Chereads / Epic of the Immortal Rain / Chapter 4 - Friendly Faces

Chapter 4 - Friendly Faces

The next day Rain woke up and looked around the dark room. Everyone was still asleep. He propped himself up and looked around. His eyes were starting to adjust to the darkness as he silently stood up. There was no candlelight and the sun had yet to rise. He drew in a deep breath and looked at those sleeping forms surrounding him. After grabbing his sword he walked over to a door leading into another room. He looked at the decrepit state of the room. After taking in the state of disrepair he stabbed his blade into the floor just deep enough that the hilt was at his chest. He held tight to the black leather wrapped handle and flipped his body into the air palming the pommel of his blade. His body completely inverted held up by just his palm bounced into the air once more and he landed with his right index finger perfectly centered on the pommel. He slowly moved his left leg into a pinched position and his free hand behind his back. He stayed in that position balancing himself as every muscle on his body trembled for hours. As he continued training his body Eric Draven was having a conversation with his wife. "I have to find him Leanne." He said with a stern face. She looked back at him. "How do you even know he's alive? If he got caught up by those bandits or something." She argued. "Believe me I fought with him and no bandits here in Magnolia are enough to take that boy!" He shouted. "You didn't fight that boy! You were holding back I'm not an idiot. Listen to me Eric. I hope that boy is still alive as well but it's been two days and you've had triple the amount of watch patrolling to find him and they haven't seen anything. What if he's left Magnolia?" She sighed softly. "You're right, I did hold back. But so did he or I would be dead. That's not a normal kid running around. That boy is an Alister and I swore to his father as he died that I wouldn't leave him alone. So I have to find him." He said in a helpless tone. "I know he didn't want to come here but he stayed for a year. Why would he willingly up and leave?" His voice exasperated as he looked at his wife. "I don't know Eric. But what will you do if you find him? And what will you do if he refuses to come home? I know you took him in but even he cannot replace Malcom. If you truly believe that there is no one capable of killing or hurting him then… Then give him some time. I'm sure he will come back." She walked forward to console him. Rain heard a slight creak and his eyes flew open. "You may as well say something if you plan on standing in the doorway." Rain said as if his body was under no strain at all. Jinx laughed a bit and walked forward. "Ya know at first I thought you ran back to that Lieutenant. And when I seen the door open I was gonna yell at you for scaring me. But after seeing that…" He paused for a moment motioning to him holding himself up by just a finger. "Well, I lost mah words.." He chuckled again. Rain took a deep breath and popped his body off the blade and landed perfectly on the ground. His body was drenched in sweat and his raven hair clung to his face as he smiled. "Just some light training before the sun rises." He said gripping his blade and pulling it smoothly out of the ground. "Light training… You call that light training?" Jinx stared at him with an open mouth. Rain smiled back. "Well, is it just you or is everyone awake now?" He asked, changing the subject. "Blades up to teach ya 'bout finesse with… smaller blades." He laughed. "But everyone else is still out. Since the coppers are still thick we can't go out too much right now.." He looked at Rain. "I can use daggers." Rain said without giving it a second thought. Blades walked up and leaned against the doorway. "Yeah well, I'll be the judge of that. Gotta reason they calling me Blades." He smirked and a dagger appeared in his hand. "You got one Rain?" Rain nodded and pulled a small dagger from behind his waist. He stared at it for a moment then looked up. "Well let's get to training." A smirk formed on both of their faces. Jinx walked out of the room as the two boys clashed their blades. It didn't even take a minute before Blades was on his back and a dagger at his throat. "Well… we might just startin to call you Blades instead." He smirked and laughed as Rain withdrew his blade and reached out to help him up. "I'm pretty partial to Rain actually." He chuckled as he lifted the boy to his feet. The boy laughed genuinely. "Ya really gotsta stop using them big fancy words. Only one of us understand its gotsta be Maron." He smiled at Blades. "Keep your name is all I'm saying." He wrapped his arm across his friend's shoulder as they walked back into the main room. Jinx looked up and laughed. "Well?" The two boys looked at each other and smiled. "He's good." Blades said through his grin. "I think he could take out the Rucks all together just by isself." Jinx had a grin on his face as he looked at Rain. "I knew ya were good. So hows bout you start leaving that chunk of iron here when we go out. It'd be too easy ta pick ya out the crowd with that blade on yer back." Rain