Chereads / The story of a hero named Fishy / Chapter 88 - The Assassin (III)

Chapter 88 - The Assassin (III)

Having just finished their strange battle of trust, Fishy is joined in his room by a young girl; the same young girl he almost killed.

As promised by Fishy, he treated Ena to dinner, the two sat alone at a tiny table that bearly lifted off the ground with them sat at either end with a large plate stacked high, full of various meats, vegetables and even some savoury fruits. It seemed like a meal a king would request on arrival, but this large plate was for two people, one who was exhausted from not eating, and one who was recently a slave, unknowing of the last time she ate anything.

Fishy stared at the blue-haired girl who wore her dusty cloak at the dinner table, she looked down at her plate, poking it with a fork and watching it jiggle around.

"It's not poison." Fishy, knowing progress wouldn't happen unless he took action, leant over the table with his fork, stabbing a tiny potato that was in front of her, and eating it proudly. "See?"

Ena didn't say anything as she slowly started to become comfortable with the idea of being treated well. But, once she started to eat, the questions started. That was the reason for this meeting.

"So, how old are you?" Fishy asked.

"Don't you know it's rude to ask a girl her age?"

"You're a girl?" Fishy looked, dumbfounded at her. "But you have no chest?"

Ena's face turned sour as she flicked her knife at Fishy. Fishy burst into laughter as he easily dodged the knife, looking at Ena's annoyed yet embarrassed expression.

"I only joke. Just trying to lighten the mood."

"Whatever, I'm what you would call 18, but I've lived longer than that."

"I see, like a cat…" Fishy said only to be bitten back by a sudden crab.

"Nothing like a cat, we live for much longer."

"A crocodile?" Fishy turned his head in disbelief as he wondered how far he could go.

"What's a crocodile?" Ena asked the normal thing in this situation as unaware to Fishy, crocodiles didn't exist in this world.

"Nevermind… So, let's hear your story then."

"Are you sure? It's not an easy listen."

"Try me, I've been surprised countless times already, this time I'm prepared."

"Well, if you say so…"

Ena explained to Fishy the story of her life, the life of an elf, one who was born into slavery.

"There are a lot of ways things can go. You can be sold at an auction and forced to live your life by some awful royal who will hit you, beat you, rape you. They would use you like a toy and throw you away once you break. Or, you can end up like me, born from those who are forced to reproduce and slaughtered once they can't anymore."

"You were reproduced to be sold?" Fishy asked,

"Yes, we were on our way to be sold. Me and my many siblings, all from different fathers, all strangers to me. But, none of them would make it, none of us would. We would travel a lot, be forced to fight the monsters we encountered along the way, we would have to care for our own wounds. We would be meat shields, thrown in front whilst the scum watch and laugh at us screaming for our lives."

"That explains how you can fight."

"I was lucky, I realised my magic power quickly, I knew that I'd be able to use it to escape, but I couldn't leave him behind. My only fully biological brother, my twin. My magic allows me to warp to any dagger I've thrown, so long as an hour hasn't passed since I threw it. I thought I'd be able to escape with my brother, I just needed time. I was to escape with him one night, but he got infected. His open wounds weren't healing, all I could think of was trying to escape now, but I couldn't leave him. And then one night, when we stopped to rest, all of us chained to a post next to the roaring campfire, I told him about my power and plan to escape, but he just looked at me like I was insane. He looked at me without saying anything. He turned around to see if anyone else had heard, all of us, with our bruised and abused bodies chained to this pole, but no one was able to even tell you what colour the sky was. My brother was against leaving, but I kept trying to convince him. We continued walking, eventually making our way up a dangerous cliff that we had crossed many times before. The guards at the front were laughing as we were dragged along behind them, we weren't even allowed to sit in the cart they rode on. But that's when I had enough, my brother's condition wasn't improving, and I was the only one able to stay sane. None of us would be sold, we would all die before we made it, and even if we did, no one would buy us. So I tried to escape, I dislocated my wrists, managing to slip my all-ready thin hands through the cuffs. My brother noticed but didn't say anything, I tried to get his handcuffs off but the noise alerted the guards. I tried to fight them off with a rusted blade I grabbed from the back of the cart. I slashed at my brother's chains but they wouldn't break, and the guards were quickly approaching. With the guards pointing their swords at us, and my brother breaking down from his illness, I had one shot. I took my dagger and threw it off the side of the cliff, grabbing into my brother as the guard's sword pierced his shoulder. But, before I could warp us away, I fell off the edge of the cliff. I tried to stretch my hand out as my brother peered over the edge, but it didn't seem right, as my face started getting covered in blood, and his head grew closer to me. I ended up at the bottom of the cliff, with broken bones, the rusted dagger, and my brother's head, which was quickly joined by all the other's. All because I tried to escape. And then a few days later, after walking through the screams, I ended up here."

Fishy didn't say anything. He listened closely to the story and was careful with his words. But, just from looking at Ena, he could tell that she carried the weight of having killed her family.

"I can't speak for them all, but I think I can speak for your brother. I have a sister, who I would do anything for, and if I was in that situation, I would do what your brother did, I would have pushed you off the cliff as well. I would have wanted you to live more than anything."

"What are you saying!" Ena launched up, knocking over the food in front of her as she tried to laugh at Fishy's insane words. "There's no way he pushed me off the cliff."

Fishy just stayed quiet, a face with great sympathy for what Ena had gone through.

And, her inane laughter quickly turned to tears, as she collapsed down onto her knees, screaming in pain, letting out the last tears she didn't think she had.
