Darkness can have multiple tones to it based on the environment. Feelings, setting and, surprisingly, the light all have an effect on what type of mood darkness brings with it. For example, when you go to get a glass of water in the middle of the night, what do you feel when you come back to your room full of darkness? Do you feel comfort in the familiarity of the place? Do you feel fear when you step into the nearly pitch black room, running from something that you know is not there? Would you indifferently walk into the room because you're not a wuss? Here's another situation: you're going camping overnight and look up and around the campsite and sky? What do you feel when look into the darkness of the infinite cosmos or mysterious nature?
