Chapter 69 - The tale of the eleven dragon slayers

After he was done admiring the infrastructure, Reeve paid twenty-five silver coins to the librarian, who was sitting at a counter just outside the main hall. Without wasting much time, he went inside. The main hall was even larger than the outside, and there were countless shelves full of books of various sizes. Well, the shelves weren't really countless, but Reeve couldn't count them all.

Now, for some time, Reeve stood there, bedazzled by the awesomeness … actually, instead of calling it bedazzlement, it's better to say he didn't know where to start. There were so many shelves arranged in no obvious order, so it was difficult to make the decision of which shelf to approach first. After doing a random selection, he approached one shelf which was much closer to where he was standing.

There were a lot of books, and it felt like he was back in the college library. The titles of the books were really interesting. There was a book called, 'The tale of the eleven dragon slayers.'

'Eh? There were dragons in this world? Or is this book a fictional story? Well, there's no harm in finding out, is there?' he thought, as he took the book and went to sit on a table.

The book started by telling him that the story was a legend, and that most of the facts were lost in the passage of time. As he read this, he sighed. However, he kept on reading.

According to the book, a dragon angered one of the seven Ancients of magic, and as punishment, the ancient killed most of the dragons, save Yggdrasiloren, the king of dragons. Besides the king of dragons, there were four other dragons that the Ancient did not kill.

'So, one dragon angers this guy and he goes on a genocide? No wonder the funny deity told me to stay far away from these guys! They seem like very bad news!' Reeve thought, as he read. 'But then again, I still don't know who they are…'

The dragon king, Yggdrasiloren, knew that he couldn't fight against an Ancient, so he decided to take out his anger on the humans, who were the weakest. Since the Ancients were not protectors of the humans, the humans suffered at the dragon king's wrath.

When the humans realized that their villages and cities were getting razed to the ground, they approached one of the Ancients. Now, the names of the Ancients have been lost in the passage of time, therefore it is unknown which Ancient they approached, and how.

'Pretty convenient… This story happened over four hundred years ago, so how are these Ancients still alive? And since they weren't protectors of humanity, why did the humans approach them?' Reeve pondered.

The Ancient took pity on the humans, and he forged eleven powerful weapons, each with a power to slay a dragon.

'Wait, what? Why didn't he just kill the damn dragons? I mean he could have just gone ahead and killed the dragons, or if he didn't want to, he could have warned them, since it seems as if the dragons were afraid of these guys', Reeve thought.

With the weapons, the human council selected the most powerful individuals among them, and then gave them the weapons. These eleven individuals became known as the eleven dragon slayers, and using the weapons, they managed to kill one of the four remaining dragons.

'Eh … really? How?'

One of the three remaining dragons decided to leave the dragon king's service, and no one knows where he went. The other two dragons banded together and attacked the dragon slayers. After a brutal fight, the dragon slayers managed to slay the dragons, but they were severely injured. This left the humans defenseless. There were other humans who coveted the powerful dragon slaying weapons, and this caused a civil war among the humans.

'I guess greed will always be the end of humanity, no matter which world …' Reeve sighed as he thought about this.

Eleven other people took up the weapons, and they decided to attack the dragon king, Yggdrasiloren. However, even with the weapons, the humans were thoroughly defeated. The eleven weapons were lost after the battle, and the dragon king went on a rampage, and destroyed most of the human settlements.

'Wait, so he just let the other dragon go, just like that? This dragon king has serious issues! And how did the humans get defeated if the weapons were the ones which gave them power to defeat the dragons in the first place?'

When it seemed as if all hope was lost, the eleven dragon slayers rose up again, with the weapons which had been lost. In one last battle, they fought against the king of dragons, and in the end, they won. This was a major victory for humanity, but the cost of this victory was too high.

'Eh? Where did they get the weapons, if they were lost?'

The dragon slayers died shortly afterwards, and the human council decided to bury them in separate crypts, with their weapons. The Ancient who had forged the weapons prophesied that Yggdrasiloren will return.

'Wait, the Ancients can do that? What the f… What the hell are they?' Reeve was flabbergasted. Actually, it was more like he was confused. These Ancients seemed like they could do anything and everything.

Therefore, to prepare for the return of the dragon king, the Ancient sealed the eleven dragon slayers in a vegetative state. It has been said that, they will rise again to defend humanity when the dragon king returns.

'What a load of bull… I mean, the Ancient can simply kill the dragon king, why the f… why would he … I'm very confused. And what was that about sealing them in a vegetative state? Weren't these guys dead? Do these Ancients even have a limit?'

Reeve closed the book, and returned it to the shelf where he had taken it. He had reached his limit of tolerating crap … or so he thought, until, as he was walking back to the seat, he saw a book titled, 'The origin of magic: A story of the Ancients'.

That's when he stopped.
