Chereads / The Ambitious Wish: The Contract Fiancée / Chapter 6 - Her Heart Will Never Change

Chapter 6 - Her Heart Will Never Change

Jian Qingshan was just about to clinch the deal with the man when they were interrupted by an inconveniently timed knock at the door.

The man immediately looks up.

"Li Bai? Come in."

"Pardon me, sir."

Dressed in a well-made suit, a gentleman a few years older than Wang Zhixin walks into the room.

"I just said goodbye to Mr. Xiu. Is it true? The engagement is off?"

This man was Li Bai, one of Wang Zhixin's executives here. He had joined the company a few years ago. Many said he was the CEO's right-hand man.

Although the woman was disheartened to have been interrupted at such a critical moment, she immediately recognizes the man.

Li Bai was subtly shaming the man for calling off the engagement. Which means the CEO made the decision on him own?

Honestly, the board of directors and the CEO himself probably have a different opinion when it comes to marriage.

She decides to sit back and see where the conversation goes, as the information may be useful.

"Xiu Market Corporation is one of the top ten cloud databanks in world. Forming an alliance with them would mean we have the most powerful cloud. That would make it possible for you to create an even more revolutionary product."

"You're right. And it's important to remain revolutionary. And as well-reasoned and optimistic as you and your way of thinking about these issues are. You don't understand anything."

"You're dodging the issue, President. Let's meet with other party and talk this over again. WGTC may be at the top now, but a deal with Xiu Market would be the foundation for a new first step."

"Are you familiar with Article 24 of the Chinese Constitution?"

"I'm sorry, what?"

"It states that a marriage can only occur if both parties are willing and that both spouses have equal rights. A marriage must be maintained through the continuous efforts of both parties. To put it bluntly, a marriage is something to be entered into freely. And I have no intention of marrying a corporation."

A sardonic smile spreads across the man's face. Li Bai was about to start arguing with the man, but he beats him to it.

"It's all over. There's no use in rehashing the past. I have my own ideas."

"But—"

"Personal feelings aside, the appeal of joining with Xiu Market is fading. Also, you don't seem to have noticed, but we're currently in the presence of a guest."

Wang Zhixin, who refuses to be spoken over, his voice booms, authoritative and absolute.

Li Bai doesn't even try to hide his suspicion as he glares at her. And, in a matter of second, she flashes him a warm smile, the man, Li Bai daunted leaves the room.

"That was unnecessary."

"I'm terribly sorry, but I'm only human, so when people gives me hostile looks, I can't help but want to respond appropriately."

"Talk about feisty."

"I am who I am."

Her reply brought a faint smile on the man's lips.

"It's Wu Nianzhen, right? You mentioned you're able to consult on non-business-related matters as well."

The moment he spoken, every cell on her body involuntarily lights up.

"Yes. I work at the pleasure of my clients. I can consult on any matter they like. At its heart, my job is to find solutions to client problems. You don't need to decide now. Get in touch with me anytime."

"Wait. I've made my decision. I'll hire you."

His blunt response quickly does away with all uncertainly. A deep relief immediately warms her to the core.

"I'd like to ask you to do some work pertaining to my personal life. Select a fiancée for me."

"A fiancée?"

"Yes and make it a fake one."

"In other words, you want me to find you a woman who can pretend to be your fiancée?"

The man responds affirmatively. Not with words, but with his eyes.

"Understood. Could you tell me your minimum requirements?"

"She must be someone I can use."

"I see. Since you were engaged to CEO Xiu's daughter, would it be fair to say the woman's background is important?"

"Yes, but she can't be stupid. And, if she's someone with a background to speak of, the people around her can't be fools either."

"I think I have a fairly good idea of what you want. A woman with backing."

"Yes, that would be ideal. That's what my board of directors seems to want so badly. The more people I have in my life, the more idiots I have making my life difficult."

As the man falls silent, she looks at him working through her own thoughts. It had reminded her of the conversation he had with Li Bai.

Any woman the board of directors wanted him to approach about a business-motivated engagement would obviously be backed by incredibly powerful people. But this man was more interested in expanding his own business than he is forming an alliance.

Considering his personality, he'd be willing to marry someone who would give him an advantage, but he's yet to find someone that appealing. He is, after all, the CEO of WGTC, one of the most powerful companies in the world.

Most importantly, when it comes down to it, the man doesn't trust people. He's not interested in small payoffs. Yet, his board of directors is proposing he gets married just for the modest benefits it would provide. So, it makes sense that he decided to opt for a fake engagement when he's fed up.

"Let me go over your conditions once more. The woman must be clever and have a solid background, but her supporters can't be too pushy. And, she must be able to understand that your arrangement is nothing more than a fake engagement, is that correct?"

"Can you handle that?"

"It's part of my job as a consultant to provide solutions to any issues troubling my clients. I'll put the trouble brewing amongst your subordinates to rest as quickly as possible, so you can focus on the continued success of your company."

Jian Qingshan holds out her hand, and the man stares at it. A moment later, he quietly laughs.

"What an odd alliance this is. I look forward to working with you."

"You can count on me."

His firm handshake sets off sparks deep in her chest. Knowing the man, failure will not be tolerated.

He will throw you out the second he thinks you're no longer of use to him. To the woman, if she ever wants to get her hands-on Code X, her real goal, she's got to succeed.

-

"Ok, so that's what I've got." Placing the list on her dresser at home, she massages her tense shoulders.

All of sudden, I'm interrupted by a critical voice.

"Hey, don't move! This is the most important part!"

"Sorry."

"What a list! You're going to find him one hell of a beauty."

"Ha-ha, even more beautiful than you, Guan Yu."

"Oh no, of course not. It's a hundred years too early for those girls to even try to come for me."

Still fixing her hair, Guan Yu, an FBI agent working as a stylist, flashes her a confident smile. A beautiful young man, his good looks are only surpassed by his affinity for sass.

Guan Yu is singlehandedly responsible for the task of disguising agents for their various missions.

"So, anyone you think you can use?" The man asks, pointing at the list.

The list was actually created by her agency. They women on it are all FBI agents.

"Hmm… any of them would work but—"

"You can't choose? A normal man would be thrilled with any of these girls."

"Normal being the operative word."

"Some people want it all. Beauty and brains alone aren't enough to satisfy him"

For a man like Wang Zhixin, he needs someone adaptable, someone who can think fast on the fly as the situation demands. Someone who can't develop real feelings for him. The woman needs to be able to differentiate between her act and real life.

In order to match him with a compatible woman, Jian Qingshan spent the last few days looking into the details of Wang Zhixin's past and personal history.

His personality and tastes are deeply tied to his career.

Unfortunately, just as the boss mentioned. His past was erased.

"For someone as rich as he is. It must seem like the women who approach him are only interested in his money."

"Yes, but that's a good way for him to separate the wheat from the chaff. He specifically said he needed an intellectual woman capable of handling situation like a professional."

"Yeah, that's true, but isn't that a little sad?"

"…"

"Guan Yu?"

"You're great at your job, but I swear, sometimes—"

"Sometimes, what?"

"Sometimes—oh my god! What is with that nail?"

"Oh, that? The gel is coming off a little on my pinky."

"You should have told me sooner! Ugh, I guess I'll handle that after your hair."

"Ok."

What Guan Yu really wanted to say was probably—something Jian Qingshan won't realize for some time.

This whole thing is about making sure justice is served. And that has always been on her guiding principle to her career.

She knows that at that moment, her heart will never change.
