Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The First Patient

After wearing full protective gear, Sandra and Dr.Leon made their way to ward 6, on the third floor, where the first patient was currently placed.

'Alison DeRaley,35. Reported coughing up blood, fever and consistent headache. No prior illnesses or disorders.'

Sandra frowned whilst reading the report. How could they be so sure that this was a virus, and not something else?

As if sensing her doubt, Dr.Leon reassured her.

"Just wait."

After walking a few more steps, a foul stench could be smelled. It was almost indescribable, like rotting flesh and feces.

As they walked closer to the lone cubicle at the end of the ward, the smell got worse, until the point where any other staff were not present at this end of the ward, for fear of suffocation.

Reaching the curtains that surrounded the cubicle, Dr.Leon reached out a gloved hand and opened them. The sight beheld, Sandra would never forget.

Her patient could no longer be described as a woman. Her pale skin, grey and papery, was almost translucent, to the point where her veins, now black and rotting, could clearly be seen. Even her pores seems to have been affected, as they released black pus that carried that foul stench.

Her face had sunk in, eyes no more than shrivelled raisins, milky-white and still.

Her nose- well there was no more nose. It had completely disappeared;the only remnants of one being there was the two slits for nostrils that could rival Voldemort's.

It was the mouth that was the scary part. Her jaw had protruded, and her mouth had elongated. It almost stretched down to her chest. This was no woman- it was a monster.

The rest of it's body seemed to have suffered the same fate as its face. What used to e hands were now webbed claws.

It's muscles were constantly flexing, but the internal organs seemed to have collapsed inside, so when the muscles contracted, it produced a mushy sound, like slushy sloshing in a cup.

This-thing- it was beyond anything Sandra had seen. And it was all caused by a virus? Then the rate it had to be working inside the body to reduce it to that state that fast...

If this virus went global, humanity might not exist the next few years, if a decade!

If it only took mere hours to decompose one body, the impact of it globally would be too astronomical to fathom.

Both doctors were rendered speechless, and could only gape at the alien lying in the bed in shock.

Then it started to move.
