Chapter 29 - The Aftermath- Chapter 28

I picked nervously at my fingers, waiting at the bus stop. Of course my weekends were always hectic, it seemed to be a common occurrence.

Finally, the bus pulled up in front of me, it's signature white color made my stomach crawl with nervousness. I couldn't imagine what today would be like.

Getting on board, I took my usual seat in the back, staring out the window.

"I hoped no one came by while I was gone" I thought. My mind ran back to the crazy old man, causing me to gulp.

The bus took off, driving fast as it left the shoreline, trees getting taller as the scenery passed us.

I took a breath, after mumbling a silent prayer I put my headphones in, resting my head against the window.

I was too anxious about today to sleep well. My eyes felt heavy as the bus drove on.

Slowly, they closed, I fell fast asleep.

Fingers tapped my shoulder softly. Shocked, my eyes shot open. I quickly looked to my side.

"Hey." Anne said. My heartbeat quickened.

Embarrassed, I quickly sat up, rubbing my eyes.

"S-Sorry. I must have fallen asleep.."

A flash of pity made its way across her face. She nodded.

"That's fine. We're at the school now though."

"Oh!" My eyes widened, I quickly grabbed my bag.

"R-Right. Sorry."

I stood, Anne walking off the bus before me.

When my feet touched the ground, I saw that she was still waiting for me.

"So, which class do you have first."

"W-What?" My eyes widened. Was she talking to me?

"O-Oh! Right, right. I think I have-"

"-Biology. With me." A familiar voice interrupted.

I looked to my side to see Maddie, staring hard at Anne.

"O-Oh. I didn't know you were coming to school earl-"

"-I wasn't asking you. Somnium, let me walk you to class."

My eyes bulged even harder.

"W-What??"

Maddie grabbed my arm. For some reason, a protective expression made its way onto her face. I gulped.

"So… seems like these two have history…" I thought to myself.

Anne's eyes narrowed, her jaw clenched. The two of them just glared daggers at each other. The thick tension enough to kill a man.

Finally, Anne looked back at me, a small smile on her face.

"I'll see you later, Somnium."

Stunned, I quickly nodded.

"I- Okay… see you.."

Maddie's grip on my arm hardened, only softening after Anne left.

I glanced at her with a raised brow.

"What was that?"

She pulled her hand away, scoffing.

"To think that that chick would go at you to get back at me… Tch."

"Huh? Do you guys have problems?"

She only brushed back her hair with another frustrated sigh.

"Anne is… my ex-girlfriend."

"….."

A laugh left my lips.

"Hey, I'm serious. Can you tell me the real reason?"

Maddie remained quiet. Her silence made my eyes go wide.

"Wait.. are you… are you being serious???"

Maddie, sighed, nodding.

"It was two years ago. And we haven't talked since so.."

"!!!!!"

My face burned red hearing her confirmation. I looked back at Anne's figure that walked father away. Disbelief filling my face.

"You- you and her? Really? Dated?!!?"

I couldn't believe it.

Of course, they were both attractive people. And sure, with their family backgrounds and personalities, perhaps they'd make a good couple, but-

The more I thought about it, the more my brain started to hurt. In actuality, Maddie and Anne seemed like a match made in heaven.

Growing curious, I looked up at Maddie.

"Why did you to break up?"

She looked at me, I saw a vein bulge on her forehead. Subconsciously, I gulped.

"Did you… just ask me why-"

The bell rung, snapping me from my thoughts. I looked at Maddie.

"We're gonna be late!! Hurry!"

As if still processing my question, she stared at me.

"Maddie!"

She finally nodded.

"Right."
