Chapter 9 - An Endless Tussle, a Never-Ending Fight

Aadam set off, raring to finally embrace his new life of adventure, ready to fight whatever those Keeluts are or whatever. Following the map given to him by the kindly Marianne, he weaved through the twists and turns of Greymerrow, eventually arriving at the Graveyard, home to those long gone, and maybe those who haven't yet to truly depart.

Arriving at the Greymerrow Graveyard, one would see an eerie sight, one that would put fear into the heart of the common man. Black avian creatures perched on the few and sparse trees, screeching ungodly amounts of noise into the atmosphere, as if to reassure themselves of their own existence through the use of sound.

A short wall surrounded the borders of the Graveyard. Approaching it, locals would know that it was there to keep the monsters in, rather than keep truants out. A patrol of guards circled around, warily, nervously eyeing the accursed place.

Aadam approached the guards, "Excuse me the-. " The guard he had initially approached had whirled around, swinging his spear in his direction".

"Ah shit! Whoa calm down there!"

Startled at Aadam's appearance, he moved to apologize, "My apologies. We got unlucky today. Got assigned to patrol this lot. There's just something wrong about this place, you know? Well, what you here for?"

"It's fine. That's all in the past. Well, I'm here to help curb the Keeluts," Aadam stated.

Doing a double-take, "You sure kid? Who you piss off?"

"Wait what do you mean? I didn't piss off anyone! Not that I know of at least."

"How do you not know? Look kid, I'm going to be frank with you here," he paused "I don't how else to say this but, you're pretty dumb. You just essentially volunteered to trek off somewhere without a clear idea of what the hell you were supposed to do!"

"Okay, in hindsight... what I did was dumb but, I'm sure I'll be fine, right?" said Aadam, reassuring himself.

"Look kid, you're dumb. You're too young to die. Just go home."

"Look man. I don't know what's wrong but, I said that I'll do the mission," interjected Aadam.

"Kid, promises and shit are exactly that, shit. Grow up. Life's tough. You wanna know what's in there so badly huh? It's the goddamn shit of your fucking nightmares. Any sane person who walks in, they ain't sane. You aren't ready for this job kid. Trust me. Train a little, and by that I mean a metric crap load, and then come back when you're like thirty or something."

"Come on! Just let me in already!" cried Aadam.

Seeing the commotion another guard walked over.

"What's going on here Bixby"?

"Nothing much. It's just another kid trying to do the that Keelt shit again."

"Ah. I see. Word of advice kid. Turn back now. While you still got the legs to do so."

Aadam tried again "Come on. I need to get in there! Come on, if I'm not prepared then you can give some info or something?"

Rubbing the bridge of his nose in frustration, Bixby then said "Look kid. It appears to me that you don't know the situation here. Did you really think that you just go in there swinging your sword like a dumbass and walk away with 40 something silver? Nah, kid. The Keeluts aren't the only thing you gotta worry bout. They got these Hellhounds, Zombies, Ghouls, Wraiths, and these most infernal damn witches. Call themselves Witnesses of the Void. You know?" seeing Aadam shake his head, he continued, "Of course you don't know, what do you know?" seeing Aadam about to respond, he said "Shut up, okay? That was a rhetorical question. "Goddamn it. Pretty much all of the things I mentioned will probably, okay, will kill you. The only reasons you got that mission is because, A) You pissed off someone you shouldn't have, or B) You're a dumbass, there is literally nothing else that comes to mind. There is literally no possibility of it being choice given that I can't possibly imagine someone going through the trouble of actually sending you here."

"Okay, I'm a dumbass but, I'm a dumbass who's going to do what he said he'll do. Wheter you like it or not. I'm going to get in there. I will kill those Keeluts. I don't care if I have to sneak in or something, but I will accomplish what I said I would."

The other guard, Farhan, interrupted the argument, "Bixby, look. If he wants to lay down his life, just let him. Who knows maybe this dumbass will kill a couple of them. Make our job a little easier eh?"

"You know what? Screw it!" he turned to Aadam, "You wanna throw away your life that'son you. Don't go haunting more or some bullshit because I warned you."

"Thank you so much! I swear I'll be back! Thank you so much!"

Bixby and Farhan went stepped aside, allowing for Aadam to pass through unobstructed. When suddenly he was stopped by Bixby grabbing his wrist.

"Look kid, I think you're a dumbass but at least take this map. Maybe it'll help you out or something."

Aadam received the map, unfurling it's contents, revealing a carefully drawn out map of the Graveyard, various details inscribed on the scroll explaining different settlements of the creatures within.

Nodding his head in respect, "Thanks, I mean it" gratefully accepting the aid provided.

"No problem, try to stay alive."

"I will. He turned off again heading out towards the depressing gates of the Graveyard, a foreboding cry of ravens circled overhead, spelling out ill omens for those who entered.
