Chapter 23 - I’ll Help You Fight

Evelyn got ready for the day. She knew that she was going to see her Uncle and her family today. She put on a light layer of foundation and swiped on light shade of eyeshadow. She put on a thin line of eyeliner and subtle pink lipstick.

When she finished she went to pick out her clothes. She pulled out a pair of dark grey dress pants and paired it with a navy blue, chiffon buttoned blouse with a bow neck tie.

When she finished she did a last check on her hair then went to the safe. She grabbed the copy of the divorce papers, prenup, and medical records of the miscarriages. She placed them into the small briefcase.

Today she felt a little stronger. She was emotionally calmer now that she had a night to vent. She had a goal now. She thought about anything else she might need and recalled that the photo of Shawn and that woman was in her purse as well as her wedding rings. She took them out and put them into the briefcase.

Shawn didn't honor the promises they made to each other so now she intended on making him pay with the stipulations that were put into place to protect her. She was thankful now that her father and grandparents insisted on such a thing. She didn't want to ruin him, but her pride wouldn't let her simply sit back.

The way he spoke to her about his cheating and she the fact that she didn't give him a child and how he was doing her a favor by even giving her five percent. It infuriated her. She tried to give him a child, three times. When she lost them, no one was more heartbroken than her.

She knew that he was worried that if she did get half of his shares, then she could fight him for the CEO position. When they got married and he took over the position of CEO, he had given her 5 percent. Shawn and his family had a combined total of 50 percent. The Wei family had 15 percent. The remaining was split between Jinhai had 20 percent and he already promised his shares to her if she wanted them. The other 10 percent was split between 3 individuals.

If Evelyn really wanted to, she could fight him for the CEO position. She could get enough backing behind her. She didn't want to take things that far, but she would if he pushed her.

She shook the thoughts off. She hoped it didn't come to that.

A knock on the door jolted her. She got up and walked to the door and looked through the peephole. It was Mingxi. Evelyn opened the door to let her in.

"Good morning. Are you ready?" Mingxi asked. Evelyn nodded. She grabbed her purse and briefcase. She checked to make sure she had her phone and key card then followed Mingxi out the door.

"Driver Chung is already downstairs." Mingxi told her.

"Okay." Mingxi didn't say anything else seeing that her boss wasn't in a talkative mood. Evelyn's hangover had went away with the help of coffee, food, a cold shower, and aspirin.

When they got downstairs Driver Chung greeted her and got the door for them. She gave him instructions to drive her to Uncle Wai's Law firm. She sent her uncle a text to let her know she was coming and he replied instantly to let her know that he was already there waiting for her.

Then she took a breath and called her father.

"Daughter, how are you?" Her father greeted her when he picked up the phone.

"Ba, I'm good. I was just calling to see if you and the twins were busy tonight." She said.

"I can find out what they're doing," he said.

"What's going on?" He asked.

"I have something I want to tell you guys tonight, and I wanted to do it over dinner." She said. She purposefully stayed vague. After all, you don't blurt out that you're getting divorced and had a miscarriage over the phone with your parent.

"I'll make sure they're there. Did you want to go somewhere?" He asked her.

"No, I was going to stop by the Wei Manor this afternoon." Evelyn said.

"Will Shawn be coming with you?" He asked.

"No." She said.

"Alright, I'll see you tonight." Her father said.

"See you then," she replied before she hung up.

The car was silent except for the radio. There was a news channel on, relaying the news. There was nothing interesting. Evelyn wondered how long before news of the impending divorce was going to make it onto headlines.

When they got there Evelyn and Mingxi got out of the car.

"I need you to look up appropriate places for me," Evelyn said to Mingxi.

"Any specifics?" She asked.

"Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, at least one of them needs to have a tub, the kitchen needs to have an island," Evelyn said.

"Do you want it pre-furnished?" Mingxi asked.

"No, I want to buy new furniture. We can do that tomorrow or the day after." Evelyn said.

After giving her instructions she went inside to meet with her Uncle.

"Xiaoli," he greeted her.

"Uncle," she replied.

"Have a seat," he said gesturing to the couch in his office. He took the seat next to her.

"How are you?" He asked, genuine concern in his voice.

"I'm okay," she said. She gave him a small smile. He sighed.

"Tell me what happened," he said. She did. She told him all about him asking for a divorce, the cheating, her getting fired, and the miscarriage. He sat there absorbing everything she said as she said it with a straight face.

He didn't comment on it, he knew she wouldn't respond well to it.

"Are you trying to get all his assets?" He asked instead.

"No. All our assets attained in the passed five years are supposed to be split in half. I'm just fighting to uphold the prenup." She replied.

"You're doing this because you lost the baby. Because when you lost the baby, he was out with that woman. You're angry because while you're going through it he did this." Her Uncle said.

Her uncle could always call her out. She nodded. Her uncle wrapped his arm around her then. In the past he went through a messy divorce. This little girl had told him not to let the divorce turn him bitter. This little girl somehow knew what to say to him to make things a little bit easier. It's why he adored his goddaughter.

He was happy to see that she wasn't bitter but levelheaded. Maybe it was all the pain she had to go through that she was so calm now. On one hand, that made him proud of her. On the other it broke his heart that she had to go through what she went through.

"I'll help you," he said. She smiled. He took the papers from her to make a copy. He was going to draft up a counter suit for the divorce. He was going to do his best to get her what she wanted.

When they finished discussing business they went for lunch. Evelyn brought Mingxi and her Driver along.

When they finished Driver Chung drove back to Wei Manor. That's where he lived ever since his wife died. Her father didn't want him to be by himself.

It was about 4 o'clock when they arrived.
