Chapter 23 - The Disciple

"Are you planning on making her your disciple, or are you actually planning on making her your sparring partner?" Leo teased.

Lyra smacked Leo's shoulder. "Where did you get that idea? She is my new disciple; I will treat her well and teach her."

"All right, Lyra. But how are you going to hide this from Len? Ace and Beatrice also?"

Lyra thought for a moment, but then she decided. "You give us extra lessons. Ace and Beatrice already know that I am strong, but they don't know how strong. I could use the private lessons as an excuse."

Leo nodded. "That sounds reasonable. But I must say, you are acting very different from your usual self."

"Hahaha... maybe I'm just getting old. You know, I want to pass down my skills to the future generations. Then they won't be lost."

"But you are here now. Besides, you are young, and you have a long time to live."

"I'm not as young as I seem. You know this as well as I do."

"You really have changed. If not for your appearance, I would not have recognized you."

Lyra smiled. "That's good then. I won't have to worry about Len finding out the truth."

Leo shook his head. "You changed so much..."

***

"You didn't change at all!" Leo shouted.

They were at Laura's first lesson with Lyra, and Leo was keeping guard to make sure that Len did not come suddenly. However, he was completely stunned by the training that he was seeing.

Lyra was standing completely still, and she asked Laura to come at her and attack. Laura nodded, since she knew that Lyra was strong. There was nothing for her to worry about in attacking, so she attacked with her strongest move first. She attacked with a fireball that was filled with explosive power

Lyra smiled when she saw the attack coming, and she did not move as the fireball came closer. Until the fireball was only an inch away, she did not move.

Then, she switched her finger, and the fireball vanished, as if it had never existed.

The corner of Leo's mouth twitched. A single twitch of Lyra's finger was enough to dispel Laura's strongest attack. Lyra was as strong as ever.

Laura attacked again, and this time she used another fireball. Instead of making it disappear like she did last time, Lyra made an identical fireball and used it to attack Laura's fireball.

However, when Lyra's fireball hit Laura's, it ate it.

Laura's mouth opened wide. "How did you do that!?"

Lyra smiled and walked over to stand in front of Laura. "It seems you have much to learn."

"Will you teach me?" Laura asked.

"I already said that I would."

"So.... how did you do that?"

Lyra did not answer Laura's question. "You made seven different major mistakes that you really need to fix, a few others, and many minor ones."

Laura tilted her head. She knew that she could not beat Lyra, but she felt that her attacks were at least decent.

Lyra continued, "first, you should judge the person you are fighting. Since you know that I am stronger than you, you should have come up with something unexpected, rather than an ordinary fireball. Second, you should not have used an attack with such a limited area of effect. If I had stepped to either side, it would have completely missed me and hit the wall behind me. It would have been better to use an attack that hits the surrounding area; those are more unpredictable, and they are harder to dodge. Third, you should not have used your full power in the first attack. It made your second attack much weaker. That leads to my fourth point, as you should not have repeated the same attack immediately after. Fifth, you should not have waited for your first attack to finish before starting your second attack."

Laura thought about it for a moment, and then she asked, "what about the sixth and seventh major mistakes? You said that there were seven."

Lyra smiled. "You forgot that I could easily attack you at any time. You did not put any defenses up, and you did not move around. And finally, you should have held onto the control of your attack the entire time. You should not have allowed the fireball to head straight in a single direction, but forced it to move in a strange pattern."

Laura thanked Lyra, and completely forgot about the fact that Lyra only said seven major mistakes, but mentioned that there were more. Laura had a lot to learn, and Lyra was too lazy to tell her everything. Laura would not have immediately been able to fix all of the mistakes in one go anyways, and need more time to fix just those seven mistakes, let alone all the others.
