Chereads / A Legendary Thief / Chapter 59 - The Trap

Chapter 59 - The Trap

It was not totally unexpected for a regular monster to drop a green-level item, especially when one was carrying out a special task. This was why the chance of regular monsters dropping high-level items was higher than usual. What excited Xiao Yu the most was that he had gotten a ring. Every player could wear five rings, but few players could collect five rings at the beginning of the game. One more ring meant more features the player would be able to unlock.

Xiao Yu calmed down after feeling excited for some time. He didn't forget that he still had a task to accomplish.

He relied on the concealing effect of stealth travel to approach the tent located in the southeast corner. He covered every inch of the way with great caution.

Xiao Yu took a look at the sentry tower and found that the crossbows were constantly firing, with the silver tip of the arrows reflecting the blinding sunlight. He could sense a hint of cold intent from the metallic glow.

He covered a 10-meter area that was occupied by seven gnolls and then hid behind a tent. After looking out, he could see that there weren't any gnolls patrolling the ground seven meters away from the target tent. It was deathly quiet in the surroundings. However, Xiao Yu still had a bad feeling in his heart.

Xiao Yu looked at the ground and found that the surface had been swept, and no footprints could be found.

"I guess there must be a trap hiding here somewhere. Otherwise, it would be impossible for the gnolls not to patrol this important area, since that special box is here." Now that the ground was swept, it was impossible to tell where the trap was. And Xiao Yu hadn't learned how to dismantle traps yet, so all he could do was test and find out the position of the trap.

The gnoll closest to him was about ten meters away. It seemed that the gnolls were not worried about this area at all, so they were not paying any attention to it. This offered Xiao Yu a good opportunity to try and find the trap.

"The major problem is the seven crossbows over my head. How am I going to get past those?" He chose a spot where only three crossbow archers had the possibility of seeing him. This was the best he could manage.

But Xiao Yu found an interesting fact that the three crossbows were constantly turning around and would complete a rotation every three minutes. All three crossbows faced the other side for about one minute, during which Xiao Yu should be absolutely safe.

He let out a faint smile, thinking that the game designer had truly put some thought into the making of this task. In order to avoid designing a task that couldn't be completed, the designer would always have to create them in a way that allowed the players a chance to be successful.

Seven meters meant seven big steps. However, these seven steps were full of risks. To step on seven safe spots was indeed a difficult thing.

As the three crossbows turned to face the other side, Xiao Yu took a step on the open ground.

"There's no danger." He put down his foot and ascertained that the spot he stepped on was safe. Then he took another step and slowly put down the tips of his toes. As soon as he touched the ground with his toes, he sensed something was out of place.

"No, there's a trap!"

He was struck by this thought in his mind. Countless thick spikes sprang up from the ground. As he was on the brink of being poked into a beehive, Xiao Yu brought his foot back.

Hiding skill!

The invincibility effect of the hiding skill in the first second blocked the attacks of these ground spikes.

Xiao Yu retreated, and the ground spikes vanished automatically after the first round of attacks. All had returned to tranquility as if nothing had happened.

This was a continuous type of trap, meaning that it could continuously work after being triggered. If Xiao Yu stepped on it again, he would trigger it one more time. It looked like he could in no way step on that spot again, so he had to find another path.

This was a truly difficult task. If he didn't learn skills like the hiding skill, his chance of completing this task would be less than 10%.

"This task must be designed for thieves that are level 10 or higher. Without the help of windy steps or the hiding skill, it's impossible to complete this task," thought Xiao Yu while rotating the dagger in his hand.

He was waiting for the cool-down of the hiding skill to be over and for the three crossbows to turn the other way. His left foot stepped on the safe spot he had done earlier, and then he looked for the next step.

He felt relieved after he put his weight on the spot and found it was safe. The process was quite a challenge for his mental psyche because his nerves were always tense each time he stepped down.

Seeing the three crossbows turn toward him, Xiao Yu quickly retreated to the hiding spot to avoid being discovered by the archers.

He tested his way forward by taking a tremendous risk because he could be killed at any moment. In the end, Xiao Yu found six safe stepping spots. As long as he could step on these six spots, he would be able to reach the silvery-white tent.

As for what it was like inside the tent, he had no idea.

Seeing the crossbows turn away from him, Xiao Yu tiptoed over the six spots and arrived before the silvery-white tent.

Hiding skill!

Xiao Yu fount out the condition inside the silvery-white tent after he entered it. There were many storage shelves in the silvery-white tent, behind which he could hide easily.

He was searching among the storage shelves for the loot box described by Xin Huo. As he rounded a storage shelf, he saw three gnoll guards. He quickly stepped back.

He looked out from behind the storage shelf and saw a large glittering box placed in the corner of the tent two meters away from the three gnolls.

"That should be the loot box Xin Huo talked about," thought Xiao Yu. However, the three gnolls were so close to the box that it was truly difficult to open the box without being noticed by the three gnolls.

The three gnolls yawned in tandem and looked rather tired. One of the gnolls would take a look at the box every 10 seconds.

This meant that he only had 10 seconds to go around the gnolls, reach the box, take out the scroll and leave the place, in addition to spending five seconds opening the box. This was truly a bizarre task.

Xiao Yu was hesitant. "It's not so hard to take out the scroll," Xiao Yu thought. "But after 10 seconds, the three gnolls will definitely discover that the loot box has been opened. And they will certainly call upon their colleagues to chase and surround me. It seems that leaving this camp with the scroll will be a life or death situation."

He was lost in thought while hiding behind the storage shelf. He was trying to figure out how to deal with the situation.

"I'll give it everything I've got. I should be able to make it." After looking at the escape dagger in his right hand, his confidence seemed to have increased a little. He switched on the voice system to contact An Yu.

"How are you doing over there?" The anxious voice of An Yu came out right away as soon as the voice system was connected.

"It's not too bad so far. But I need your help. Try your best to draw as many gnolls as possible outside the camp, and keep them there as long as you can," said Xiao Yu. Such action on Any Yu and the other's part might be able to help him escape.

"Rest assured. We'll do it," An Yu promised keenly.
