There were fully-formed pets and those that could hatch from eggs, the difference being that once hatched, they can no longer evolve. Because the fully-formed ones have a set form, their attributes are generally stronger than those just hatched, which can provide players with assistance during a certain period, whereas pets hatched from eggs can evolve.
All pets could level up, but fully-formed ones can't evolve. On the other hand, those hatched from eggs could, and therein lies the essential difference.
