Chapter 4 - Spider Beast

"Y-Young Master-"

Si Li trembling hand raised slowly and pointed above Lang Wei's head.

Her face blanched.

It appeared as if she had seen some ghosts.

"What?"

"S-Spide-er!"

"What? Are you scared of spiders? What about all 'I will get you out of here talk?' Hah?"

'Humph! That's how kids are supposed to act!'

"N-No t-that-"

"Then what?"

"S-Size-"

"Fine, I will squash it for you."

'Just watch me being your hero'

Lang Wei turned back with confidence to squash that 'spider', however, the moment his eyes landed on that 'spider', his confidence succumbed to the size of an atom.

His pupils shrank.

"Y-Young-"

Lang Wei quickly lurched forward and clamped a hand over Si Li's mouth to shut her up.

With a gulp and summoning enough courage, when he looked back, he was stunned.

His heart hammered wildly in his chest.

'Well, it wasn't a nice idea to seek out shelter in the cave. The real 'occupant' of the cave might not be happy to find intruders in his lodging.'

He leaned closer to Si Li and whispered. Lavender Scent entered his nostrils.

"Do not make a noise. The thing can't see us." His voice was as light as possible.

He glanced back in the Beast's direction.

For a second, a thought flashed across his mind whether he had been transmigrated to a set scene of a horror film.

A beast was clinging to the ceiling with its ten furry pitch-black legs. The place where Lang Wei was standing before, he had only a few inches distance between his head and the upside-down Beast's hanging head.

That thing resembled somewhat a spider.

However, compared to that Beast, the spiders on the Earth could only be called 'cute'.

Its head was huge; the size of five times Lang Wei's head. Half of his face was covered with eyes of different sizes. The liquid that had fallen on Lang Wei's neck a moment ago was actually it's drool. The Beast's jaw was ajar. Lang Wei and Si Li could clearly see it's sharp and huge canine teeth as it snored quietly in its sleep.

Lang Wei's hands grew sweaty.

His other hand slowly reached down into his sleeve. He only let a sigh of relief once he felt the talisman he had taken from his carriage was still there.

"Don't worry. Its eyes are closed. The Beast is asleep. As long as we don't make a noise, it won't notice us." Lang Wei assured Si Li in a whisper.

Si Li's face was ashen as if all the blood had left it.

The poor girl had never experienced anything of this sort before. It felt like she could faint at any moment.

'Luckily I had taken the talisman with me before I left. I had heard the two disciples say that the talisman can mask our spiritual presence. If not for that talisman, the Beast would have already sensed us the moment we had stepped into the cave. And by now, we would have already been being chewed between its teeth, serving a nice midday snack to the beast.'

Holding Si Li firmly, Lang Wei started to retreat from the cave slowly. All the time, he kept his eyes on the Beast.

It was breathing uniformly, not showing any signs of waking up.

Seeing this, blood started to run into Lang Wei's limbs once again. At last, they were at the edge of the cave when Lang Wei accidentally stepped on a dry stick of wood.

It cracked, creating a loud noise.

After the prior deadly silence, the noise was even more pronounced.

The noise reverberated across the cave.

One by one, the Beasts' several eyes started to open.

With each eye being opened, Lang Wei felt like he was suffering a fatal blow one time.

Lang Wei's soul had fled by the time all of its eyes opened and stared at him.

Si Li was about to cry.

And if not for Lang Wei's hand over her mouth, she would have cried already.

The Beast's eyes were dazed in the beginning as if it was not sure what had just happened. Slowly, they focused on two human children in front of it. Lang Wei could see their reflection in one of the biggest eyes of the Beast that was directly in front of them.

At that moment, Lang Wei knew there was no other escape.

One word emerged to his mind.

"RUN!!!"

And both of them ran for their precious life.

Adrenaline rushed to Lang Wei. After getting at a distance from the cave, he shoved Si Li to a separate path and continued to run to the other way.

That Spider Beast could only follow one.

"Better dead one that two."

Lang Wei had no sense of time or direction. One thing his brain focused on was to keep his legs moving at the maximum speed. After running for God knows how long, Lang Wei finally gathered enough nerves to glance back.

To his horror, the Beast was swiftly following behind him.

And it was catching up to him!

In desperation, he almost wanted to cry. 'God, if you really exist, let me tell you. This is not so fair! Other people enjoy at least a few days of peace before encountering any life-endangering situation after their transmigration. This is how things work!'

Lang Wei took several turns and twists to trick the Beast.

But the original body of the Lang Wei was not only knowledge-wise weaker, but it was also physically inadequate. Soon, his body started to give up. No matter how much he tried to push his body, the physical limitations caused him to slow down.

The Beasts had ten fat and furry legs. It was obviously at an advantage over a ten years old physically weak child.

Suddenly, a horizontally grown branch of a Banyan tree obstructed him.

"I'm screwed."

Nevertheless, Lang Wei tried to climb that thick grown branch with his small limbs. But, all of sudden, one of the legs of the Spider Beast reached up and grabbed his leg.

Before he could even tell what was happening, Lang Wei was pulled up by his leg, upside down.

Other than swinging his arms around in desperation, he could do nothing.

The Spider Beast turned him around. He came face to face with the several eyes of the Beasts, upside down.

It looked no less scary than it would have been if Lang Wei was straight.

Looking into the Beast's eyes, for a moment Lang Wei froze.

He held his breaths still.

His pupil shrank in size.

It was until the Beast's leg started to pull him closer towards its big mouth, Lang Wei broke out of the trance and wondered.

'Why did I had to even transmigrate when he had to die in such a gruesome way?'
