I turned and frowned at the two guards, schooling my face instantly as they looked at me with serious expressions. "Good Afternoon," The Male guard said, and I looked them over to take in as much information as I could. Instantly, one thing I could tell was that they were not above C rank. They were almost at the peak of C rank but not quite there to have the potential to change to a B ranker.
One Guard was in armored robes, which had a chest protector that rubbed a little on the battle skirt that hung loosely around her legs. Her breasts pushed out the chest protector a little, and I guessed that it was custom armor for the woman as she carried no weapon on her as she approached me with the man. She was also shorter than the man by at least a foot, and I guessed by the scales I saw on her neck a little that she was a succubus.
The male Guard was holding a Halberd, which I thought was interesting as it was taller than him. I felt he was skilled with that weapon and would not be a pushover. He was at least six feet five inches, and the horns coming out of his head showed him as a devil, and he looked unfriendly.
To my relief, since they were both C rank, these two were not here to do anything to me. Or they did not have information about my strength, which was a relief in itself. I looked them up and down as the female guard said, "Good Afternoon, what is your name?"
"I am Sally, and I am late for something. Can I go?" I said with a smile.
"No, you cannot," the man said, and I felt my eyelid twitch at the disrespect.
"We are here to investigate a crime from the other night by order of our captain."
I was surprised that they were even investigating it, and I looked at them with an appropriate amount of surprise. "Oh?" I said with scared tension in my voice, wanting to sneer. I'm sorry to hear that. I am guessing you are approaching me because you want to ask me questions." I said the obvious, and both guards nodded.
"Yes," the woman said, clearly taking the lead as the man looked more intimidated. That store you just walked out from. What is happening inside?" she asked, and I quickly came to a decision.
"Oh, not too long ago, I purchased the shop for a business venture, and the previous store was not doing so well. An old man owned the shop and sold it to me after I flaunted enough silver and copper coins to get him to sell. He sure took me to the cleaners," I said with a sad sigh.
"So you are the owner of the property now?" She asked.
"Oh, yes, I got a deed from the man signed for, and I gave him fifty gold, silver, and Copper—basically all my liquid funds for the next couple of months. I even had to reassure my employees that I would pay enough for their food and shelter until I could start paying full wages again and a little extra until I made up for the lost wages," I told her with a frown, sounding like I wanted to leave.
The woman looked at me with a frown and looked to the male guard, and I sighed, "You know, that old guy made me pay more than what the place was worth, but I needed the place for this business idea, and the location mattered more than I wish to admit."
"So, were you mad at the old man?"
"Not really?" I lied with ease, continuing the annoyance, "I am a merchant, and I would do the same as him." I looked at the woman and shrugged, "I would punch him in the face for the bullshit that he made me go through on the negotiation because he was acting like a bastard, but I respect the old man too. He noticed how much I wanted the place and that I would not have gone higher than fifty gold. A man might have had a failing business, but he pinned me down and screwed me."
"So, you're saying you have the deed," The woman asked.
"Yes," I paused, looked down, sighed, and looked at her again with Curiosity. "I'm sorry," I said slowly. Do you mind if I know why you are asking me these questions? Did that old man do something or have something happen to him?" I asked, "He didn't accuse me of something, did he?" My voice suddenly turned hostile, losing the annoyance, as if I were being accused of something.
"It seems that he was robbed, and most of the money you gave him was missing." The woman said, and I noticed her eyes looking at me even more with judgment.
I had been through this before in my past life.
I looked at her with the appropriate amount of shock and understanding, "Is he okay?" I asked, sounding like I cared a little bit but still a little annoyed that they were keeping me from better things, "I handed him all those coins, and he said he was going right back inside after coming out and giving me the deed, which I changed hands with him for the bag of coins," I said slowly, "We even did it in a dark corner so people wouldn't see. I thought we took precautions." My voice was the perfect level of sympathy and annoyance, as if I had thought about the precautions that were ultimately fruitless. "I last saw him going into his house, really happy, with a grin, holding my bag of silver and copper." I finished with a sigh, "So much gold is gone."
I watched as the female guard's gaze turned less and less inquisitive. She looked at the male guard, and he looked at her, and he shook his head, and she nodded. "Are you going to be around if we have any further questions?" she asked.
"Please, I am in the middle of starting up a business; I am not leaving anywhere; you can find me by going to the receptionist I assign to the front counter when we open." I replied, "But, if you don't mind, I have somewhere to go, and you have held me up for long enough, and I did not want to be rude." My voice was hinting that I had much better things to do and was straining myself not to be disrespectful, "Please, Guards, I need to go; I am busy." I said, sounding almost desperate to leave for that appointment.
Both guards nodded. "You can go," the female guards said, and I smiled brightly, like it was the best news of the day. I turned and started to walk away at a brisk pace, almost purposefully, bumping into others as I went.
As I disappeared from sight, my mind went into overdrive, and I could not help but want to curse up and down the street.
Talking to those guards was fucking stupid, but I would have looked more suspicious if I did not talk to them. This was no modern world with Trials and attorneys. This was a brutal medieval world where people could torture a confession out of you. I cursed, wondering why the guards even cared. That male guard was clearly out of his depth, while the woman was not hard to read.
She did not suspect me anymore for the moment, and neither did the man.
I sighed and hoped it would continue to stay that way.
