Chapter 3 - Chapter 2: The Cabin

I awoke to the cawing of crows from the trees outside the metal shack... wait, a shack? "When did I get here?" I asked myself. I couldn't remember walking here, though I could faintly recognize the slight image of our wrecked car through the hazy night sky. I then realized the major injuries we had sustained from the crash were gone. No bruises, no scratches, no scars, nothing. I turned from the window and started analyzing the room. The room was made completely of oak logs, apart from the dark oak door in the far corner. The room had no furniture other than 2 Queen sized beds and a bearskin rug. There was a single mirror mounted on a wall, seeming completely out of place. The frame of the mirror was styled in an ornate pattern, with silver on one side and gold on the other. As I studied the mirror I saw a shadow flicker across the surface, creating a screech not unlike the sound of nails on a chalkboard. I turned away from the mirror and tightly shut my eyes. Five minutes later, the sound stops. I gasp for breath, unaware that I was holding it in the first place. That's when I realized something. The room had changed! Somehow the mirror was on the other side of the room on its side and shattered to pieces. Aidan and Mackenzie hadn't been woken up by the sound though. "Wait," I thought, " I haven't checked their pulses yet!" I ran over to them and pressed my fingers to their necks. *Ba-bump...Ba-bump* They both wake up at the same time, apparently as confused about our location as I was. "Where are we?" asked Mackenzie. Aidan couldn't seem to talk without intense slurs, rendering his language non-understandable. "I'm as confused as you," I told them,"but I can see the crash from the window." "What crash?" she asked. That's right, they were both asleep when it happened! After about ten minutes of explaining to them what happened, a buzz saw started humming in the yard. The sun had now risen, revealing lumber workers in the yard. "Finally!" I said, "Rescue!" I ran outside waving my arms, screaming at them to help us, but the closer I got to them I realized that every step forward was making my body heavier. They didn't react to seeing or hearing me, it's like I wasn't there. I ended up having to go back inside because of the intensity of gravity the closer I got to them. "So," I say to Mackenzie and Aidan, "Here's the current plan. We should explore the rest of the house for exit points." "But what do we do about him?" asked Mackenzie, pointing at Aidan, who was still struggling to form words. "We can't help him until we get out of here!" "That's fair." she said. So I walked over to the door and laid my hand on the knob. The doorknob was ice cold. It couldn't be this cold, we were on summer vacation, not winter break! I opened the door only to be greeted by a walk in freezer filled with meat hooks and frozen chunks of meat. The open door sent a foul smelling odor into the room, nearly causing us to pass out. After catching our bearings, we sped through the freezer until we arrived at a door. We opened the door to reveal a very odd kitchen. The kitchen looked and smelled like a granny's armpit. The only clean thing in there were the dishes, and thankfully we still had running water. Looking through the cupboards and pantry we found enough food to last us years. "Next room?" I asked. They nodded. We opened the door to reveal a rundown staircase leading upwards into a dark room with no visible light switch, though there did seem to be a lamp. I clicked the lamp on. This seemed to be the living room. It was furnished with a torn up, burgundy, leather couch that stretched across half the room, a radio from the 60's, and an old table with screws missing. Other than that the room was empty, though it had three doors leading to different rooms. The door on the left led to a bathroom that wasn't that dirty, but it wasn't nice either. The walls were all peeling and the bathtub was stained, but other than that it wasn't that bad. The door by the couch led to what might've been the master bedroom, for it had a very large bed with blackout curtains and beautiful sheets designed with trees. The room to the right was a normal bedroom, containing only a twin size bed and a few toys, leading us to believe it was the children's room. Having explored the whole house we returned down to the kitchen, where I started to start the stove to make breakfast. I was fixing the eggs when I heard choking from behind me. I turned to see Aidan fall to the ground, blood seeping from his mouth, Mackenzie backed up against the wall, her face panic stricken. Aidan began to spasm on the ground, crying out in agony. His eyes began to roll into the back of his head, his face contorting into a sickening grin. Then the spasms stopped, his grin becoming a comedic frown, like the ones in those clown paintings. He began whispering under his breath, blood gurgling as he spoke. *whisper* *gulp* *whisper* I leaned closer to hear him better, my face inches from his. Suddenly he screamed again, vomiting blood into my face. The smell of blood made me dizzy, and I put my hand on his chest for support, then my blood went cold. His heart wasn't beating. Still he screamed, "DON'T SLEEP! DON'T SPEAK! DON'T BREATHE! DON'T SLEEP! DON'T SPEAK! DON'T BREATHE!" Then the lights went out.
