Kai wakes up the next morning. He gets out of bed and walks downstairs. Kai starts making breakfast. Once he is almost done with breakfast Max comes out of the basement.
Kai: Why do you even have a house?
Max: Storage.
Kai: Fair enough.
Kai sets down a plate. Max grabs the plate.
Max: Today is the day we take down Jackal-
Kai: Today is the day Remi scouts out Jackal.
Max: Um, what?
Kai: The cops took my staff and phone off me when they were moving me to Alcatraz. I need to get it back.
Max: You're going to break into the police department for this? Why not just buy a new staff and phone?
Kai: That isn't any old staff. Not only is it vastly more durable than any other staff. It has sentimental value, and I need my phone's contacts.
Max: I think it's a stupid idea.
Kai: That's why Remi isn't helping me with it. We were going to need to scout out Jackal's base anyway. It's two things done at once, and Remi gets experience in the field.
Max: I guess you're right.
Kai takes a bite of food.
Kai: I'm always right. When Remi comes over, tell her what's going down.
Max: Yeah, yeah.
Kai: Oh, I'm also taking the spare phone. Give Remi the number.
Max: Fine.
Max walks back downstairs into the basement. Kai goes upstairs and puts his suit on again. Kai goes outside. He starts running across the city from the rooftops. Remi knocks on the door, and then walks inside Kai's house.
Remi: Kai! Max!
Max comes up from the basement.
Remi: Where's Kai?
Max: He decided he didn't want to hang out with you today.
Remi: What?
Max: I'm kidding. He is just doing something else.
Remi: And what is more important than taking down the faction that has control over manhattan?
Max: Getting his staff and phone by breaking into the police department.
Remi puts her hand to her face annoyed.
Remi: Wouldn't he want my help with that?
Max: He's a big boy. He can handle it himself. He needs you, however, to scout Jackal's base. Wherever that might be.
Remi: Do we have any idea where it is?
Max: Good news!
Remi: What?
Max: We have no idea where she is yet.
Remi: Isn't that bad news?
Max: The good news is I get to see you mad.
Remi: Max.
Max: Yes.
Remi: Find the fucking base!
Max: Follow me to my room!
They both walk down into the basement.
Remi: I'm not here too often, but I can see that you spend most of your time down here.
Remi looks over at the computer. On the floor is empty water bottles and soda cans with empty snack bags.
Max: How can you tell?
Max sits on the chair and starts typing.
Remi: What are you doing?
Max: Working.
Remi: Care to explain?
Max: If I must. I'm looking at all the security camera footage to try to find the pattern of how the wolves move about the city. If I can find where they start, and where they go before the end of the night I can find their location.
Remi: I'll leave you to it then.
Max: Just go work out somewhere. Keep your strength up for fights.
Remi laughs
Remi: Will do boss.
Max: Don't be mad that you don't have gifted intelligence like me.
Remi: You said stupid wrong.
Max: You're so salty you could turn fresh water into an ocean.
Remi: Um, what?
Max: You heard me!
Remi walks up the stairs. She starts training outside. Soon it becomes lunch time. Kai has been scouting each police department. He found nothing. He is looking for the building that the police that captured him are in. Kai is running along rooftops. It's around lunch time. Then Kai sees the cops that took him in. They are walking to their car.
Ryan: Owen, did you hear there was a breakout at Alcatraz?
Owen: Who broke out?
Ryan: They didn't say. All it said was someone broke out. Actually it was two people.
Owen: Ryan, you're useless. I would like to know who broke out so that we can prepare for a Mutant attack.
They both get in the car. Soon the car starts driving away.
Kai: Ryan and Owen.
Kai starts following the car. As Kai is following the car he gets a call on his spare phone. He takes out his phone, and answers the call while he is running.
Kai: Hello?
Remi: Kai, you said you got a lot stronger. How?
Kai: Um, well.
The police car takes a turn. Kai has to jump across a street. He jumps over a street onto other buildings.
Remi: What was that.
Kai: Nothing. Do rapids. Just keep doing push ups or whatever exercise until your body physically can't do them anymore. Then meditate and repeat. I call it the Stick strategy.
Remi: Why?
Kai: I'll explain later. Just do it.
Kai follows the cop car. The car parks at a police station. Kai watch the two cops walk inside.
Kai: Now time to scout the building. See how I am going to get in, and wait for it to get a bit darker. I don't want to be seen breaking into a police station.
