Chapter 41 - Battle's End

Shi met Akio, deflecting an overhead chop and attempting to get in closer. Akio turned away from Shi's follow-up thrust and slashed at his back. Shi rolled away, narrowly avoiding Akio's slack as he opened up a bit of distance.

Akio rushed forwards, blade leading. He attacked Shi with a brutal series of chops and thrusts, that forced Shi to back up constantly while barely dodging and deflecting the attacks. Akio brought up his sword and Shi, seeing the opening darted forwards, getting a small slash in on Akio's side before having to block Akio's sword with his karambit, knocking him off balance.

Akio tried to take advantage of Shi's lack of balance with a quick thrust, but Shi fell backwards into a roll, recovering back to his feet while taking a cut on his right shoulder. As Akio charged in, Shi took a step back, before rolling forwards under Akio's blind chop. Shi ducked down and deflected Akio's next strike up over his head before going in and stabbing his karambit into Akio's side, barely getting out in time to avoid Akio's return strike.

Suddenly, Akio's eyes cleared up, focus returning to the previously rage-driven man. Akio started advancing slowly, wincing at the pain in his side. Shi feinted a rush, before jumping back and throwing a kunai at each of Akio's limbs and another at his head.

Akio had stepped back in response to the feint, giving him just enough time to dive to the side, swatting the kunai meant for his left leg out of the air as he did so. Akio rolled to his feet and immediately started falling back as Shi rushed in towards him, karambit flashing in the midday sun.

Shi rushed in feinting a slash at Akio's throat before bringing his hand down and stabbing at Akio's side. Akio twisted out of the way, aiming a chop at Shi's exposed back. Shi lunged into Akio, bumping him off balance and making the chop miss by a hair's breadth.

As Akio took a step back, Shi pressed forwards, staying inside Akio's guard. Shi went straight for Akio's throat but Akio blocked the karambit and forced it down. Akio swung his sword upwards towards Shi's head but Shi leaned back, narrowly dodging the blade.

Shi stumbled back, throwing three kunai at Akio's chest to buy time. Akio stopped to block the kunai before falling back in his stance. Shi tried to dart in close but Akio fell back while throwing out free strikes while Shi was out of his karambit's range.

Shi threw two kunai at Akio, rushing in behind them. Akio sidestepped the kunai and stabbed at Shi, meeting nothing but air as Shi stopped and threw another kunai at Akio. Akio tried to dodge the kunai but it lodged in his left arm.

As Akio fell back, Shi threw his remaining 4 kunai at him. Akio used the remainder of his mana supply to make a mana shield which blocked the kunai. He then sent the mana shield at Shi, knocking him down.

Shi rolled away from Akio, but couldn't avoid being stabbed in his left shoulder. Shi stumbled to his feet, backing away from Akio to create some space. Akio pressed his advantage, constantly stabbing and slashing at Shi, giving him no room to operate.

Shi reached for his back, going for a kunai that wasn't there and taking a slash on the side for it. Akio smiled when he saw the gesture and continued pressing forwards. Shi used a touch of his extremely limited mana reserves to give power to a backwards leap, getting out of Akio's range.

Akio continued his forward rush coming in close, as he slashed down at Shi, Shi brought his karambit up. Instead of using the blade, Shi used the rock cast he had made around his ring finger to deflect the sword stroke, allowing Shi to stab Akio in the side again.

Akio fell back, blood pouring from his side and soaking his tunic. Shi rushed forwards but Akio recovered and slashed at Shi. Shi fell back, but Akio used the dregs of mana that he had naturally recovered throughout the fight to raise a tiny bit of the ground behind Shi, tripping him and making him stumble.

Akio rushed in, constantly attacking Shi to keep him off balance. Akio kept a keen eye on Shi, waiting for his opportunity. It came when Shi reached for his back in panic, Akio pressed forwards, chopping down at Shi while he was defenceless.

A chill ran through Akio right before he made contact with Shi, rattling him to his core. Shi used the slight delay to dodge the strike meant for his head. Akio looked down, and saw a mana spear sprouting out of his stomach.

Shi collapsed from exhaustion, barely hanging on to his consciousness. Suddenly, searing pain erupted from the right side of his chest. Shi fell in and out of consciousness as his chest hurt more and more, before getting to the point where Shi was sure that his chest was going to explode.

As the pain reached its crescendo, Shi blacked out. Shi woke up to a sky that looked roughly the same, feeling strangely invigorated. He checked his mana core and found what he expected, a new purple glow was coming from his chest.

Shi activated war cry and rushed towards the sounds of the melee going on. When Shi arrived, he charged right into the back of the invading army, raining fire and death upon anyone near him. He surrounded himself in a cloak of flames that scorched anyone that he came in contact with.

Screams rang out from the people burnt to death as Shi made his way back to the castle. When he made it back, Shi hopped up on the walls and took 30 seconds to summon a ton of mana which he turned into lava. "Get inside!" Shi bellowed with enough volume to make everyone's ears start ringing. Hyousuke organized a retreat and once the majority of his men made it back inside, Shi released his lava spell, covering the entire area where the battle had been taking place in molten rock.

Thousands of screams rang out, sending chills down the spines of all watching, Shi smiled as he saw the end of the invaders, before blacking out.
