Chapter 31 - Hunted

Alex

Fear was an old friend of Alex's, it stayed with her on all walks of her life, never leaving her side. It was with her when her father died, when her mother started drinking, and continued to stay with her as she scavenged for food to keep her siblings alive. The thing about fear though, it could always be channeled into something else, like anger. At this present time, in her current predicament, Alex decided to be the embodiment of anger. Scared shitless, sure, but another loophole to that was to blame this whole situation on Ace Ryker. The man had all but entrapped her, pretending to be someone he was not, so that she would say something stupid and he could take advantage of it. The man had exploited her weakness and then used it to bind her to him for as long as it amused him to do so. The man pure unadulterated evil, contradicting, probably but that was how she felt. Alexis Darling was a walking contradiction. One minute she hates the man and the next she wants him to touch her so bad it hurts. She was utterly losing her mind and now she was out in the woods, wearing nothing but Ace's shirt, running back to a home that no longer felt like home.

Finding a creek, Alex stooped next to its muddy bank, and lifted the cool sludge to her face. It was a putrid odor, smelling of grass and rotten fish, not such a great combination. It would work perfectly for hiding her scent, she proceeded to smear it over her face, neck, and continued the process all over her body. The goal was to cover as much exposed skin as she could, the last thing she wanted was for Ace to be able to sniff her out before she even got a foot out of Alpha lands. Staring at her reflection in the water, the moon her only source of light, Alex was satisfied with her results. Taking a deep breath, she plunged onward towards the Beta village she grew up in. Ace would no doubt be pissed at her leaving like that but all she could think about was how pissed she was feeling at him. When she left it had been with intentions of this being for him, so that he would no longer be endangered, because of her.

The longer she walked in the dark forest of the Alpha's, the more enraged she got at having been put in this position. There should have been no deals made, no exchanges of blood, nothing. Ace should have just stepped up right then and there and offered to help her village with the compensation of her as his whore. A bitch primed solely for his exclusive attention, till she no longer kept his attention, and then what would this all been for? What the purpose of having a passing fancy out there that everyone assumes is a weakness, that could get you killed? Ace was a selfish prick, all he thought about was what he wanted and not what she wanted or the fact that not only did he endanger his life but also hers. Lord forbid that they find out who she is and try to go after her own family. Entitled, pompous, and straight up a bastard by any standard. Fuck, she was irritated, her skin was so uncomfortable. No matter how much she scratched it, the itch remained. Throwing herself into the icy river crossed her mind, if she had not already covered herself in muck, she might have done it.

The wind caressed her face and her wolf purred against her skin, sheltering her with an inner warmth. Alex hugged her arms around her body. If she ever saw the smug face again, she would take her claws, and rake his beautiful eyes out. Stewing in her own thoughts of the hundreds of ways that she would torture Ace, a howl on the air had her collapsing to the ground. Alex sniffed the air, there was the distinct scent of wet dog in the air, whatever Alpha that was out there, stunk to high heaven. In no way, shape, or form did the smell of him excite her the way Ace's scent did. What was she going to do, that howl was a warning, was it for her though? Had the Alpha wolf smelt her and how? Alex had made sure to cover her scent, but it was not as if she could smell herself anyway. Was her aroma that potent that it was overpowering the grime from the riverbank? The thought was not a comforting one, Alex had heard of what Alpha's in their wolf form were capable of doing.

Alex was alone, barely dressed, and unmated. Technically she was still in Alpha territory, so she would be free game to any man that was brave enough to try and claim her. Shit, of course she would be in this situation right now, escape one enemy and fall right into the hands of another. A rustle from a nearby tree drew her attention, her breathing was hard even to her own ears, swallowing the lump in her throat, Alex seen the yellow eyes of the predator. An involuntary scream erupted from her throat as she pushed herself up on the ground and took off in a run. Rationally she knew that her speed on foot was no match for a man in wolf form, but that did not stop her from kicking up dirt. Glancing behind her the Alpha had disappeared, he was playing with her, no doubt trying to lure her into a false state of security before he jumped her. Unwilling tears built behind her eyes, but she held them from falling, she was not going to go down without a fight, she would be damned if this beast were going to touch her with his filthy putrid body. Out of the tree above her, Alex watched as the Alpha wolf pounced.
