Ye Wudao indeed knew that in ancient times, some tribes would use children for sacrificial rituals, so he speculated that the place resembling a well into which he had descended was probably the site of these sacrifices.
They would throw children into the well, after which they would fall into the Dark River, and, over the years, be washed up to this spot, accumulating so many skeletons; it was no wonder this place was teeming with resentful energy, giving rise to river spirits—it was not surprising at all.
But with so many child skeletons below, which one could be the skeleton of the river spirit? Ye Wudao was suddenly at a loss. He swam into the depression, estimating there were at least a hundred skeletons here—finding the exact skeleton of that child was practically impossible.
