Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Priorities

How long are we going to stay like this? I glanced over at Eva as she pulled hay and other supplies into the wagon; We hadn't spoken in what felt like forever.

I was giving water to the oxen when I over heard a conversation between 2 villagers.

" Do you think the rumors are true?" Said one orange haired man.

" It's gotta be. I heard it from my friend Tomas; who heard it straight from an adventurer." I shook my head at their gossiping. If they had time to stand there and chat they could be doing something productive for this village.

"Yeah the Vampire Scourge. I heard it murders man and monsters alike." That caught my attention and I listened closer. A Vampire that didn't discriminate between man and monster wasn't unheard of but to go as far as being known for it was another matter; That means the level of brutality was worth noting.

"That's if it's real. I mean it just came out of thin air." One of them said dismissively. He had a point; I had never heard of this Vampire Scourge before today. Was it from a dungeon?

" Yeah but I heard that it slaughtered all the monsters that were meant to be cleared by a team of class B adventurers. They said, when they arrived the scene was a bloody mess; it killed 2 of their teammates and then fled." I contemplated their words as I hooked the oxen back to the wagon.

"You ready to go?" I was so lost In thought it took me a moment to realize Eva was talking to me; I nodded loathing the fact I didn't reply back immediately. After some time passed the sun began to set and we made camp.

"So the shop keeper in the store back there warned me that there was some freak vampire on the loose..." I looked up quickly from the campfire that was currently roasting our food.

Was she scared?

"Don't worry. I won't let any man or beast hurt you." If they even dared to I'd break them; The sudden jolt of violence I felt at the thought of some other man touching Eva shook me. I didn't show it on my face but it was then I realized my feelings for Eva must have taken a turn. When did my intrigue and want for justice turn into passion?

"No I- I was just thinking. " I eyed her curiously; She had been acting weird for a while now; What was on her mind?

"Eva talk to me; As a friend I am worried about you." She said I'd hate her or something for her thoughts; it was cute how much she wanted me around but at the same time it bothered me she'd hide herself away like that. I wanted to be closer to her.

"I know; but what you don't know can't hurt you right?" She said it casually with a smile but It did nothing to improve my now very sour mood; Grimly I said

" I am a living witness to how wrong that line of thinking is." My voice was flat as I chastised her.

" It should be ' what you don't know can hurt you and those dumb enough to stand next to you.' I've been hurt by and from many things I didn't know about. Some of them I still don't understand. Just tell me what is bothering you." I said exasperated; Whatever it was it couldn't be worth all this trouble. Eva opened then closed her mouth several times; the look on her face was a mix of anxiety and doubt.

" I realized something terrible about myself recently; I don't want to disgust you and cause you to hate me so I hid it from you." She paused then with a deep shaky breathe continued.

"What I realized is I don't want Amos to lose interest in me, and that I like being dominated by..." She trailed off turning away from me. The first part shocked me momentarily; she didn't want that evil thing to lose interest?! Why?! How disgusting, vampires were one step away from being as dead as ghouls; Not to mention this would be a major issue if she began to seek the damn thing out; And finally who did she like being dominated by?!

I got to my feet and moved too stand in front of her; Leaning down I invaded her personal space. I grabbed her by her chin and forced her to face me;

" Who? Who is it?!" I clinched my teeth in restraint; If I held onto her any tighter she'd be bruised. Somehow her whole Interest in That vampire did little to quench my passion. That thing had marked her body as his to the point she couldn't forget him! that fact made me want to make her mine even more. Conquest, that was the word; the want to take complete control. I thought I killed this habit...

The words slipped out of my mouth smoothly, a grin played on my face as I began to tower over Eva.

"Shall I erase that vampire's touch from you after all?" Eva's lips parted slightly and I pulled her into a kiss. It was so tempting, too tempting even when she did that. I know Eva said we couldn't do this but the fact her body was made slave to that loathsome creature's touch made my blood boil. Being mine in body was far better even if she didn't want that kind of physical relationship with me. The excuses came to mind easily after that thought; everyone of them justifying my actions. I placed Eva quickly on the ground; She protested trying to push me away; but I didn't give her enough time to speak; I captured her mouth once more and began to remove her clothes. The night air was cool in the shade of the trees and I felt her shiver beneath me. I removed my lower armor and pants as I hoisted her up in my arms; I wouldn't give her a single chance to deny or defy me. I held head, forcing her lips to mine as I began to rub my cock against her vagina; Her mouth opened as she gasped and I took the opportunity to delve into it with my tongue. From her smooth skin to her sweet moans; everything seemed to stir a primal hunger in me. Just as I began to prod at her entrance a familiar falcon came into view. I begrudgingly tore myself from Eva who was panting hard; And placed her in the wagon gently. I went to see what the falcon had to deliver; It was from my wives. Impeccable timing as always; It read

- Hello my dearest,

We miss you; Angela and myself were getting worried since you stopped writing after your letter about heading to Durum. Casey is off on another mission, Katherine is visiting her parents; it seems her mother's Illness has worsened; So it's just me and Angela at the moment. I hope everything is going ok; When Casey returns we will definitely come see you.

With Love

Ophelia-

A deep seeded guilt suddenly hit me and I felt ill. What was I doing? Playing around with women and neglecting my wives wasn't like me at all; I scowled in self disappointment at the discarded armor on the ground before picking it up and wearing it. I grabbed a piece of paper from my satchel In front of the wagon; And wrote a short letter detailing our location and apologized for not writing, I felt even worse omitting my partial affair with Eva; after ending with a tender 'I love you' I sent the Falcon away. Feeling more clear of mind I removed the slightly burnt roasts from the fire and called to Eva.

" Eva come out, dinner is ready." She peeked her head out of the back of the wagon and I felt my heart clench; she was so cute, like a rabbit. She had redressed into her mages robes; her mana blue eyes shimmered like jewels by the fire, her long luscious white hair looked delicate and her dark skin looked full of life as it seemed to glow in the fire light. I wanted nothing more than to snatch her up and proceed where we left off but I knew It was wrong. She didn't want what I had to offer; and suddenly I felt jealous of the vampire. He was a monster that should be vanquished but he was also likely single and seeming too pursue Eva seriously. Even if it was gross and blasphemous he could still at least pursue her.

We sat there eating in silence; I had to say that night sleeping was the hardest thing I had experienced in some time.
