Chapter 5 - Chapter5: A Dangerous Path (part 2)

Fifty-three minutes have passed and they're still chasing us. If I don't take a break soon, I might pass out or my legs will give out, whichever happens first. While running I slowly drifted to left to avoid the cliff on my right. But the wolves were trying to guide me towards the cliff.

Quickly turning my head in every direction, I saw no escape route, and the closer I got to a wolf the more they would growl preparing to attack. Not wanting me and Maru to be hurt I realize it's not worth it. Maybe I can find another escape this way. So, I obliged slowing my pace and trapping myself at the cliffside.

Then when I stopped and faced them, they surrounded me completely. From behind the wolves I heard a voice. "A wise decision indeed."

The wolves made an opening as a large bulky male walked through the gap staring me down. He was tall… taller than me with a black coat highlighted in white, he was a genuine alpha male. He was looking down upon me. And that stern gaze of his made me shiver, but I stood tall suppressing my fear. Maru seemed confused staring at all the wolves. Suddenly, Maru slid down my back on to the ground.

Maru: "wofy"

The wolf male's eyes flew to Maru "I wonder what a dog like you is doing with a young human child". I stared at him wanting to speak but that cold gaze of his made it hard. It felt almost like I was choking on my words.

Taking a deep breath, fearlessly walking up to him, looked him in the eye while standing too close for comfort, in a daring tone I said "What does it matter to you? Do you want something from me?"

All the wolves stared at me in awe, while the alpha male laughed at me. I looked at him dumbfounded after all that effort. He… laughed at me and tried to hold a straight face as he said "You're a fierce one… not even of one of my pack would dare do that".

"You're a tough one" he said to me grinning. Confused I stared at him tilting my head. They don't seem as dangerous as I initially thought. Perhaps I misjudged them or... not. I still don't know their reason for chasing me down, until then I'll be cautious around them.
