Chapter 72 - Chapter 71: Winds of Change

As the group ventured deeper into the mystical forest, the air seemed heavier, filled with an eerie stillness that unsettled even the bravest among them. Lusi and Wushi led the way, their instincts sharp as they navigated the twisting paths of towering trees and winding vines. With every step, it became clear that this was no ordinary forest—it was alive, pulsating with a strange energy that both intrigued and alarmed them.

Lusi's senses tingled. She could feel the land itself shifting beneath her feet, responding to some unseen force. "There's something ahead," she whispered, her eyes narrowing as she surveyed the dense foliage. Her connection to the earth, heightened through her mastery of both medicine and poison, allowed her to pick up on subtle changes in the environment. It was as if the forest was warning them.

Wushi remained calm, his expression unreadable. "Be ready for anything," he said, his voice steady but low. His sharp gaze scanned the area, hand hovering over the hilt of his sword. The demi-god's presence was a silent but powerful reminder to the group that no matter what awaited them, Wushi would protect them at all costs.

The forest thickened, and the path became more treacherous. The group's pace slowed as roots twisted and curled along the ground like serpents waiting to ensnare their prey. The eerie silence was suddenly broken by a faint rustling ahead. Lusi stiffened, her hand instinctively going to the pouch of herbs she kept at her side, ready to use them if necessary.

Without warning, a shadowy figure darted across their path, barely visible in the dim light filtering through the thick canopy. It moved with unnatural speed, disappearing before anyone could react.

"What was that?" one of the warriors behind them muttered, gripping his spear tighter.

"Stay focused," Wushi ordered. "It's testing us."

As if responding to his words, more shadows began to move around them, quick and silent, circling like predators sizing up their prey. The tension in the group rose as the shadows closed in.

Wushi stepped forward, his presence commanding. "Enough games."

In a swift motion, he unleashed a burst of energy from his hand, sending a wave of divine force into the trees. The shadows scattered, revealing the true nature of their attackers—phantom-like creatures, barely corporeal, created from the dark magic that infested the forest.

"They're not fully formed," Lusi observed, her eyes narrowing. "Someone is controlling them."

Her mind raced. The forest was more than just a physical barrier—it was a test, an extension of the darkness spreading through the land. She could feel it now, an insidious presence lurking just beyond their reach, manipulating the creatures and the forest itself.

"We need to find the source," Wushi said, already moving ahead. His tone was decisive, leaving no room for hesitation.

Lusi followed closely, her thoughts swirling. Whoever was behind this was powerful, and the forest was only the beginning. But as she glanced at Wushi, she felt a strange sense of calm. No matter how strong the enemy, as long as they stood together, they could face anything.

The path led them to a clearing, where the air felt different—denser, almost suffocating. In the center of the clearing stood a massive stone altar, covered in ancient runes that glowed with a faint purple light. The energy radiating from it was dark, corrupt, and unmistakably tied to the shadowy figures they had encountered.

"This is it," Wushi said, his voice low.

Lusi stepped forward, feeling the pulse of the dark magic coursing through the air. "Whoever's controlling the forest… it's all tied to this altar."

Just as she spoke, the ground beneath them began to tremble. The runes on the altar flared brighter, and from the shadows emerged a figure, cloaked in darkness. Their presence was oppressive, a force that sent chills down Lusi's spine.

"Foolish mortals," the figure hissed. "You think you can stand against the power of the shadows?"

Lusi's heart raced, but she stood her ground. "We've faced worse."

Wushi drew his sword, the divine blade shimmering with power. "You won't stop us."

The figure laughed, a cold, hollow sound. "We shall see."
