Chapter 9 - Can I be Green

Finally we left the office of the second doctor of the day. Ed went to go pay the neighbor lady, for watching Olive, before coming in. When I got home, all I wanted to do was hang out with my Robert and Olive. I had a big brother, a guardian, and a technical little sister. I had never had so many loved ones. Even if not all of them thought of me as family. I got home and Olive ran to me with icing and a pout on her face. I crouched down to talk to her. "You said you would make cupcakes with me. Then you and daddy left, without a word." she said. I licked my thumb and rubbed the icing off of her face. "You still got to make cupcakes with Robert though." I said. "That's different, I don't like Robert, and he burnt some of the cupcakes." I cocked my head sideways "So are you saying you like me then?" I asked sarcastically. Olive puffed up her cheeks. "Well you are my sister." she said. I was shocked at this comment. How did she find that out. I was only a conditional sister, but how did she find that out, I just said I was her nanny. Had Ed told her? I didn't think he would have ever said that, especially without asking me first. "Hey little sisters! Together again!" Robert came into view with oven mitts and an apron on which was covered in icing and sprinkles. That explains it. HE told her. I could already see that his tactic of controlling her was convincing her that he was her big brother. That idiot! Ed was going to be irate. Yes he called me his daughter while filling out forms, but this was a whole new level of overstepping personal boundaries. I shot to my feet and charged towards Robert with intent to kill. "Oh poop! Oh poop! Oh poop! I am so sorry, I don't know what I did, but I am sorry, don't kill me." Robert knew my angry face. "Beat him up like the bad guys! He burnt my cupcakes!" Olive yelled behind me. I continued towards Robert. "Hey if this is about the cupcakes I can bake new ones, I promise." Robert said, putting his hands up. I grabbed his ear and pinched as hard as I could and dragged him into the next room. I closed the door behind us so Olive wouldn't hear our conversation. "Why on God's green earth did you think it was okay to tell her that we are sisters? Do you know how mad Ed will be when he finds out about this. He just let us move here and you are already trying to get us kicked out." I whispered to him, trying my hardest not to raise my voice. He started to try and explain himself, "Well I started making cupcakes with her, and she was happy about the cupcakes, but not about me. I tried my best. I smiled I gave her compliments all that stuff, but all she would talk about was you. So when I burnt the first batch of cupcakes, she went from just thinking I was irritating to full on hating me. There was nothing I could do to change her mind. I thought it would be better when the second batch was successful I thought maybe her opinion of me was going to go back to simply thinking I was irritating and not that I was an idiot. So when I started icing the cupcakes I thought it would be good for her to do the sprinkles, so I handed the trey of frosted cupcakes and sprinkles to her." He then gestured toward his filthy apron. "That's when she decided that it was better for me to wear the cupcakes, than to eat them." I was still holding in my rage; I closed my eyes and pinched the skin between my eyebrows. "and... how did that make us sisters?" I said calmly through gritted teeth. "Well at that point I knew I couldn't talk my way around a tantrum with just flattery, so I had to explain to her that since I was your big brother I was just as cool as you." I scoffed "Impossible, but continue." Robert rolled his eyes. "So then she responded with 'So what it's not like you are my brother!'" he tried his best to mimic her little voice. I stopped him there I had one hand signaling for him to stop, and the other hand was planted on my face in frustration. "So" I began to speak, "You explained why you were her brother too, by proxy?" He stood up straight. "See makes perfect sense. You said yourself that kids like you better when they thought I was your brother, so why can't it work the other way around?" he explained. I stood up on my toes and looked him dead in the eyes. "Why are you looking at me like that?" he asked. "I am trying to see if you are actually just wearing blue contacts." I said. I took a deep breath in and out. "I am going to have to lecture her about how she treated you, and I am going to have to find a way around this sister business." He looked at me and smiled, "Just tell her to keep it a secret." Robert suggested. I flicked him on the forehead. "Ow." he said and rubbed his forehead. "Have you ever heard of a five year old keeping a secret?" I asked him. "Well..." he began. I cut him off "No, no you haven't. Because five year olds are physically incapable of keeping secrets." I stormed out of the room, and went to find Olive. I turned the corner to see Olive talking to Ed. I stopped dead in my tracks "...and you didn't even tell me I had a sister!" I heard Olive yell. Robert came walking out of the room and stopped beside me. Ed snapped his head up looking at me and Robert. "He/She did it!" we said in unison, each of us pointing at the other. I glared at him. I whispered under my breath "Do you want to be on my bad side?" He raised his hands in surrender. "I did it. It was my fault." said Robert. Ed just sighed in defeat. "Well she was going to find out at some point." He picked up Olive and walked over towards me and Robert. "Hey Olive." I said "So do you know how I became your nanny?" I asked. She shook her head no. "Well I said, remember when I told you about when Robert and I were at the orphanage? Well Robert grew up and got to leave. I am not all the way grown up yet, so I had to stay at the orphanage, but Robert told your daddy about me. Since I needed to get out of the orphanage, and you needed a nanny, your daddy adopted me, so I could be with my big brother Robert. But since I am so awesome," Olive laughed, and I continued "your daddy decided to let me and Robert live here, but I am only your sister if your daddy says so, otherwise I am just your nanny, and Robert is a plain old annoying man." Olive looked to her dad. She made her thinking face. "Daddy I think I want her to be my sister, not just my nanny. I still don't like the golden guy though, so can he not be my brother?" Ed smiled. "Sure, Miss Foster can be your sister." Olive smiled so wide I thought her cheeks would tear. She kissed her dad's cheek then pushed out of his hold to hug me. "I never had a sister before." she said, hugging tighter. Ed stepped forward "So if you want, you can umm change your name to Parker, or call me you know whatever, and can I call you my daughter, and umm maybe call you by your name and not just Miss Foster?" Ed questioned awkwardly. I stood up picking up Olive with me. "From what that last doctor said you already call me your daughter." Ed blushed a bit, knowing he had been caught. "So yes you can call me your daughter and also call me by my name, which I will keep as Violet Foster. I think I will refer to you as my dad, but I still want to call you Ed." He smiled, at first softly, then it turned into a big grin. "Alright!" he hugged us both "Then let's celebrate! I will cook dinner tonight...for my two daughters." At that point all three of us were smiling. We heard clapping coming from behind us. "Such a touching family moment. Now what about me?" asked Robert. "Well since it seems I make the conditions here you are still my brother, you can be Olive's cousin." I said. "Is that okay with you Olive?" I asked she nodded her head in agreement. It's official, no one else has said it, but it is official to me none the less. This is just about as green as it gets. I have a dad, a little sister, and a brother. I also have friends Julia and Sin. Green is about family, typically it is about physically building one, but I feel like we all kind of built this family. We are green, even if it doesn't show on my skin.

