Chereads / Zyne: The High-Rule [Book 1] / Chapter 11 - Green

Chapter 11 - Green

In the bed Zyne laid, snuggled against Keanu. Zyne reached over to hold Keanu's hand. Softly, Zyne breathed, his eyes closed.

Keanu sat up, hanging his legs over the edge of the bed. There he remained for some time, in thought. To his wardrobe he sauntered, where he proceeded to load one of his guns.

Zyne rolled out of bed. He hugged Keanu from behind, resting his chin on Keanu's shoulder. Keanu smiled.

"Coffee?"

"Mm, coffee sounds good."

He approached the kitchen, walking through the hallway that extended from Keanu's room.

A blade pierced his chest.

Forcefully, the weapon was yanked out from Zyne's back. He whipped around to face the assailant, but no one was there.

He ran to the living room, curving a left to the front door. Shadows clouded his vision. He grasped the doorframe as he teetered.

"...Zyne? Baby?"

A dagger cut into his back. He fell forward, sliding out of the weapon.

Zyne hit the ground with a thud. He sputtered, coughing up blood. He looked up at the sky, setting his gaze upon the setting sun. The world faded from his grasp. Slowly, it grew quiet.

The firing of a gun boomed. The dog barked wildly.

"Baby?!"

Keanu appeared before him, kneeling down next to Zyne. He lifted Zyne, elevating him. He held Zyne. Zyne smiled, his eyes closing. He rested his hand on Keanu's cheek.

"Don't cry, love."

"Baby, stay with me," Keanu sobbed.

Zyne fell limp in his arms.

For awhile, Keanu simply sat there, crying into Zyne's chest.

Keanu staggered to stand, his vision blurred from his tears.

He stumbled upon the killer's body, sprawled out against his living room floor. Like an uncanny ritual, the woman losing her shape, she became a bubbling, black goo until it evaporated into a purple-black gas-like substance.

He calmed his dog. For what felt like years, he sat on his bed, thinking.

He dialed his friend's number.

Ring ring. Ring ring. Ring ring. Ring ring.

No answer.

He'd have to deal with it himself.

He gathered himself; he headed outside.

Zyne was gone.
