Chapter 1 - The Fox and The Raven

Silently I ran down the empty streets. God, why did Raven have to go and ruin it again? Frustrated, I shook my head. Moron! Nimbly I skipped over some crates onto the roof. With natural ease I ran over the rooftops, my black leather boots clacking on the bricks. I smelt the air. Where was he? Did he take route C instead? Growling I kept running. If it weren't for my current situation, I'd sit down now and watch the beautiful night sky slowly creep over Paris, giving the lively city an enchanting look. With a mighty leap, I jumped over the main street, landing on the other roof with a roll. I nearly tripped over my own tail. How embarrassing! My hood fell to my shoulders, revealing my fox red hair. Crap! Quickly I pulled my hood back up, covering my face. Well, not that it really mattered now. I was wearing my mask. Without further ado, I ran on the rooftops for a few more blocks before I jumped down onto the street below. I stopped for a second there, checking if the coast was clear.

I took fast, shallow breaths, the mask making it difficult for me to breathe. After catching my breath, I walked on more slowly. As soon as my heartbeat slowed down to a more human rate, I dug out my headphones from my jacket and slung them around my neck. I was so thankful for my comfortable clothes. I cracked my neck and hands, stretched my legs, pulled up my headphones and disappeared out into the bustling streets of Paris.

I didn't get any too obvious stares, but I could feel stranger eyes lingering on just a bit longer than usual. Ignoring them, I made my way down the beautifully decorated road. It had trees growing by the road, little Cafés and shops on either side. It was the romantic atmosphere that kept pulling me back to this place. The feeling of comfort and warmth washed over me every time I came here. It was less hectic here than in the main city center, it smelled better and had an overall comforting vibe.

The further I distanced myself from the old town, the more solar generators I could see on the roof tops. Trains didn't go into the old town to help preserve it. But out here they zoomed back and forth over the city. The roads were surrounded by automatic sidewalks. There was free wifi everywhere and the roads were lit and you could buy electronic gadgets at every corner. Shoulders sunken, I strolled into my favorite Café in town. It was packed with people, but when the bar tender saw me, he gave me a friendly wave and started making my usual tea. "No no." I waved him off. "I'll be taking a coffee today." He smiled and did as I asked for.

"What the hell were you thinking you stuck up idiot?? You could have gotten us caught!" Furious, I hurtled an empty cup of coffee at Raven, who was lazily hanging on the sofa in our makeshift apartment in an old abandoned house. He had long jet black hair, calculating blue eyes and the most annoying yet dazzling smile. The Creator had a keen sense for perfection. Therefore every single one of his creations was perfect. But that is always relative I'd say.

"Do you want to be caught? Because it sure as hell looks like it!" My cheeks were burning.

Raven caught my cup with ease and slurped up the last of the brown brew. He turned and looked at the cup with fake interest. "And here I was, believing all these years you didn't even like coffee. You always manage to surprise me." I was at loss of words. How could he just brush this off like it was nothing? I really wished I had a brick with me to throw at him next. In reality, I'm sure he felt really sorry, but his pride didn't allow him to admit it. I still wasn't going to let this off the hook so easily. "I'm being serious over here! Stop ignoring me!" Crossing my arms, I stomped my foot to get his attention. He could at least look at me! Calmly he stood up, walked over, handed me the cup, patted my head and said: "You're so cute when you pout like that." He smiled at me.

Wh- Did he just- I felt my anger rise up in me. "Aaaargh!" I swung at him with all my might. "Diiiee!" Laughing he caught my hand. "Aww is the little fox throwing a tantrum?" He grinned at me. Okay, that was enough! No matter how much I like you, that's enough! Baring my teeth I ripped my hand free from his grip. "Go to hell for all I care!" I snarled at him. Angrily I stormed out of the room, slamming the door so hard behind me I spooked myself, making myself jump away with a start. This made me even more aggravated. I knew that the way I was worked up now, the only thing that would help was a long walk. Sighing, I turned on my music, pulled up my hoodie and slipped out into the night a second time.

Lost in my music, I hardly realized where I was walking. Before I knew it, I was standing in front of the Notre-Dame. It was about one thirty am, therefore there wasn't a single soul in sight. Mindlessly I spaced around the entrance for a while, debating what to do next. What a mess this was. I pulled out a bag of cookies I had stolen earlier and started chowing down. Omg she's a thief! Got a problem with that? Well too bad. It's not like I had any other choice. Abnormals like me always ended up like this. Or dead. One of the two.

One major difference between the Abnormals and humans were the physical abilities an Abnormal had. Overall an Abnormal was much faster, stronger, had much more stamina and got injured more rarely. We healed faster and could go longer without food or water. In addition to that, depending on what the creator specifically had in mind for you, you were extra strong in one of these abilities. We were like super-humans. No wonder the humans hated the Abnormals. An army of us could easily wipe out the humans. But we would never do something like that. All we wanted is to live in peace and quiet. It's the humans who wanted to use us.
