Soon Jay had arrived looking out at the approaching Goblin army. After going up the wooden rampant he could easily see the enemy forces. About 300 meters away 50 small green-skinned creatures could be seen. Most of the goblins were naked holding some basic weapons, but there were a few exceptions to this.
One of the goblins seemed to be wearing an old robe, additionally, this goblin was also holding a wooden staff with a gem lodged on top of it. Then there were also 2 goblins that were slightly taller than the others and had elven ears showing the race of their mothers. Both of these were holding bows and had a quiver on their backs.
After a minute had passed, Jay heard some noise from behind him. Twenty farmers could be seen standing in 2 neat lines. Despite only having been in training for 2 days they already seemed to be drilled into shape at least a bit. None of the newly formed soldiers showed any sign of curiosity or fear, unlike the farmers that had joined more recently.
He was clear about the choices he had now. The first option was to wait out the attack. Depending on the capabilities of the goblin mage they might not be able to breach the walls. However, even though goblins certainly weren't smart, they weren't complete idiots either. They would then surely come back with either a fire or reinforcements. If they did the latter the situation could get a lot worse.
The other option was to go out and fight. Even though they were most certainly going to suffer losses, it would get the troops battle experience and a few more weapons. But before he could make a decision, a notification popped up.
Fighting For Power Mission 1: Kill all goblins |
Reward: F+ grade armor, ? |
Seeing this notification Jay immediately steeled his mind, now there was no more question of what they were going to do. The reason for this wasn't for the F-grade armor, nor was it for the reward that had yet to be revealed. The reason he immediately decided was because it stated 'Mission 1'. This meant that this was part of a chain mission that would, without exception, give great rewards once completed fully.
Soon the goblins came within 50 meters of the gate, at which point Jay gave the order for the soldiers to advance. The group of militia was divided into 2 lines. Up front were the 10 swordfighters who had to keep the enemy occupied while behind them were the spearmen, they would support the swordsmen and strike when openings appeared.
But then the militia came out of the gate the goblins didn't stop advancing for even a moment, not intimidated in the slightest. A few of the swordfighters in the front started to get nervous seeing the scary green creatures get closer by every passing second, meanwhile, most of the spearmen weren't able to keep their spears straight, causing them to sway a bit.
No matter how hard they got trained, fully transforming farmers into soldiers was simply impossible, or well, it was when only given a few days.
Soon the goblins were upon them. The way these creatures fought was very different then they had expected, they kept rushing forward and struck at the legs instead of the head like they had expected. General Green also had to take some blame for this as he only had a proper understanding of humans and hence trained his soldiers to fight humans.
The goblins were extremely reckless creatures, they ran fast and some directly jumped onto the militia causing the formation to fall apart in seconds.
After the initial impact, the militia was unable to group up again and as the goblins would each decide upon a target, they all had to fight 2 goblins at once. Moreover, every time a soldier fell the pressure on the survivors would increase.
Soon, blood was covering many of the goblins' faces making them even scarier, their weapons covered in blood they intimidated the soldiers even further.
Behind the fighting lines 3 goblins stood still, silently looking at the brawl before them. If something happened they would be able to quickly interfere but in a battle like this their skills were mostly useless. The archers didn't have the best aim and the magician only knew AOE (Area-Of-Effect) spells.
The goblin mage was content, this was the first time his children fought sentient creatures and they were winning the fight as they should, he indeed had the best genes!
Yet before he could think of plundering the village hidden behind the thin wooden walls he felt something against his back… no... his stomach? Looking down he saw a metallic blade covered with sticky green blood penetrating his stomach, before he had fully comprehended he was stabbed in the back, he fell down alerting the half-elf archers close to him.
Pulling back his sword General Green spent a moment making sure the goblin mage was dead. Jay Collin had given him the task of widely circling around and taking care of the mage before he made a move. After he was certain the mage was dead he looked at the archers on either side of him. The half-elves soon recovered from their momentary stupor and started running away both in a different direction, they they weren't fleeing. After he got some distance away the half-elf on the left fired his first arrow at General Green which was easily blocked, once General Green started running towards this half-elf the one on his right shot an arrow at him. It was clear he was going to be busy for a while if he wanted to kill these two.
The situation on the main battlefield was clear for all to see. Even though the militia had become more ferocious compared to when the battle first started, at this point they each already had to face 3 goblins making their fights extremely hard. Green and red blood mixed making the ground filled with a brown liquid. Something which in turn caused it to become muddier making traversing harder for all.
When the fight was reaching its climax a loud voice could be heard.
"Good, good. You all truly are worthy of being part of my army." Jay's well-defined face could be seen among the mayhem, his red hair blowing in the wind, he was walking in the middle of the battlefield as if he was on a stroll.
Hearing his upbeat tone obviously enraged the fierce goblins, causing 2 of the creatures to immediately jump at him. Yet just a moment later both of these ferocious creatures died. Once was directly impaled by a spear while another was grabbed by Jay's glowing hand directly burning its face off.
The rest of this battle could only be called utterly confusing for the goblins. From the start they only had to do 1 thing. Go to the human closest to them and start hitting them, but now there was something else. After a few more goblins attacked Jay and were promptly killed each of the goblins had to decide whether they should keep fighting the closest human as they had or attack the strong human that wasn't in any trouble.
This, of course, was the reason he had decided to attack now. The goblins were only going after him 2 at a time which allowed him to easily dispatch him. In the eyes of the soldiers this would make it seem as if he was some crazy strong being who didn't even put this goblin in his eyes. While in fact, if he were to be attacked by 4 goblins at once he wouldn't be able to do much better then these soldiers. After all, such a fight would quickly take up more and more time thus draining his stamina.
The thing that surprised him most was his magic capacity. Despite only having 2 mana he was able to dispatch 6 enemies with the basic level burning hand spell. This was nearly double the efficiency he had in his previous life, an enormous difference.
Not only did Jay dispatch about a dozen enemies, but he also reignited the troops fighting spirit.
As the humans they were fighting were acting more ferocious and the enemy behind them seemed to dispatch of any goblin that would come to him some of the goblins entered a confused state. They had never experienced something like this. When they would meet a strong opponent an explosion would happen and the enemy would die. These dumb creatures didn't even realize that was the mages doing as anything other than rushing followed by killing, burning and capturing women was beyond their understanding.
Hence, once these goblins reached a confused state they were as good as dead, and would be quickly dispatched of by the soldier they were fighting.
Defeating the goblins no longer took much effort and soon General Green also returned, other than a single arrow wound in his arm he was completely unharmed, he had also carried the 2 half-elf corpses back with him.
