Chapter 88 - Chapter 87: Flickers of Warmth

The journey through the dense forest continued, each step echoing with the soft crunch of leaves underfoot. The group had become a well-oiled machine, moving with a fluid rhythm honed by countless battles and challenges. But tonight, there was an undercurrent of tension—a tension that had nothing to do with the dangers surrounding them.

As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the forest floor, the group set up camp in a small clearing. Lusi, as always, took a spot a little further away from the rest, her eyes lost in thought. She hadn't been the same since the unsettling visions she experienced by the lake, and the others knew better than to disturb her.

Wang Jie, however, couldn't help but feel drawn to her. Over the weeks they'd spent together, he had watched her closely, understanding the burdens she carried, and the walls she built around herself. Tonight, though, something felt different—an invisible weight hung in the air between them, and he could no longer stay silent.

As the fire crackled softly, he approached her quietly, his footsteps light on the ground. Without saying a word, he sat beside her, the closeness of his presence both comforting and charged. For a moment, neither of them spoke, the silence between them thick with unspoken emotions.

Lusi finally broke the silence, her voice soft and distant. "There's something about this place… something unsettling."

Wang Jie glanced at her, his brow furrowing with concern. "You've been carrying too much on your own, Lusi. Let me help."

His words were simple, but they struck something deep within her. She had spent so long being strong, being the one everyone depended on, that the idea of letting someone in felt foreign—dangerous even. But there was something about Wang Jie that made her want to let her guard down, if only for a moment.

She turned to face him, her eyes meeting his in the fading light. There was a vulnerability in her gaze that Wang Jie had never seen before. His heart raced as he reached out, his hand brushing against hers. The contact was electric, sending a jolt through both of them.

"I'm not used to letting people in," Lusi admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.

Wang Jie's hand lingered on hers, his touch gentle but firm. "You don't have to do this alone."

The words hung in the air between them, and for the first time in a long time, Lusi felt the weight on her shoulders ease just a little. She hadn't realized how much she needed to hear that—how much she needed someone to stand by her, not as a rival or an enemy, but as a partner.

The fire crackled, casting a warm glow on their faces. The tension between them shifted, no longer the heavy burden of unspoken words, but something warmer—something neither of them fully understood yet. Wang Jie's eyes softened as he leaned in, his hand slowly moving to cup her cheek.

Lusi's breath hitched, her heart pounding in her chest as their faces inched closer. She had faced countless dangers, stared death in the face more times than she could count, but this—this felt more terrifying than anything she had ever known.

And yet, she didn't pull away.

Their lips met in a soft, tentative kiss, a spark igniting between them that neither could deny any longer. It wasn't a kiss of passion or lust, but something deeper—a promise, an unspoken understanding that whatever came next, they would face it together.

When they finally pulled apart, the world seemed to shift around them. Lusi's cheeks flushed as she looked away, suddenly embarrassed by the intensity of the moment. But Wang Jie, ever calm and collected, simply smiled, his hand still resting gently on her cheek.

"You're not alone, Lusi. You never have to be alone again."

And for the first time in a long time, she believed him.
