THAT NIGHT, ALICE couldn't sleep well. She had been tucked in bed for hours, tossing and turning to no end. Yet, despite the silvery moon that hung in the sky, Alice was left more awake than when she had crawled into bed.
'A flame that is you, my beloved Alice.'
She could still hear Spade's words from earlier on echoing in her head. He had left shortly after his mini confession, leaving her speechless and stunned.
Frustrated, Alice kicked at the covers. She twisted and pulled at the sheets, sitting up exasperatedly with a groan. In the end, only silence replied her, a constant reminder that even the night was beginning to mock her for her miserable fate.
Looking to the window, Alice paused. The room that Spade had offered her was much grander than the room she had in the Ragan's Estate. However, one similar fact remained and that was the giant glass window that opened up to reveal a balcony.
