Haruto dropped down his shades to cover his azure eyes as we drove into the city. His lips were pursed as his hand slightly trembled on the wheel. I sighed. I didn't think that the son of a Yakuza boss would actually be afraid of such an event. I sighed. Maybe I should stop judging people by their identities.
I looked out the window in shock. 1920's NYC was way different than the 21st century. During modern times NYC is a place that is crowded and full of large broadcasting TV's everywhere. The New York City that I was seeing now was kind of barren, full of shops and automobiles. There were a limited amount of skyscrapers scattered about. The buildings weren't run down but instead looked new. Women dressed in long tight silk dresses walked the streets next to their suit wearing husbands or boyfriends. Several police officers ran after some thieving kids. A paper boy yelled out "extra, extra". I smiled. As a chemist my main passion is watching the beautiful development of elements once they react. To be able to see a reaction like that of NYC's development filled my chemist heart with happiness.
I turned to see Haruto focused on the road. The air between us felt extremely tension-filled. Human relationships are quite frustrating. Now that I think about it, what kind of relationship do the two of us really have? It's kind of useless to figure out the reality of it since it is going to be a short lived one after all. I watched the street get more and more crowded with automobiles. We must be nearing downtown for real. I pulled out the small paper from my coat pocket which read the lab address. I turned as my eyes set on a large rundown building to the side. I patted Haruto's shoulder.
"Slow down the car Haruto! I'm go into stop here, the lab is right next to us. Why don't you find a parking spot before coming to find me?"
Haruto smirked before he nodded.
"Have you finally fallen for me Astrid?"
"Shut up bastard, I just dislike you less. Don't get ahead of yourself."
Haruto chuckled as he said.
"Well that progress at least."
I nodded and tipped my fedora at Haruto before I stepped out of the automobile. Haruto then sped away as he looked for a parking spot. I inhaled the smell of ammonia before knocking on the door. Excitement filled me as I held my briefcase close to my chest. The building seemed utterly out of place for its location in downtown New York City. Dr. McKinnon must have some good connections to be able to keep this building. As the door opened I smiled and said.
"Hello Dr. McKinnon, I'm Astrid and I'm here today to-Jesus Christ what the hell happened?"
I stepped back in surprise as the puffed hair of all of my lab team members faced me along with their scratched faces. Dr. McKinnon's glasses were crooked and cracked down the middle. My team members smiled as they said.
"Welcome to the McKinnon laboratory Astrid."
I slapped my forehead. I'm starting to already have my doubts about my decision. I entered the room and said with a sigh.
"Thank you for having me today."
