they can't encircle us."

Eini felt that it was normal for Shiba to have some trump card to save his own life since he had a Fake Origin Path like her.

Thus, although she was surprised, she didn't feel that what Shiba had done was something impossible.
