I look at him for several seconds before saying "I'm busy Ambrose. Please settle the rest with Shelly and I will get in touch with you about the killings." Ambrose continues to give me a knowing smile as he nods and stands while saying "Very well, my lady. I look forward to your call."
When he walks out of my office, I use my magic once again to close the door before falling back into my chair. I silently rub my face with frustration as I try to keep myself from yelling. I've been flying under the radar for years and now BOOM!
I have not just one, but two powerful men circling me and I can't help but feel like a little rabbit stuck between two large bears. When I hear him finally leave, I sigh and lean back with an irritated growl.
I shut off my computer and walk out to find a plate of fresh-baked cookies in Shelly's hand. I smile at her and grab one with a "Thanks" I bite into it and moan with delight. Shelly chuckles at me and says "It looks like you'll have a busy night tonight. Are you sure it's safe to work for the Vampire? He seems awfully interested in you."
I nod at her and say "I'll be careful, don't worry. If anything else happens, call me on my cell. I'm heading over to the Tanners." Shelly nods and waves me off after shoving another cookie in my mouth. Mmmm, white chocolate chip macadamia nut, one of my favorites.
I walk over to my car and get in, ignoring the few pairs of eyes watching me. By the feel of their magic, I'd say they were shifters. I punch in the Tanner's address on google maps and take off. Luckily, they only live ten minutes away but when I pull into the drive, the door opens.
Mrs. Tanner slightly waves at me as I get out of the car. I nod at her before popping my trunk and begin pulling out my gear. I grab a few things and when I shut the trunk, I jump when I see Mrs. Tanner standing there watching me.
I awkwardly smile at the woman and say "I just needed to grab a few things, ready?" She doesn't say a word as she nods her head and leads me to the house. The second I step over the threshold into the house, evil slides over me like a cold chill down my spine.
Did I mention how much I don't like dealing with demons and possessions!? I grit my teeth and walk onto the dimly lit living room. Noticing my confusion, Mrs. Tanner leans in close and whispers "He doesn't like the light so I can only keep one light on."
I nod and follow her towards the back of the house but when we reach the room at the end of the hall, I can practically feel the demon on my skin. I turn to Mrs. Tanner and ask her "Do you have any kids or pets?"
Mrs. Tanner nods and says "We have three children. I sent them to my parents when I started noticing Jim's odd behavior." I nod and say "Good job. I need you to grab your keys and your purse, head to the store, the movies or maybe just go for a long drive until I call you to come back. You can't be here for this."
She looks to the door and hesitates before nodding and quickly leaving. I roll my shoulders and crack my neck before slowly turning the handle and opening the door. The room is pitch black and smells like sulfur. A dead give away to a lesser demon.
I kick the door open all the way and walk into the room with my head held high. I use my magic to seal the entire room as I throw my bag on the king-sized bed. I quickly glance around the normal-looking room before locking onto the closet.
The doors were shut tight but as I take a step forward, the door slightly pops open. A dirty hand slowly reaches out and opens the door wider. When I come face to face with the demon crouched on the floor before me, I sneer at it and say "You're a long way from home."
It hisses at me and says "Mind your own business witch!" I smirk at the thing and say "Funny that you say that... you see, this is my business. The man's wife hired me to get rid of you. So, are you going to leave or will I be killing you tonight?"
"Do not interfere with my mission, witch!" It hisses at me again making me roll my eyes. It's nasty, sure but it's also just a lesser demon. I slowly lift my hand and say "I'll give you the count of three to leave the poor man or this is going to hurt."
The thing lunges straight at me, catching me off guard! I fall back and land on the bed with the demon landing on top of me with an ear-piercing screech. I bring my knee up and knee him in the stomach as I force him to roll over.
I straddle the demon and summon a magical blade, lifting it to kill the thing but it suddenly kicks me with both feet. I fly across the room and hit the wall with enough force to leave an outline of my body on it.
Glass breaks as the demon crashes through the window at full speed. I curse under my breath and quickly follow it. How the hell did it break through the seal I placed on the room? The demon runs straight into the woods causing me to curse again. I could shift into my other form but I wouldn't be able to use my magic correctly and I don't want to kill the human.
Gritting my teeth, I dig my black boots into the soft ground and take off after him. The damn thing is fast! I jump over fallen branches and duck under others as I silently follow the fleeing demon. My eyes flash with excitement when I feel the thrill of the hunt... the chase... it was invigorating!
My speed picks up and before the demon realizes it, I'm tackling it from behind. We both roll several times as we exchange blows with each other. He's lucky he's wearing the human or else I would have really laid into him. I keep telling myself over and over, don't kill the human, don't kill the human as I beat the ever living mess out of him.
