Chapter 14 - Aftermath

The blow I expected never came. Instead I was greeted the spray of a warm liquid. My face was covered in the sticky liquid, it had also soaked my black dress.

When I opened my eyes, I saw Laurel standing above me, her brothers' dagger in her hands panting heavily. Rage filled her eyes as she looked down on me. Seconds seemed like hours as the enraged Laurel stood above me.

Finally, she dropped the knife, and her body sagged to the floor. At that moment the system sent me a notification. My eyes went wide as I looked at all the notifications I had received. The most recent was.

I smiled as I leaned up against the wall. With the pistol in my hands I closed my eyes. I do not know how much time passed, but when I opened my eyes again, I noticed that Laurel was gone. She left behind a letter.

Yuri:

Thank you for your help in escaping this place. Without you my fate would have been much worse. The method that you need to use to cultivate the meditation technique presented to you in the Grimoire is actually rather simple. You need to fuse it with a spell.

The spell you choose is something that will follow you for the rest of your life. This is something you need to think long and hard about. The best choice would be a spell that is evolvable. Something that will grow with you, and become unique to you. Look in the system store for something that will work.

Lastly keep this letter. If you ever find yourself in Slagstone City look me up. You can usually find me at the adventurers' guild there. This letter will count as your letter of introduction. I do suggest waiting until you've evolved into a more... appealing race however.

-Laurel.

I sighed as I read the note. She truly did follow her words to the letter. For that I am grateful. I did not feel like taking care of a human, I was not even sure I could take care of myself.

After that I began to read through the many notifications I had received. Two of them stood out before all others.

[Serial Killer]

Killing the same species in succession gives you a damage bonus to the next kill of that species. +5% damage per kill. Stacks infinitely.

[Sole Survivor]

You have managed to survive a massacre that took the lives of your entire clan. Your tenacity is blessed by the gods and you receive +1 vitality and +1 constitution each level. (retroactive)

I had also gained an excessive amount of experience, pushing me to the middle of level 9. With this I decided to look at my status.

I was shocked as I looked over my stats. I had grown exponentially in the last 7 days. I could not help but wonder why my talents seemed to make me seem like some kind of super villain? All I had done was escape from a horrible situation... Well I guess I did take it a little far, I did not need to slaughter them all just to escape.

After a moment of pause I just shrugged. what was done was done, I could not change it now. Perhaps This is just the way fate wanted it to be. What mattered now is what I would do next. With the goblin problem gone I was not in a hurry to leave this place, as it did provide me with shelter.

But this left me with the process of clearing out the bodies. I was not like the goblins; I would not simply eat the remains of the dead. There were literally Hundreds of bodies, and if I left them here to rot, they would not only get me sick, but likely attract monsters. The only choice I had was to do a mass burning. It was going to be hard, but what choice did I have.

I sighed and rolled up my theoretical sleeves. It was time to get to work.
