Dayie was always in the black market where her mother's main work had taken place. The smell, the ambiance, and the feel were akin to her gypsy of a mother who foretold fraudulent fortune. Fraudulent—she knew that her mother only said fortunes that suited the people who came to her—and she made a profit out of it.
"This is all for survival, Dayie." Her mother often told her that when Dayie stared at her with questioning eyes. When Dayie got a little older, she realized she shouldn't ask too much.
They lived on the slums, but they were able to eat properly despite the circumstances they had in the past. Before Dayie was born, an epidemic broke into the slums. The countermeasures the government took was a harsh one.