"Okay Olive, now that we are all family, we need to talk about how we treat your cousin." I said. Olive frowned "Fine." I put her down, and she walked over to Robert. "Sorry I insulted you, smooshed cupcakes on you, and cheered on sis when I thought she was gonna beat you up." she apologised half heartedly. As soon she was done talking she turned back towards me. "Ah not quite. Go give your cousin a hug to seal the apology." I said. "Uhhhhh!" Olive groaned, as she turned back to Robert and gave him the most pathetic hug I had ever seen. After that she ran back to me. Ed could be heard from the kitchen "No school tomorrow, we are going shopping!" I looked down and realised I was still wearing my dirty clothes. "I still need to go to work tomorrow too Ed. Hopefully after shopping." I said. I felt like little orphan Annie, except instead of a mutt, I brought along a giant golden brother doodle. I was finally part of something green.

The next day I went shopping with Olive to buy myself some clothes, the boys shopped for whatever boys shop for. With Ed's black credit card, that I could now use for myself (as his newly-appointed daughter), I decided to shop till I dropped. After going to store after store I had bought everything a fifteen year old girl could need, and Olive and I went to Build-a-Pet. I was ready for my for my first day at work. We went home once we met up with the boys again. We went home before I was to be dropped off at work, so I could prepare myself with my new clothes and makeup. I put on a sleek black, sleeveless, turtleneck jumpsuit. I wore black heels and silver hoop earrings that complimented my jumpsuit. I pulled my long white hair into a crown bun, then did my eye makeup in a dark color pallet. finishing things off with a dark red lipstick. I looked in the mirror, and hardly recognized myself. I had never worn clothes like these, I had never worn makeup, and I had never admired my skin or hair, but at this moment I thought that I looked pretty awesome.

I walked down three flights of stairs flawlessly despite being my first time wearing high heeled shoes. When I got to the bottom of the stairs Olive, Ed, and, Robert were all waiting for me. I was expecting complaints about how slow I was, but all I was met with was silence. Did I do something wrong? What happened? I looked worried. Then Olive said "My sister is gorgeous."
