Chapter 7 - Small talk in the garden

I breathed in the Spring air and sighed. My God this garden truly is a window into heaven. Water from the small pond sparked like diamonds under the sun. Insects and hummingbirds adorned the view. Pink tulips and white roses decorated the grass. I shivered. Centipedes have so many legs. Imagine if that many legs ran on you at the same time. Ugh! What a terrible thought to ruin the moment!

I looked to see Haruto look at me before blushing and turning his face. I chuckled. What a cute response.

"Haruto, I'm sorry to ask but where is your mother? I haven't seen her yet?"

Haruto chuckled before answering.

"She's having her beauty sleep. My mother values beauty as she wants to meet her daughter in law in her best form."

I sighed.

"I'm still not your official fiancée. We are putting it off until I can prove myself with this product."

Haruto chuckled before mumbling.

"We'll see."

I turned my face quickly.

WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN? I chuckled. What a cheeky asshole. I am a chemistry prodigy yet he doubts my ability to make a simple wine. I stroked my chin. The only problem that I'm going to have is with the taste. Due to the limited amount of isinglass the wine is goin to taste vastly bitter. Based on the stories I've read about the prohibition time, most alcohol tastes like dishwater due to the fear of being caught by the cops. I sighed. I've never had any good run-ins with the police. In my previous life they repeatedly visited my house and took my father away for drug use. I chuckled softly. Even in my new life I'm exposed to crime. For some reason I felt like I was about to cry. I've already suffered so much in my previous life. After finally getting into Columbia University and having a chance to change my future I ducking die. How pathetic.

Haruto put his hand on my shoulder. I looked at him. My heart skipped a beat. He was smiling gently as he ruffled my hair.

"You should smile more Astrid you look really beautiful when you do."

I blushed and smacked his hand away. I walked faster ahead.

"I don't need to smile, and I already look beautiful without a smile."

Haruto chuckled as he lightly jogged to stand next to me. We continued to enjoy each other's company for a few minutes as we walked around the garden. I found myself smiling as I thought that this life might not be that bad.

Or so I thought.
