Yiyi wasn't tall, but it wasn't something she had ever felt sad about. Even fifteen years old, she was cute with her pinkish hair in pig tails, bright yellow spectacles on her golden brown eyes, short bangs falling over her forehead, short sleeved shirts wrapping her smallish chest, and long shorts hanging proudly over her short legs. Every time she looked into a mirror, a smiling girl greeted her. So, she always took herself as a happy girl. And why not. The very tall You with his long black hair, deep black eyes, thin and strong body, and long, long legs, wasn't only the most handsome boy of the neighbourhood and the prince of the school, but was also her neighbour and childhood friend. Just thinking about her closeness to him flew her up to the fluffy clouds.
Right now though, she wasn't feeling like herself. The tears in her eyes and the frown on her face and the sorrow she was radiating was all evidence of her great unhappiness. She was at school, hiding around the corner from where You had just accepted Min's confession. Yeah, Yiyi was crying her heart out. And right in front of her was a window that turned into a hazy mirror determined to hide away the tarnishing of her image of happiness.
'What are you so sad about?' She asked herself.
The question wasn't wrong. It wasn't as if the scenario erupted out of nowhere. Min had never hidden her interest toward You. Three quarters of the girls in the school were interested in You. But Min was different. She was in the same class as You. She was the brightest in the class, had the best grades, and was among the prettiest. She was tall, enough to reach past You's shoulders. Her chest was neither too big nor small, just right. She had dimples when she smiled. And when she was unhappy, her eyes turned watery as if swimming in tears held back. Her light brown hair was curly and long, and oozed softness that screamed of wanting to be petted. Most importantly, You looked at her with a little more warmth than he did at anyone else. Even Yiyi.
Yiyi had seen her childhood friend grow closer to the girl she didn't like very much, and did nothing. So, yeah, it was her fault, in a way. Why then was she so sad? She was always the good girl. Quiet. Having the littlest presence. Following the rules. Head stuck behind a book, pen in hand, eyes on the pages. Still, not the brightest. Even though she had such deep affection for You, she wouldn't even look at him, because that wasn't something good girls did. Even now, she shouldn't be sad or crying, because that wasn't something good girls did. That's what everyone was always saying.
But she was sad. She wanted to cry. She didn't want to be a good girl. Because it was all her fault.
'That's so stupid.'
The voice came out of nowhere, right by her ear. Yiyi was startled. That moment of surprise broke her free of her sorrow, if only for that moment. Even as she felt the sorrow returning, the voice continued.
'Think about it,' the voice that sounded like a girl's said. 'You is smart, isn't he? The two of you walked to school together every morning, returned home together every afternoon. You spend all your holidays with him. In all that time, do you really think he didn't notice your feelings? Do you really think, the smart and handsome You wasn't aware that you liked him as more than just a childhood friend? Why then do you think he still kept silent?'
Yiyi was stunned. She looked into the hazy window and saw the unclear reflection of a pair of twins by her two sides. The one speaking was to her right. And the one on her left was quiet, but her hard eyes made it clear that she had the same opinion.
'Wouldn't that mean, You is,' Yiyi said, but wasn't able to finish.
'Yes,' the twin on the right said, nodding her head vigorously.
'You is an ass,' the twin on the left said without the slightest warmth in her voice. 'And you're stupid for having liked him for so long. Even more stupid for believing in that idiotic definition of a good girl.'
Yiyi froze. The sorrow was somewhere so far away that she couldn't see its shadow. She was now filled with curiosity and a strange sense of excitement. She was staring into the hazy window, within which she was shedding several layers of skin, like a reptile, and a new, brighter her was coming out from underneath. The new Yiyi was brighter than the yellow glasses on her eyes, and even brighter than the shiny golden shoes on her feet. She smiled at the new Yiyi, already liking her very much.
'What do I do now then?' Yiyi asked.
'Simple,' the twin on the left said. 'Find the dark prince.'
'The dark prince?' Yiyi asked confusedly.
'Yeah,' the twin on the right continued, nodding again, vigorously. 'You is the school prince, isn't he? So, there's definitely a dark prince, who is just as popular, if not more, but not in the light like You. The dark prince is quiet, buried in the shadows. Everyone knows of him, but no one speaks much of him, because as bedazzled as they are all by him, they are also frightened. That is the inescapable charm of the dark prince.'
'Oh,' Yiyi said slowly, understanding dawning upon her. 'Find the dark prince, and win him. And then, cause You to be filled with regret and loss.'
'Nope,' the twin on the left said with complete sincerity. 'Destroy the heartless You.'
Yiyi was surprised. She had a funny expression on her face, and her mouth hung open so wide her jaw was almost on the floor. The twin on the right was the same.
