Chapter 4 - Humble Beginnings

Legeron walked straight towards the elderly woman. "Lady Muya?" He asked in a kind and gentle tone.

"That's madam Muya young'n." She snapped back. Muya was a human woman with dark caramel skin. It was obvious that she had seen many days of hard labor under the sun. Stark white hair lay interwoven into braid down one of her shoulders. "I'm sorry boy, it's been a long day."

"That is perfectly fine." Legeron replied with a friendly smile back. He attempted to be as kind as possible. He could only imagine what a lack of charm would cause if he slipped up in the future. Possibly the lose of an important quest.

Madam Muya cussed and lightly kicked the water well. She then turned towards Legeron. "Boy would you do me a favor? I left my water bucket back at my house. Would you please go grab it for me?"

Legeron gave a slight smile. Such an easy first quest but that did not surprise him. He was still in the very beginning phase of the game and he hadn't even past lvl 0. This obviously meant that this was a tutorial to teach him how to do different tasks in the game.

"Of course madam Muya. Which house is yours?"

She wearily point back towards the woods. "It's the lone cottage by the woods. You can't miss it, the thing sticks out like a sore thumb."

There was a slight ring in the air as a prompt popped up in Legeron's view. Quest 'Humble Beginnings' updated.

Legeron gave the woman a quick smile and began jogging the direction she pointed. A few points floated in the air but a moment then faded away.

Charm +1 XP

Persuasion +2 XP

After jogging for a couple seconds he became extremely fatigued.

What the heck? He thought as more XP points crossed the screen.

Stamina +2 XP

This is going to take a while. After a short time of walking he recovered his energy and began running again. It sucked but I was the only way improve this stat. By the time he reached the outskirts of the town he reached lvl 1 stamina. The XP required for lvl 2 was 20 XP. He was already half way. Also, when he leveled the stamina he gained +5 XP to constitution. It was definitely a unique leveling system.

Passing by the last log cabin style home there was about 100 yards till the edge of the forest. At the very edge was a small cottage that looked nothing like the rest of the buildings. His perception increased by 2.

This quest was a clever way to introduce all the different aspect of the game he thought. That means he knew combat was coming up. Testing this new system of combat made Legeron excited as he began running towards the cottage once more working on his stamina.

Once he reached the cottage he immediately spotted the water bucket laying down next to the front door. However something else caught his eye. The eye of a goblin poked behind the cottage waiting for anyone to come by.

He immediately gain 5 XP towards trap detection. Once the goblin realized it had been made it jumped out of hiding. Quest 'Humble Beginnings' updated. Legeron opened up the quest panel to see the quest now stated that he must defeat the goblin. As a bonus objective he was supposed to use both quick dodge, and slash effectively.

The goblin had already closed the distance when Legeron looked back up. A sharp knife was already slashing towards his throat. It was good to note that things didn't wait around for him in this game.

He took a step backwards having the knife just cut through the air inches from his carotid artery. A flash appeared informing him he gain +1 SP for dodge. That's going to get old really quickly he thought. I'll have to disable that in the future. He drew his battle axe and squared off with the goblin.

He currently had a total of 65 HP. The lvl 1 goblin had a total of 40 HP. This was going to be a difficult battle for the first one. The monster charged him once more knife raised to imbed it in his sternum. Legeron activated quick dodge and he felt his body move by itself. Stepping to the left of the goblin he swirled by the beast as the knife passed inches from his chest.

As the creature continued to run forward he swung his massive axe down. Embedding itself in the creatures shoulder a spray of greenish blue blood erupted. -13 HP floated over the wound.

The goblin spun around with lightning speed the knife slashing through his stomach. A burst of pain exploded from his abdomen. It felt real, no it was real. 15 points quickly disappeared from his total leaving him with 50 points left.

The pain sent Legeron back on his heels, the goblin quickly took advantage embedding the dagger into his shoulder. Another eruption of pain shot through his body and another 15 points disappeared from his counter. Out of natural preservation of life Legeron kicked with all his might which sent the goblin flopping backwards. -5 HP appeared above the creature. 22 points remaining.

The dagger was left in his shoulder. Legeron reached up and ripped the blade out in a fit of rage tossing it to the side. Running at the creature he activated slash on the helpless creature. -14 appeared above its head. As he raised the battle axe to finish it off, the creature scurried between his legs finding the knife on the ground. The two squared off once more.

With a loud screech the goblin ran forward knife raised. Legeron dodged to the right swinging his blade with all his might. Two thuds hit the ground as the head was severed from body.

He breathed heavily for a minute. His body felt soar and their were still slight throbs of pain where he had gotten hit. A prompt appeared showing him a reward of 5 XP plus 5 XP for completing the bonus task. He was now level 1.

"Oracle! What the hell man!" Legeron shouted into the world.

A blue ethereal orb appeared next to Legeron. "What can I help you with?"

"Why does it feel so real?"

"One moment." The white eye turned gray. After a longer moment then normal it return back to the original white. "You currently have the pain sensitivity up to 100%."

"That's a really crappy thing to do to a brand new player."

"Normally the pain sensitively begins at zero and is able to be increased at a later time. Do not freight all you need to do is turn this down in the options tab in the personal menu."

"There is no options menu in the personal menu."

"Yes there is."

"No there isn't." Thomas opened up the personal panel and showed the ethereal ball. "Look I only have 4 tabs. None of them say options."

"Please wait." The eye turned gray once more. He remained this way for a long time. During this time he assigned his 3 new ability points he received from leveling to perception, charm, and another to strength.

Also during this time Legeron collect the loot dropped by the goblin who had already vanished. The creature dropped a bag that had six item slots and 2 copper pieces or cp. he collected the water bucket and attempted to put it in the pouch. He got a error message saying that the item was too large for this pouch.

In a moment of frustration he gave out a laugh. They really are making this game as realistic as possible.

The blue ethereal orb flew towards him. "It appears that this is a glitch occurring between the After Life program and Ig'Dracil. We will work on this problem so you won't experience this in the future. If you no longer wish to play the game just saying Home Base and you will return to your room."

"I'm fine for right now Oracle. Thank you for working on it."

After the orb faded Thomas began thinking. Glitch within this new world? What other glitches cloud there be?

He proceeded to return to madam Muya. "Oh thank you boy. Now I can finally get my water." She took the water bucket from his hands. "Here take this flask with you. It'll probably have more use with you then me."

Legeron received a flask and 10 XP points. He was halfway to level 2.
