Chapter 1 - The Beginning

Metal smashed against metal, slamming against one another in repeated strikes, parrying and blocking in quick succession. Around the two fighters, a field of fire surrounded them. The fight raged on while the area around them continued burning brightly, wounds lined their bodies, slashes to burns.

Sparks flew while the battle raged on, intensifying and slowing down periodically as the two couldn't gain an upper hand. Locked in a stalemate, the anger and tiredness on their faces worsened with each passing minute.

Continuing to strike, he slammed his blade down on his opponent, finally breaking through and landing a hit on the user.

The user dropped his blade, now kneeling on the ground as blood trickled down from the long slash on his body.

He fell to the ground, defeated, beaten, the flame from his hand slowly fizzling out. Venator walked towards the user.

"Who...Are....You?" The magic asked, struggling with pain in his voice.

"Just a killer." Venator simply replied, the blade drove into the user's chest, quickly ending his life.

Taking it out, he began wiping it clean with cloth. The task was completed, the user he was sent to kill is now dead.

"That god better have what i asked for." He spoke to himself, finishing up with cleaning. With one hand, he extended it forward. Speaking a few words, a portal slowly formed up, leading to a cloud.

Venator stepped inside the portal. Once his feet landed on the ground of the other side, the portal closed behind him.

In front of him was a being of fire and smoke in the form of a human. The god that sent him to kill the magic user. He stood on a cloudy place, a small home was behind the god, his small humble abode on the sky.

"He's dead, where's the power you promised?" Venator demanded.

Without speaking, the figure extended a hand, on it an orb of red and orange fire burned.

Venator held it with an empty hand, the fire floated on his palm, in seconds it fizzled out as black smoke seeped into his hand. He clenched his hand in pain as the heat started burning inside.

After a few seconds, it was over.

Venator stood with his hand still extended, opening his eyes. A ball of blue flame soon started burning above his hand. Feeling no sense of pain from it while it crackled and swayed.

Flashing a smile. He bid farewell to the being, who still stood by, silent, and almost statue-like.

"Time for another world to get a task from a god." He started forming another portal, this time, to a dirt road surrounded by short grass and a bright sunny day above. He stepped inside, leaving the other world.

The sun shone brightly above him, his feet stood on a dirt road leading somewhere. Tracks already printed down on it.

"Wonder what the god here does?" He asked himself, beginning to walk down the road. The road was long, with no town or village in the distance.

He continued walking, his head covered by a long tattered dark cloak extending from the head to his legs, wearing only a brown leather tunic and leather pants. Only bringing a small book and sword sheathe on his waist.

As he travelled, in the distance, the sight of what appeared to be a small town caught his eye.

"Finally, some humans." He spoke to himself, with a tone of relief.

As the buildings grew larger and larger the nearer he went, a man on a horse stopped next to him.

"You bear the look of a common bandit." The man spoke. His right hand nearing his sword.

"You need to worry not, i'm no bandit, nor do i desire to steal from anyone. I only desire to rest somewhere before i continue going on my way." Venator spoke, taking off his hood and facing the man.

A short silence followed as they stared at each other.

The man relaxed his hand, grabbing the lead of the horse.

"Very well, but i shall escort you on the way back. Bandits have been roaming around as of late." The man said.

"Thank you for your offer and hospitality." Venator replied.

The two arrived in the town, entering it. It was composed of small wooden houses, people walking around carrying food or buckets.

"If i may ask, is there a shrine or cathedral nearby?"

"The cathedral is in the capital, just keep walking on the road and you will reach it. Though, i suggest getting a horse, walking can be tiresome, especially when it's hot." The man replied.

As the two strolled, more and more people were walking around, a marketplace stood on the sides of the road.

"The inn is just there, the one with a stairwell heading up to the door. I bid farewell to you traveler." The man moved on his horse, leaving Venator.

"Kind and quite polite, thought i'd have to kill another normal human again." He spoke to himself.

"Wait, i don't have any coins or money." Venator realized, patting his waist and chest.

As he began walking to the inn, he bumped into another person.

"My apologies." Venator said. The person he bumped into promptly apologized as well.

As they walked away, Venator looked down at his hand.

"Some money for the inn." He spoke in his mind, quickly placing it on his waist and quickening the pace.

Up the stairs, he opened the door to the inn, in front was a wooden desk with someone already manning it.

"Good day to you sir." The woman greeted, a large book laid on the counter in front of her.

"I only need to rest for a day." Venator replied.

"Certainly, we still have room upstairs, for a day that will be 10 coins." Venator took out the pouch he stole, inside, there were just enough coins for him to use. He placed the coins on the desk, the woman quickly placing it below her.

"I will need to know your name sir." Venator stayed silent for a few seconds.

"Roderick." He replied to the woman who began writing down on the book.

"The room is just to the left on the stairwell." She replied back.

"Thank you." He started walking up the stairs to the room.

"How many more fake names do i have to use?" He muttered.

Up the stairs, a short hall with three doors on both sides awaited him, a window at the end of the hall gleamed light at him.

All the other doors were shut except one on the left, left ajar. He opened it, an empty room, a small desk, a bed, and a lit up candle were inside the room.
