How is this happening?
I am literally breaking the laws of physics. I wonder what Isaac Newton would think of this...
"You should be more careful." A boy was standing at the end of the stairs, glaring at me, as if my clumsiness had caused him some huge inconvenience. I was suddenly dropped to the ground. The magic had been expelled by the mystery boy. I yelped as I fell on my butt. My eyes were sending daggers at him. "What the hell! Couldn't you have put me down slowly?" The color from my face drained as It dawned on me that if this boy had the power to make me levitate he probably can kill me with the snap of his fingers.
"I-Uh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to swear at you, I've had a long day." I gave him the biggest, fakest smile I've ever shown and stood up to brush myself off. He smirked and confidently said, "Of course you did." He began walking towards a hallway to the left of the stairs but I ran up to stop him. "Hey! When a person says they're sorry you have to accept their apology!" I yelled as I glared at him even harder than I did before.
He turned around to look at me, "Do you know who I am?" I crossed my arms over my chest, "No and I don't want to know. Its disrespectful to use your status as a scapegoat." He chuckled in disbelief, "Says the spoiled brat." He must've heard some rumors from the maids and I opened my mouth to protest but quickly closed it. He was right, Jacelyn used her status as an excuse all the time to hurt people she thought were beneath her. I stepped away from him.
"Miss Blankley! I've been looking all over for you." hastily walking towards me in her long and classy black dress. She looked like she was ready for a funeral and if she hadn't interrupted I'm sure it would've been mine. I cast the magician a last glare which he returned before he walked off.
"You have?" She sighed, "Of course I have! I heard from some of the maids that your health has returned so I wanted to take the chance to speak to you about the future for you and the the prince." The future for me and her son? Maybe he is one of the workers here? The lady was starring at me expectantly. Oh god, should I guess what she means or just wait? When she realized I didn't understand she rolled her eyes.
"Lady Blankley, are you well? You couldn't possibly have forgotten about the engagement?" ENGAGEMENT? I never agreed to... Oh, right. I'm not me anymore. "No, miss Catebury. I most definitely have not."
The person Jacelyn was first set to marry was a stoic and emotionless man, his name is John Catebury. I remember feeling sorry for her several times because of that but my friends always said that she got what she deserved. I don't want the life that she lived. "Good, now go to the kitchen, I don't want you to grow up skin and bones, then you won't be able to bear strong children." My face heated up drastically, what the hell is wrong with this woman! Who in the world brings that up to their future daughter in law?!
"Uhm, where is the kitchen?" She scrunched her eyebrows together. "My god! The accident must've hurt you badly, you always enjoyed talking to the chefs in the kitchen." I smiled sheepishly at her, I mean, Jacelyn always liked the kitchen? In the book she was said to not have had any friends or interests other than tormenting the maids. "I'm slowly recovering so please don't worry about me." I reassured her, even though I'm positive that she didn't really worry much about me.
My cheeks were beginning to ache at this point because of all the fake smiling. "It's right down that hallway." She pointed to the hallway to the left of us, the same one the mystery boy had left through.
"Thank you." I did a small curtsy and scurried away towards the direction she pointed towards. I was ravenous. Whatever this world shift had done to me made me hungry.
"Wow..." The kitchen was beautiful and like everything else, completely different from what I grew up to. "Oh, miss! You're back! How are you?" I was immediately rushed by staff-members wondering how I was. "I'm fine now! There's no need to worry!"
An older man stepped forward, "But you still look red, that's a clear sign of illness." Why are all these people worried about me? Wasn't Jacelyn always mean towards them? According to the book she was a living hell to be around. "No, I'm fine, truly."
The staff made me more than enough food for one sitting, more than anyone can eat in one sitting. I was surely going to have a stomachache after this.
Speaking of living hell, my engagement has to be annihilated, quickly. The book says that due to an upcoming war our wedding will be abruptly moved to four months before it was supposed to be and the wedding is also where the story line begins. Since I know the story, I know the future of this world, including the war. If I can prove that I am of use during it then I could escape this fate. There is only one thing war is good for, letting the powerless gain power. "Um, Excuse me, I don't want to be a bother but could anyone show me to the library?" I asked the staff boy closest to me as sweetly as I could. "Of course, miss, I can show ya'!" To which he got an elbow in the stomach for by a nearby maid who most likely thought he was disrespectful, I had to stifle a laughter.
"Let's go, miss!" I walked close behind him. He was really nice and childish, I don't remember there being people like these in this mansion. "How long have you worked here? If you don‚'t mind me asking." I asked the boy to which he replied, "Oh, miss. Don't you remember?"
"Remember what?" Did Jacelyn know this staff member? And he seemed to get a bit gloomy when I asked that. "When you were eight you fell down a horse and I caught you, you've been afraid of horseback riding ever since." Jacelyn must've been really clumsy although she was always described as an elegant woman but cruel woman. "I lost some of my memory after the accident but I'm sure I'll get it back in no time." This time, my smile was genuine.
"We're here now, miss, so I'll take my leave if you don't mind." I waved my goodbye and he was quickly on his way and I was left with a giant library all to myself. It looked like those libraries you see in old British castles, but better!
The wedding is in about six years so I will be eighteen when it happens. And in two years the war is supposed to break out. That is, if I can't find a way for us to get the higher ground before it starts, but how?
Discrimination against women was never mentioned in the book and since I think the book writes the rules of this world then I would assume that it's not something relevant. It's a big assumption but I'll have to believe in it. I can't run away, my fiancé is powerful, I don't remember why though but I'm sure he'll hunt me down. And becoming something like a nurse is out of the question, I would surely get somebody killed.
But what if... I join as a soldier? It's a slow way to rise in ranks but if I manage to gain power on my own then John won't be able to do anything.
I'll be untouchable to him.
