Chapter 2
She stepped into the building. It was noisy inside. She followed the signs towards the registration desk. It shouldn't have been so surprising, but she still growled in dissatisfaction after she saw the queue despite the 5 receptionists. Finally, it was her turn. She went almost crazy as there was an idiotic couple in front of here talking so much nonsense. She went over to the free desk.
- Welcome to the Adventurer Guild! Please fill out this form before we can start.
- Thank you! - Adeline gave her best to smile.
She filled out the form with her basic data, and handed it to the cute girl behind the desk.
- Will this be fine?
- Yes, perfect. - she glanced at the registration form. - It's good to see an Earth resident to registrate. Now please hold out your hands and place it on this glass ball.
- What is this? - asked Adeline while holding out her hands.
- It's a device to measure your current power and your potential as well. Actually, as you're an Earth resident, I dare to share this with you, but between us, there are a lot of different beings coming and going around this place, I've never seen anyones like them. Fluffy ears and tails and things... It really is weird. As they don't move out of the guild much, due to the galaxy gate being inside the building, the people outside realized only a little. With so many different beings around here, we have to measure them, but some of them doesn't even have hands, they just look like a big green jelly. Sometimes this job gets really weird. - she said as she laughed quietly.
- So what does this do now?
- As I said, it measures your potential. As you place your hand, different colors will appear. The outer color signals your current power, and the inside represents your potential.
As Adeline reached out to the ball. It just started to change color when a commotion appeared at the next desk where the boy from the idiotic couple stood. The receptionists at that desk started to scream shocked, so Adeline's receptionist went over to see the problem. Adelaide was a bit clueless, being left alone. She watched the ball changing color to red, with an ink black middle, when with a little pop it changed to light blue with a turquoise middle.
- Oh, it's E rank! Actually it's quite common in this place. Most adventurers from Earth belongs to this class. And your potential is rank D, that's quite nice too. With a little training, you can reach that D rank, it's usually enough for most of the tasks around here. Only pioneers at the edge of the galaxy needs to have class A or above.
- How many classes are there?
- From A to F. There are some special individuals above A, their class is rank S, and I've heard there are some unimaginable prodigies who are above the S class, but that's really out of reach for a little place like our Earth. - she smiled as she filled out the necessary forms. - This is your adventure card, make sure to keep it by your side all the time. It'll need a drop of blood to register, can I?
Adeline nodded, luckily she wasn't too afraid of needles. When a drop of blood touched the card, it glowed for a moment, then her name and data appeared on it.
- Make sure not to loose it, alright?
- Of course! - Adeline slid the card into her pockets. - By the way, what was the commotion before?
- Oh! There was a guy there with rank B potential! That's really rare, I've only seen it once before. He's going to be an awesome adventurer here, too bad he's already got a girlfriend. - Adeline could see the longing on the receptionist's face. - Anyway, we are done, Good luck on your journey.
- Uhm, can I ask one more thing?
- Yes?
- Where can I apply for quests?
- Oh, do you see that big screen next to the tables? All the available quests are on it. But you can also download it to your handphone, so you can stay up to date with any changes in the quests. This service comes with a fee, of course. Shall I activate it for you?
- No thanks, maybe later.
- Oh and one more thing! My name is Natasha, look for me anytime, if you need any assistance. - I'll share my contact info with you.
- Of course, thank you very much.
Natasha held out her right hand, where around the wrist a screen lighted up. Adeline did the same, and when their skin touched, she felt a little vibration. Natasha's contact info was already in her handphone.
She left the tables, and started to walk around the place. Besides the registration desks, the bar was also placed on the ground floor. There was a usual practice amongst adventurers, they gathered here at the bar area after each mission, so everyone knew right away when someone from their peers haven't arrived yet. When a group gathered here after completing a mission, it showed everyone they survived another day. Adeline didn't bother to go there, as she wasn't familiar with anyone. She went closer to the mission board. The missions were listed on a big screen, but one could also use the smaller touchscreen terminals or their handphones to browse through. She went to one of the terminals, the missions could be filtered by the number of team members needed for the missions, the difficulty, by recommended gender, recommended skills. There was a lot of options. Adeline scanned her adventurer card, and choose the E difficulty quests. A message popped up on the screen.
- All of the available missions require a team of at least three persons.
Adeline hit OK, and began to browse through the missions. There was a relatively easy one, gathering some plants from one of the neighboring planets. Traveling was almost instant with the help of the galaxy gate. This plant was quite common, according to the mission description, and a 3D digital print was also available for the mission. This made the successful completion much easier, as her handphone could scan any plants, and after comparing to the 3D model, the chance of getting the wrong plant was almost nil. She tapped on the mission, and another message popped up.
- Please proceed with adding your team members.
She clicked on 'Next'.
- You have insufficient number of members. Would you like to look for available adventurers?
After she touched 'Confirm', a 2D model of the guild showed up. All the adventurers who set themselves available for team up were shown in green, and all the others were red dots, marking the exact same spot as in real life. Those in the vacancy of the guild building were also listed on the sides. Only two people were available at the moment, they were almost the same age as Adeline.
