Chapter 1 - Prologue

Leaves squished underneath her feet, the early signs of Spring awakening in the small town of Kelton, Oregon. This world was curious to her, new even. She had just moved from somewhere too far to reach then this place, where it was always Winter and never Spring. The snows fell constantly, her works a blanket of fluffy snow and darkness. She hadn't minded until she realized that there was more to the Universe then her cozy abode up in the mountains.

After she found out her life could be different and she could feel more then just cold, she had made up her mind that she would escape her father and find somewhere warm to live. Her mistake was in choosing Kelton, Oregon. Where is seemed to rain, sleet and snow still.

Violet eyes turned up to greet a cloudy sky, where rain droplets trickled out teasingly; ready to spill over and drench the world. She didn't like the rain all that much, she determined. It was cold, but worse then snow because it soaked you to the bone. It wasn't a good look.

"Hey, wait- you!" A baritone voice yelled behind her, but she paid no mind. She found out quickly there was noise here everywhere and her slightly pointed ears were sensitive.

"Jesus, woman. Do you not listen?" Someone grabbed her arm, jerking her towards the grass. Away from the side walk. Her eyes steeled on a man of great height, towering over her small frame like a giant from another world. A trimmed, red beard adorned his face and wild, various brown colored freckles accented his pale skin. He wore a green beanie, with a green and grey flannel shirt. Grey pants seemed to be his choice, with black combat boots. His look was certainly interesting.

"Excuse me?" Her black brows furrowed, wondering his whole reason for even approaching her and dare touching her.

"You dropped this..." He handed her a leather book, bound by green twine. Her light caramel skin seemed awfully dark compared to his almost ivory complexion.

"Ah, I see. Thank you." She looked him up and down, trying to decide on whether he was handsome or just funny looking.

"Your welcome..." He rubbed the back of his neck, while waving her off nonchalantly with the other. "It wasn't a big deal, it looks fancy enough to be important."

She blinked at him, then snorted and cocked her head to the side; her black curls swishing. "Not really, my father made it for me. It is important, which I appreciate you returning it." Cala took a step back, where her black flats hit pavement and she felt a little bit more relaxed with more distance between them.

"Yeah, well. See ya." He waved off awkwardly, to which she shrugged her shoulders and continued about the rest of her day. That was certainly interesting.

The rest of her day went quite uneventfully. She had to visit numerous stores to find furniture and decorations for her apartment. She didn't have anything too grand either, just a studio that seemed to be occupied with a previous tenants cat. She didn't have the heart to kick out the old, grey thing. It was missing one ear, half of it's whispered appeared to be permanently singled off and it kept giving her withered looks every-time she fed it a can of tuna.

She bought it a cat bed before she bought herself anything else. It seemed to really enjoy that, probably because it was old and arthritic.

She named the car Old Man. It seemed to suite him, but she swore she could feel him glaring at her behind her back.

Her furniture was supposed to arrive tomorrow, which was fine with her. She didn't require a lot of sleep as a nocturnal being and when she did sleep it was closer to sunset for a couple hours.

Cala learned fast that she might need a job, especially because she was running out of money that she stole from her father already. She kept having to buy Old Man cans of tuna. He was fat and lucky she didn't need mundane food to survive.

"I'm home Old Man!" She entered her apartment loudly, finding great enjoyment in startling the grey cat awake. He shot her a look of despair, to which she walked over to him and gave him a pat on the head.

"I had an exciting day. Met a strange pale man with fire hair and polka dots on his face. He was quite tall. I find humans so interesting every time I meet a new one. So diverse..." She stopped patting the cats head and sat down on the floor next to her. Her apartment was barren, save for her, a suitcase, the cat and the cat bed.

"I hope I see him again, I want to look at his face more. He is...unique." She smiled at the memory of his beard. Men where she came from did not have beards or freckles or red hair. Everyone was either really pale or really dark. She was the exception, being somewhere in the middle.