didn't like the idea of not having his sword however he nodded his head. "Ok." Jinx patted his back. "Let's wake em all up and eat some chow." He said as he walked over to Feltz and tapped his shoulder. Feltz slowly opened his eyes and muttered. "Huh? Is it mornin already?" Jinx rolled his eyes as they woke everyone up. The group trekked through the hallways of the rundown complex into a kitchen. Feltz started to rummage through the cabinets and Halt looked over at Rain who was diligently studying the surroundings. "It's a bit rundown yeah?" He smiled trying to talk to Rain. Rain looked over at him and nodded. "Yeah. Why was it abandoned?" Halt tilted his head a bit. "Dunno. They built this place for people who couldn't afford a place to sleep. Didn't work out. Been like this since I was a youngin." Rain nodded. "Your name is Halt right?" He asked and Halt nodded. "Since I fell in wit Jinx." Rain looked at him with a confused look. "So your name isn't Halt?" He asked. Halt smiled as Feltz finally found what he was looking for. "Is now. That's all at matters you know." He smiled and walked towards Feltz. "You keep eating like at an yous gonna get even bigger." He snickered as he pointed to the box of cookies Feltz had. "Oh yeah Halt. Yous wanna go?" He said setting the box of cookies down and reaching out towards Halt. Halt moved to the left so the hand passed right by him. "Yous don't wants to go Feltz." He snickered. "Just eat ya cookies." He smiled and held up a cookie he swiped from the box then winked at Feltz and took a bite. Rain smiled as he watched the interaction between the two. He walked up to Jinx who was cooking some food over a small gas stove. Jinx looked over at Rain. "Ya like eggs yeah?" Rain nodded and looked around. "So what do we do now?" Jinx looked up and smiled then looked back at the eggs he was cooking. "We do whatever we want. Just don't drop any bodies you don't have to." He said as he flipped the eggs. "But what's the point? Like what do we do all this for?" He asked. "To live. We do this to live freely. Yous lost your family. So did we. But now yous is here and yous has a new family." Jinx smiled and put eggs on a plate. "We gots forks inat drawer o'er there." He said handing the plate to Rain and pointing. Rain smiled as he thought about what Maron said to him the other night. 'Welcome home.' I never thought I'd have a home again. He smiled and grabbed a fork before going into the other room where everyone else had found some food and went to go eat. Even the girls had got up and came in. He saw Cat and Sadie sitting over by the corner chatting casually and Halt teasing Feltz a bit more. He smiled as he looked at them and voice came from behind. "I see Jinx made ya some eggs." He heard her voice and turned around to see Maron. "Yeah. What are you eating?" He asked and she smirked at him. "Already ate. We got up about an hour ago and made food. You boys sleep in too much." She winked at him and laughed a bit. "But you should thank Jinx for the eggs even if you don't like them he hardly ever cooks for anyone but himself." He smiled and thought back to his morning and chuckled a bit. 'Yeah I'm the one who slept in.' He thought and she looked over to see Cat and Sadie in the corner talking in hushed tones and rolled her eyes. "Anyway I gotta go." She walked over to the two girls. He took a deep breath and sat down in an empty corner and ate his breakfast. The rest of the morning passed quickly as he watched the people around him. He would disappear from time to time to train. A few hours later Coin came up to Rain and told him Jinx wanted him to teach Rain to pickpocket. Rain grimaced. He still didn't like the thought of stealing from people but he chose to stay here, so. "Ok." He said nodding his head. A few hours into it and Rain picked up on how to distract someone and get his hand in their pocket. "Doing good but still something else ya need ta learn." Coin said smiling. He was impressed at how well Rain learned. "What's that?" Rain looked up. "What ta take." He smirked. Ya don't wanna grab anything bulky. But ya gotta learn how ta just incase. Ya may need ta lift a blade as well as coin." Rain nodded and listened to Coin. After a little bit Coin said he was ready to try it out in the markets. Jinx came in to check up on everything and smiled at Rain. "How's he?" He asked. "Ready for the markets once the coppers call off they search." Coin said honestly. "Well that's good for today then but keep at it tomorrow. Rain come wit me." He said turning around not waiting for a reply as he walked out. Rain caught up to him and followed behind him. "How do you like it here?" Jinx asked as they walked through hallways. Rain thought about it for a moment. "It's nice here." Jinx looked back at him. "Yeah?" He smiled. "Glad you think so. This place is Vice thirteen. It's one of our safe spots in tha city. You'll learn all of them with a bit of time." Rain looked over the decrepit hallways as they passed through them. "How many places are there around here?" He was filled with curiosity. "Don't yous worry about it. You'll find out soon enough." Jinx replied with a wink.
