Chapter 104 - The pebbles in my shoes (1)

Amandla and Lazar were running in one of the countless trashed streets of Boston, it had been a few minutes now since they left the construction site and they were heading towards Lazar's neighborhood to rest as well as take care of some things that promised to be unpleasant...

The day had just begun on a very good note, yet, unlike Amandla who was grinning, Lazar seemed unmoved since no signs of satisfaction could be seen on his face despite the tremendous success he and his partner had just achieved.

In general, killing the people at the top of an organization amounts indirectly to killing the organization itself. Apparently Lazar wasn't aware of that principle because even now he was inexpressive...

It was one of those things that I found intriguing about him; it was easy for me to determine when he was happy, angry or annoyed but when our bond wasn't helping me to understand him I was unable to tell the difference between his other emotions because they were all hidden behind an unreadable mask of indifference.

Maybe he was worried, maybe he was sorrowful, maybe he was none of the above and his inexpressiveness was due to the fact that he was merely thinking of nothing in particular, but I couldn't tell, and since getting to know Lazar I figured that if the interrogations I had regarding him weren't intrusive all I had to do was being direct with him if I wanted to get answers so that's what i was going to do...

"You don't look pleased." I stated in a casual tone without stopping to run while staring at Lazar's stern face from the corner of my right eye.

Still impassive in appearance, he nonetheless answered me with a certain amount of warmth in his voice, "And yet I am."

"By the way..." He started to add as he gradually approached me while adapting his running speed to mine...

"...thanks for not having chickened out Amandla." He concluded on a playful note before giving me a strong slap in the right shoulder that almost made me stumble since, despite the fact he had come close to me, I wouldn't have thought that he would have done it for that considering how rare physical contacts with him were.

"For fuck sake!" I cursed while trying to regain my balance as Lazar accelerated to outrun me.

"You're done for!" I threatened him without actually trying to catch up to him because besides the fact that he was too fast for me, I knew that this interaction wasn't meaningless, for me it was Lazar's way to tell me that our relationship was no longer superficial and I was hoping that on this point I wasn't doing an error of interpretation because despite his asshole's gesture I had to admit that I was somewhat moved.

9:00 a.m

Boston (Fenno Street)

***

The mess in which Lazar will find Fenno Street will be quite different from the one in which he had left it, that much was sure. The number of soldiers in and around the area had multiplied by at least 40 since his departure and the proportion of wounded out of the total headcount was more than worrying judging by the ridiculous number of tents that had been set up to take care of them…

Also, as he must have suspected it, when he would arrived the prospect of resting was likely to be compromised since many people needed answers and he had been designated as the person who had them…

But knowing his character, it wouldn't be Sullyvan or another representative of the Army who would cause him the biggest headache but the person who was making a scene in front of his house.

[Katelyn's POV]

I was waiting for Lolo's return sitting on the steps leading to the door of his house and for the fourth time this moronic soldier repeated to me the same nonsense, "Soldier Walker was very clear about what would happen if someone trespassed on his property. Miss, you have to leave." She told me with an annoyed gaze.

As luck would have it, it was a quite young woman who said that to me. Did she really think I wouldn't understand her little game? And frankly, although she seemed to have a decent body wanting my Logan with gorilla hands like hers was just pathetic.

"Why can't you just leave me alone?!" I shouted at her while trying to kick her in the right leg which was covered with bandages.

My foot connected and the reaction I expected wasn't long in coming, "Damn! You fucking..." She cursed as she fell to the ground, her face distorted by pain and anger…

An anger that I hastened to extinguish, "You fucking what?" I asked slowly before standing up and walking towards her, determined to put her in her place or at least make her join her friends that I was hearing crying in pain in the tents around in the case she still couldn't understand to whom Logan was belonging.

"Do you even know who I am?" I added as I placed my foot on her injured leg, ready to apply pressure.

"You are fucking insane!" She retorted with insolence before clenching her teeth because I wasn't stopping myself from hurting her anymore.

No one was coming to her aid, at first I didn't know if it was because everyone (except her apparently) was far too busy to have noticed what was going on or because no one had the guts to go against me knowing who my father was, then I understood that another event had captured the attention of the soldiers.

2 minutes before

[Lazar's POV]

***

The message that I had asked Katelyn to transmit to Sullyvan had for goals to warn him of what had happened at the TD Garden in the very unlikely case that he was unaware of it as well as to inform him that the means of communication of the army were compromised since the enemy had access to them and especially to ask him to manage by all means necessary to gather in the same place (that is to say Fenno Street) the soldiers who had survived up to then to carry out a large-scale offensive…

Considering what Amandla and I were seeing when we entered a street near Fenno Street, the message had been transmitted and Sullyvan had succeeded in doing what I had asked him.

Amandla elbowed my shoulder, "What do you think?" She asked me while gazing at the hundreds of soldiers in a frenzy in front of us which were tending to their wounded and unloading their trucks.
