Chapter 6 - 06 Catastrophe

!!DEATH FLAG!!

Though Konigsdottir was one cohort away she could clearly hear their conversation. In her mind's eye she saw a death flag raised after Astrid promised Bobby she'll marry him when they get back home. What have those two been doing this past month? As far as she knew they didn't know each other during the competition.

The battle continued through the night and into the next morning. The cohorts Of heroes alongside the regular army rebuffed all the minor demons scaling the wall. Konigsdottir watched as heroes increased their fighting speed as their experience increased by tens of levels.

Konigsdottir felt the demon before she saw it as it leapt over the wall to land amid her cohort shattering the defensive barrier. It's bloody black bristles gleamed as its crazed eyes took in its surroundings. As a bipedal boar it charged with its tusks at the ballistae. It's razor sharp tusk slicing the thick bowstring before throwing its weight against the pedestal and snapping the table.

Cohort 6 was designated to form the barrier defense only watched in horror as the demon turned around slicing a magic user in half easier than a scissor cutting tissue paper.

"To me, to me. Form a barrier again quickly!" shouted Konigsdottir. As the sole spear user in the cohort she couldn't let the magic users die. Her cohort spoke Western Common and didn't understand her. They were frozen in place and died one after another.

Konigsdottir thrust her spear against the demon's rear. Too shallow to penetrate the hide, however, it got the demon's attention. It pivoted in place faster than a power forward and charged. Konigsdottir planted the spears base against her rear instep as the let a hint of her mana flow into her weapon.

The demon impaled itself on her boarspear

with the cross guard stopping its forward movement. The weapon flared briefly searing a nasty hole into the demon. Too shallow to kill the demon it disengaged and leapt back over the wall.

Konigsdottir began pushing her surviving members to join Astrid's cohort. Only four left she thought. Astrid, Bobby,Ken and Kita joined her four remaining cohort members.

The following morning as the sun rose higher the dwindling demon forces finally retreated.

Blood, gore, feces, urine, broken weapons, discarded armor and dead bodies littered the wall. Healers tended the wounded. Clerics prayed for those beyond help. Of the hundred summoned heroes less than half survived their first major battle. Still it was better than the army that was obliterated protecting the newbie heroes.
