Chapter 8 - Meanwhile...

Roy was beginning to panic. It was pouring rain and barely dawn when he had given up on sleeping and rolled out of bed to check the perimeter of the property. Lady had surely reinforced the wards last night, so there was no real rush- but another minute staring at the door that little temptress had come through would have broken him. So, with much grumbling Roy had just pulled on some jeans and a t-shirt when he realized that something was missing...

F***!!! He frantically felt his chest where the key's familiar weight had always hung, but it was gone. The next several minutes consisted of Roy tearing apart his room, smacking himself in the face and yelling into a pillow. Perhaps...it was lost in the field last night?? He did have quite a tussle with Kirina... Kirina. Her name resonated in his mind like a bell and snapped him out of his panic. He would retrace his steps from last night and probably find it near the ravine. If it wasn't there, he would then have an excuse to seek out Kirina again interrogate her! Oh yes, that sounded good. With a plan decided on, he determinedly pulled on his boots and trudged out into the rain.

Several hours later, Roy had lapped the nine-acre property nearly four times and his nose was running like a faucet. He finally felt tired and miserable enough to head back to the house empty handed, and therefore was not paying much attention to his surroundings as he passed in front of the house. The sudden explosion above him took a second too long to register and Roy looked up to see a cloud of colored glass shards with Kirina as the nucleus hurtling down from the third floor. From directly below, she looked frozen in time. Her face was a mask of horror and her hair flew out in all directions as she fell. With little time for thought Roy centered himself below her and held out his arms hoping to at the very least cushion the fall.

The answers to what the hell she was doing up there, and how she got to the third floor would have to be addressed if the both of them survived, but in the moment all Roy could do was wait for impact.

It never came.

Roy stood with his arms out like a fool for several minutes before realizing what had happened. Instead of wasting time searching the property, he should've gone straight for Kirina. That little thief had stolen his key. In a funny mix of relief and frustration he squinted up at the portal. Having only been glamoured to appear as a window, it had already completely reformed like nothing had happened. He stood there for several more minutes, staring upwards as the rain splattered against his face and panic welled up inside of him like a sinking ship.