Remi is doing as Kai said. She looks tired. She does one last pushup and falls over. She barely pulls herself up then starts meditating. She starts to feel better and walks inside. She walks down into the basement.
Max: Remi, you're right on time.
Remi: For?
Max: I figured out their location.
Remi: Where are they?
The computer zooms in on the location.
Max: It's a bar.
Remi: Not just any bar. The old bar that I was trapped in.
Max: Oh yeah. It is, isn't it? You better go quickly. If your there by the time that the sun starts setting it'll be a stampede.
Remi: Your right. I'll be back.
Max: You are going to try on the new suit?
Remi: I'm still putting on the finishing touches. I think I'll just go into something that can hide who I am.
Max: Suit yourself.
Remi puts on a sweatshirt and heads out. She runs across the buildings. Sometimes tripping and almost falling when jumping across rooftops.
Remi: This is harder than it looks.
Remi runs to the bar. She is on the top of a building looking down at the bar.
Remi: Just like before there are no windows or vents. There is just one door. If I go in they'll know someone is after them, but what if I wait until the wolves come out?
It's starting to get dark and Kai has come up with a plan. Kai is on the top of the police department. He quietly pulls a vent latch off of the roof. He sneaks inside. The vent leads him into a room. He is in the lab. Kai pokes his head out. He sees someone. They walk by, and Kai sneaks around the corner. Kai walks into the storage. He starts looking around for his stuff, but isn't having good luck.
Owen: You are looking for this?
Owen is holding Kai's phone and staff in one hand. In the other is a gun pointed at Kai. Kai puts his hands up.
Owen: You really want to go back to Alcatraz that bad? I saw you on the rooftops. You were following my partner and I.
Kai:...
Owen: You have nothing to say? Good I have something to keep the conversation rolling then.
Owen puts out his hand with the staff and phone.
Owen: Take it.
Kai grabs his stuff. He hooks his staff on his belt, and puts his phone in his pocket.
Kai: Why?
Owen: The city needs you. I didn't realize you were the one thing W.A.T.K.H was looking out for.
Kai: Me?
Owen: No one else had their eye on them. That's why they gave us the tip to capture you. Then once you were gone they started paying off the police. Now I can't attack them without risking my job. Once that happened I thought back to a thing a friend once said to me. She asked me "how I could live with myself knowing that my job is a lie." That phrase just kept repeating in my mind. Once I asked myself I realized that fear had controlled me. I didn't want to die on the streets from a Mutant so bad that I just stopped being a cop. That's what's happening to all the cops. That's why I wanted to help you. The cops can't do anything anymore. It's time for other heroes to stand up.
Kai: Thank you. I'll try my best. Maybe you could even help me out someday. Do anything you can to help Owen. If we don't stop what's happening now then these Mutant rulers just might start spreading their territories.
Owen: I will.
Kai leaves. Remi is waiting at the building. When she starts seeing wolves she ducks. She sees wolves coming from the back of the building.
Remi: What's back there.
The wolves are growling and snarling. Some of the wolves howl.
Wolf: C-can you smell that.
Wolf2: It's a girl. A girl watching us. Wonder if she wants to say hi.
Wolf: Why don't we ask her?
The wolves run at the building. They jump to the top of the building, but no one is there.
Wolf: I-I must have been smelling things.
Wolf2: Get your nose checked.
Wolf: You smelt it too!
Kai walks inside. He sees Remi on the couch. Kai sits on the couch next to Remi.
Kai: How was your day?
Remi: I realized how hard jumping from building to building is.
Kai: You'll get use to it. I've only been doing it for, um, like ten years.
Remi: What?!
Kai: I think the first time was when I was fourteen. That was when we were chasing detective steel, and now I'm twenty five. Wait, that eleven years.
Remi: No wonder I'm behind.
Kai: Don't feel bad. I've been doing everything my whole life. I started my training at like 12 or 13. I've really grown over the years too. I used to be way weaker than I am now. Way weaker than I was before I went to prison.
Remi: I better go.
Kai: I can cook dinner if you want.
Remi: No thank you. I have something at home. Maybe some other time.
Kai: Sure. I thought I might as well ask you because the monster under my house yells at me if I don't make dinner.
Remi: Is that what you call him now?
Kai: That's what he is.
Remi: Goodnight Kai.
Kai: Night.
Remi leaves. Kai opens up his phone. He called the President. The phone is picked up.
Kai: Hey, it's Kai. I have a question for you.
