Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 - Broken Power

The space contorted and contracted. For a terse moment it seemed as if the very laws of nature might rebel against repulsive aura that pervades the air. Pungent bright light stung his eyes as the world disappeared from his eyes. Nauseating sensations coerced his being as his mind was occluded with meaningless data. The state of his body and mind remained in the state of agony as time flowed.

What is the purpose of life? Surely not pain and confusion. Life is meant to be enjoyed! Yet humanity was cast into disorder as every citizen was subjected to the transition. Who had time to contemplate life when they were wracked in pain and manacled senses?

The time of limbo was as long as it was painful. Its abrupt stop pulled each and every man, woman, and child to their senses. This is where most of humanity died.

Augus didn't open his eyes. They were never closed in the first place. His sight just returned the moment the pain left. He was no longer in the dumpster. He laid in the middle of a forest as he picked himself up and looked around.

He had a feeling he left earth. If the divine voice, fluctuations, and pain that he had witnesses were not evident enough then the two meter long dragonfly staring at him helped him figure it out. The oversized insect hovered above the floor of the forest as it gazed at the human before it flew off into the trees.

Augus barely had any time to think before suddenly he heard a rustle in the bushes behind him. Jolting, he turned around; Augus came face to face with what can only be described as terror. Standing a meter tall and two meters long stood a large mutated apex predator feline. It could barely be considered a cat. Last time he remembered cats didn't have three eyes. He was pretty sure most cats didn't have spiked tails and he was one-hundred percent sure cats did jaws weren't supposed to open vertically.

The mutated beast lunged at him as he staggered away barely collapsing to the ground in time to doge the harsh claws and teeth that tracked his body. He quickly pushed himself further away as he rolled and staggered to his feet. Augus took off faster than he had ever ran before.

Nothing quite inspires effort like the threat of death on your heels. He stuck close to trees in an effort to evade the beast. Sadly he quickly found out that not only were mutated beast cats much quicker than him, but clever too. He rushed through the forest before coming to a halt, "Aw, come on two on one isn't fair!"

Augus had been led into an ambush. He couldn't decide which beast to watch as his head rotated on a swivel back and forth. The first beast roared with its strange vertical jaws opening up wide. Hope was fleeting as he awaited the inevitable.

As he stood in fright waiting for his final moments, the second beast lunged for his throat. In an attempt to dodge, he tripped backwards. The beast was nearly on him as he glared back at it with contempt.

He may have never found his passion on earth, but he realized now that there was something he had a passion for: Living. He was apparently not very good at it though. With not much time left in his life he mustered up his strength and threw a punch as hard as he could into the third eye of the beast.

With a loud snap and the beast fell onto him. But rather then bite and claw his life apart. It just layed on top. Thirty seconds passed before he finally gained the ability to shove the beast off with the left arm which wasn't covered by the beast.

He looked to where the other beast had been and noticed it running off in the distance. He looked back to the one that had collapsed onto him earlier as he cried out, " I did it! I Augus defeated the cat beast with a single punch! I am invincible! MAWAHAHAHA!"

A voice startled him from his victory, "Oh wow, this is embarrassing, but that was actually me."

He looked over to the stranger. It was a man with a bow and quiver strapped to his back. Man wasn't the right definition. He was definitely male, but he was not human at all. In Fact, he had a tail. Humans definitely didn't have tails or fluffy ears. Unless humans all mutated! Augus quickly turned to look at his own ass. Nope no tail. Definitely not a human. He decided to talk to the creature that supposedly killed the mutated beast, "I definitely killed this one! Look at it! I caved its head in with one punch to its eye! I heard it crack! See"

Augus continued to point to the beast. The creature's tail wagged back and forth as he smiled in pity and replied, " Well my arrow is in the chest, which is where I struck its heart. Plus I think you might not be in the right mind right now. You aren't even pointing to the corpse right now."

Augus started to doubt his strength as he glanced at the now noticeable arrow in the side. He reluctantly gave up on the kill as he said, "Okay maybe I didn't kill it but I defined cracked its head a bit. I heard it. And although my mental state is a little frazzled from being chased I havent lost my mind. I'm definitely pointing at the…"

As he glanced at his pointing hand which was pointing directly at the ground. It took a sharp ninety degree turn from his arm as it limply hung at an unnatural angle. Augus cried out in horror, "AWW SHIT! MY HAND. MY GODDAMN HAND. IT DONE GONE BROKE!"

The creature replied, "That was most definitely the snapping sound you heard… And he fainted..."
